What is Studbook Keeper News?

• First step towards the community-developed ZIMS vision of integrated, far-more efficient and timely studbook data

• Previously Studbook Keepers had to rely on institutions responding to periodic questionnaires to provide updated data on their species of interest

• Studbook Keeper News allows studbook keepers to easily see the current, or historical, events for their species as entered by institutions into their own animal records on ZIMS.

Why Does it Matter?

Historical Data

• More institutions are joining ISIS and incorporating their data, some which may be quite old, into the ISIS database

• Institutions– Need to give their staff members who are

Studbook Keepers access to ZIMS by making them a ZIMS Users and providing login status

• Regional Associations –– Need to provide ISIS with an updated list• Studbook Keeper name• Studbook Keeper’s institution• Species covered by the studbook

Regional Association Studbook Keeper Setup – the winner

• Regional Association logs into ZIMS and adds existing ZIMS Users as your regional studbook keepers– ISIS can provide training to do this– ISIS will work with institutions to get their studbook

keepers appropriate ZIMS access– Studbook Keepers cannot be added until they have ZIMS

access at their facilities

Page 8: Studbook Keeper News!

Regional Association Studbook Keeper Setup – second place

• Regional Association sends ISIS an Excel, or similar file, of their studbook keepers and ISIS will set them up for ISIS member institutions– Studbook Keeper name– Studbook Keeper’s institution– Species covered

Page 9: Studbook Keeper News!

Regional Association Studbook Keeper Setup – third best

• Regional Association does not contact ISIS with the information– ISIS will fill in the information with the best data we

currently have available to us– Difficult and costly for ISIS to track studbooks assigned

by each Regional Association • Currently 20 Regional Associations with studbooks• AZA has ~700 managed studbooks
