From the editorWelcome to the September issue of Local Reach. I hope that you made the most of the occasional glimpse of sunny weather in between the showers – at least watering the garden has not been too much of a problem this year!

September is a busy month in the area. The excitement of Tor Fair will reach Glastonbury this month and there are various harvest festivals taking place across the area.

This issue of Local Reach includes the regular walks by the Mendip Ramblers, lots of events at the Assembly Rooms in Glastonbury and details of clubs which are restarting after their summer break. Martin Mudie offers his usual gardening hints and tips plus there are a number of worthwhile volunteering opportunities available.

The Local Reach website is flourishing and includes all of the news, information and events from the area. One section on the website is dedicated to your comments, so please visit and tell us what you think about Local Reach. Maybe you have attended one of the groups or events as a result of reading an article in the magazine or have used one of the businesses as a result of seeing their Local Reach advert – if so, please let us know.

If you are a local club or charity, don’t forget to send me your regular news so I can give you some free editorial in future issues – LocalReach is the ideal way to promote your organisation/events to all residents in Street, Glastonbury, Walton and surrounding villages.

LocalReach also offers competitive rates for local businesses who wish to advertise in the magazine – please get in touch if you would like to advertise your business in the October issue. I look forward to hearing from you

The Editor. The deadline for the October issue is 14th September!

in Somerset Rural Youth Project’s Pop-Up Kindness Day gave out fruit smoothies and cupcakes to passers by in Bridgwater town centre.

A group of around ten teenagers aged 15 to 17 took part in the day, which involved offering shoppers a massage or the chance to have their nails painted.

The event formed part of the National Citizen Service programme, which aims to give young people opportunities and experiences over the summer.

Sports Vision and Sunspectacles By Adrian Springett

100 High St, Street. BA16 0EW

Local stockists of SUNWISE sports spectacles

Vision performs a fundamental role in sport and leisure activities. If our vision is not completely corrected with driving, cycling, running , skiing and many other sporting or leisure activities, our visual and physical performance may be compromised. Outside of a competitive environment it is still vital to have good vision and eye protection so the activities undertaken can be enjoyed safely.

Vision is of critical importance in outdoor environments. Here, there may be extreme light conditions and a lot of glare. This will reduce clarity and comfort of vision. Therefore, selecting the best performing solar lenses will have an impact on the eyes and therefore the outcome of the sport or leisure activity.

The sunglasses most suited to extreme conditions and sport activities are wrap around or highly curved frames. These frames are more ergonomic, adjust better to the human face and provide more comfort to the wearer. They give protection from side and back light and give physical protection from windy and dusty climates.

Unfortunately, if standard lenses are glazed

into a wrap frame, the optical properties of the lenses are compromised. Bending a standard lens to fit a highly curved frame produces peripheral blur and loss of clarity. This will result in the narrowing of the wearer’s useful visual field. This can happen even with Plano lenses in wrap around frames.

SHAMIR are a lens company who have designed special lenses called “Attitude” which aim to compensate for the wrap of a sports frame. They are available in both single vision and varifocal formats. Special “Eye point technology” and digital lens surfacing techniques means that lenses can be tailor made for the client, their prescription and the frame chosen. These lenses therefore provide clearer vision with wider fields of view, ideal for sporting activities and wrap frames.

Shamir have now combined with SUNWISE to produce a range of fashionable prescription sports sun spectacles.

SUNWISE prescription spectacles have just been launched in the market place and are available from selective optical practices throughout the country.

Musings from my GardenBy Martin Mudie

Today I want to write about pot culture – no not that sort of pot – shame on you! – I mean growing plants in containers. This has become very popular of late, judging by all the wonderful shapes and sizes available.

However, for me it took a trip to New England a few years ago which I made with the Lovely Muriel to open my eyes to its full potential. You see they have such hard winters there that mostly all you can get are trees, hardy shrubs and annuals and it took a visit to a lovely GC high in the Aderondacks to understand. It

was a lovely autumn day and all you could see in pots were Chrysanthemums in all their golden hues.

Now this set me thinking. Up until then I had just used my pots in the summer. Now if you divide the year into the four seasons, it is now possible to have colour from fl ower and foliage all year round. So when the display is getting tired just pop over to the garden centre and indulge yourself, both in the café and the plant area. The autumn – spring is even easier as to care for as they rarely need water and never feeding. Just think of the back ache you save!

Now we are coming up to autumn here are a few ideas apart from ‘mums’

Dahlias – Helianthus – Rudbeckias – Salvias – the choice is yours.

Virtually anything in fl ower now will last till the frosts and come November you can start all over again. If you are frugal you can then plant the perennials in the garden for next year.

Topical TipsKeep up with the dead –heading it will keep your plant fl owering longer and will look tidier.

Many choose to buy bulbs now but if you wait to December they are often reduced. Plant them then and they will fl ower just a little later.

Happy Gardening

For peace of mind, see a solicitorwrites David Sinclair.Politicians, bankers and journalists have all taken a knock in recent times.

A survey commissioned by the Bar Standards Board showed solicitors to be the most trusted professionals with 17 per cent saying they trusted them.

As you'd expect, politicians and estate agents were the least trusted, with bankers only slightly higher.

When it comes to writing your Will, you need the trusted skill of a legal expert. A Will is an extremely important document and you can't take a gamble by using amateur Will writers or by doing it yourself.

Solicitors like myself are highly trained, insured and regulated by the solicitor governing body.

But Will writers are untrained, non-insured and totally unregulated.

Acorn Solicitors can help you get your Will written with legal expertise and regulation, bringing you peace of mind.

We are a local, friendly, family firm based in Street and Taunton, and specialising in Wills, Probate and Property Law.

As we are on the High Street, we are easy to pop in to see and talk to our friendly legal experts. You can also find us on Facebook and Twitter.

A rising trampoline star from Charlton Mackrell in Somerset is celebrating after achieving a great result in the national trampoline competition in Birmingham recently.

After qualifying to get to the fi nals, Charlotte Male competed with 17 of the best under 19s ladies in the country. She achieved an excellent sixth place by performing a complex routine which included six double somersaults.

Charlotte is no stranger to success as she was also a member of the South West Colleges team that won the British Colleges Sport competition in April this year.

Jenny Stevens, Griffi n and Strode Academy Trampoline Coach said: “Charlotte performed

superbly at the nationals. She competed with her toughest routines to date and achieved an amazing result; we are very proud of her. She has undoubtedly benefi tted from the extra training she has managed to fi t in this year by being part of Strode’s trampoline academy.”

"Now that summer is here, gardening does not get an easier and raised beds can make work much easier and they are an easy project for you to attempt.

All you need is some treated decking, a length of 3" x 3" treated fence post, some decking screws and end timber preservative. You can make the beds any size you want but 5' long by 2' wide is a good size but try to ensure that you can cut the lengths so that there is no wasted decking. Cut the 4 corner posts to the height of your bed - 4 side planks gives you about 2' height. Drill and screw the planks to the corner posts log cabin style with the corners alternating as shown. Remember to treat all ends of the cut timber to protect them. The beds look better if you have the grooved sides of the decking on the outside.

Finish off with a top plank, smooth side downwards, mitred at the corners and screwed down to the corner posts. Put broken bricks or crooks in the bottom for drainage after you have placed the bed anywhere you want in the garden - put spacers under the corners if

required to level the box. Fill with soil and mix some compost into the top layers to give your plants a good start."

The local branch of the RSPCA, Southeast Somerset is proud that it helps many animals with “not a lot a cash” but devoted workers, both Trustees and other volunteers who seem to perform miracles, but could do more with your help

They have a fantastic cattery on the outskirts of Yeovil run by volunteers and we work with St Giles kennels near Taunton to rehome both our cats and our dogs. www.stgileskennels.co.uk

If you live in Street or Somerton the group are always looking for more helpers to handle the generous donations that come to the shops. They need volunteers to help

raise funds in both tried and innovative ways, e.g. there will be a Fashion Show in Street in November. Have you any ideas you could try with us?

Of course the back stage work is not glamorous, taking the minutes from meetings or helping with the invoices, but it might be right up your street

How about giving talks to others about our work, Did you know the RSPCA is currently running campaigns to Stop the Export of live Animals, get some stricter laws relating to dangerous Dogs and indiscriminate breeding of Pets, better care for rabbit and a campaign against the proposed cull of badgers here

in the Southwest. We need help to succeed with these

The RSPCA could do so much more locally helping owners and their animals who are in fi nancial diffi culties if they had more supporters to share this rewarding work - and they don't even call it that because it brings new friends and interests!

The musical show “Summer Holiday” is being staged by the “The Young Musical Theatre Company (TYMTC)” at Strode Theatre on August 30th, 31st and September 1st. Young Musical Theatre is a new company that has been set up to provide opportunities for young people – aged 13 to 25 – to get involved in live theatre; “Summer Holiday” is the group’s very fi rst production and is also being staged in support of the Strode Theatre.

“Summer Holiday” is the hit show about four young bus mechanics and their hilarious exploits as they take a London double-decker bus on a holiday-of-a-lifetime journey around Europe – picking up three lovely ladies in France and an unlikely stow-away on the way! Like the fi lm, the stage show is fi lled with the same memorable Cliff Richard hits which will be played live on stage; a taste of great British nostalgia from a talented company of young performers!

A last minute solution has been found to prevent a local Scrapstore

service from folding. LocalReach previously reported that following the end of local authority funding, GEMS Scrapstore and Play Resource Centre based in Wells would be closing down in mid August.

Prior to the announcement, Scrapstore Manager Laura Kavanagh had been in discussion with the Revd. Diana Greenfi eld to explore whether the Scrapstore could be set up and run as a new charity venture based at the Red Brick Building in Glastonbury. However, with little time to spare on waiting for an outcome, the

decision to close the Scrapstore had to be made.

But following renewed talks and negotiation, an agreement has been reached to move the Scrapstore operations to Glastonbury, with new independent charity being established by the Revd Greenfi eld to run the Scrapstore and help raise funds for the Red Brick Building.

Manager Laura Kavanagh said: ‘This news is absolutely brilliant and I am thrilled to see the service transfer to be based at the Red Brick Building. It is a fantastic location with the café and plenty of parking. The Revd Greenfi eld and her team are in a great position to make a real success of running a Scrapstore. Having to initiate the closing down procedure was pretty heart breaking, not

least because of the potential this service has to thrive, with the right team and structure. Those who will be involved in running the new Scrapstore will be in a really strong position to take the work forward and I am delighted that it will continue; it is the most fantastic outcome for the community. ‘

It is expected that the new Scrapstore will open in the New Year when works to the building have been completed.

‘The Red Brick Building is going to become a great focal point for art based activities, education and community projects’ said Laura ‘and a Scrapstore based there will be key to so much of that work. It is destined to fl ourish’.

Recently the Mendip

Mallards swimming team travelled to Plymouth to

take part in the Plymouth Pisces annual swimming gala.

The new pool and facilities at Plymouth are excellent with a real emphasis on catering for the less mobile swimmers. Of particular note is special chair hoist which operates from inside the pool – a very welcome feature.

As usual the competition was intense coupled with an

air of friendly rivalry which has prevailed ever since the South West galas began some 20 years ago.

On this occasion it was the Mallards who came away with the Senior Shield, closely followed by Plymouth Pisces, Yeovil Apollo and Keynsham Seals.

The photograph shows all of the Mallards medal winners with Marcia Richards from Street (seated) holding the ‘Endeavour’ shield which she was awarded for showing special effort and determination during her races.

The Mallards swim every Sunday at Strode Pool, Street from 12:30pm to 1:30pm in a ‘sheltered swim’ and new members and their families are always welcome

Please ring Norman on 01963 240439 for further details.

Mendip Ramblers September 2012 WalksTimes, distances, meeting places and contact details for walks this month organised by the Mendip Ramblers are detailed below:

One of the biggest challenges for those living in Walton, Ashcott, Street and Glastonbury is to drive down the levels of waste they produce.

With landfi ll costing Somerset council tax payers around £10 million a year, reducing waste would save materials and money, and cut our impact on climate from greenhouse gases.

So it is great news that there has been a 4% fall in the annual average amount of Somerset’s “household waste arisings”, to below a tonne for the fi rst time since probably the 1980s.

A factor is likely to be the recession, encouraging new thrifty habits that could mean we buy less, and sell or pass on items rather than throw them away.

Of course, an average 990kgs arisings per household means that some people are below that fi gure and plenty of others have more to do to lose weight. If this is you, is it time to declare yourself a WasteWatcher?

It is important to maintain and improve our good habits, fi nd new ways to make our refuse bins ever lighter, and reduce our need to recycle.

On a practical level, that would mean taking care to only buy what you need such as food, avoiding disposable goods, such as carrier bags, razors, paper plates or tissues, and investing in products that last

and retain their value for reuse.

For waste prevention options, a good example is moving home, which can include passing on furniture you no longer need for reuse, buying second-hand items, investing in durable appliances, stopping and forwarding post.

Practical action will be under discussion later this month, when groups from across Somerset will gather to share experiences and consider how to encourage the essential behaviour change that ensures less waste.

Invitations to the conference on Saturday 29 September have been going out to a range of green groups, youth clubs, parish councils, housing associations, companies, charities and more. Any organisation from Glastonbury, Street, Ashcott or Walton keen to attend should contact [email protected].

PS: That is also where to send your best WasteWatcher tips – all ideas welcome.

Can we help?

Help at Home can help you get the most out of life, whether you need temporary or longer term support.

What is pain? Health professionals use different terms for different types of pain. • Short-term pain is called Acute

Pain.eg. a sprained ankle. • Long-term is called Persistent

or Chronic Pain - back trouble or arthritis are examples.

• Pain that comes and goes is called Recurrent or Intermittent

Pain - toothache could be one. Many acute pains are like an alarm telling us something is wrong. Most minor ones are easy to treat.

Persistent pain often serves no useful purpose. The messages from the warning system linked to long-term conditions like arthritis or back pain are not

needed - just annoying. Over time, it may affect what we can do, our ability to work or sleep. It can have a strong negative effect on our family and friends too.

Our aim is to help people improve their painful symptoms and coping abilities, naturally.Contact us on: 01458 860425

Somerset Rural Youth Project has featured in a national newspaper in a report about the impact of the recession on young people. The story in the Independent on Sunday highlighted the diffi culties for young people living in the countryside who are hit harder by fuel costs, transport cuts, bad career advice and few training options.

Triston Watkins, of Burtle, who is involved in the charity’s Moped Loan Scheme, was

featured in the national paper. He said: “I live 10 miles from Bridgwater College down on the Somerset Levels. It’s a pretty isolated village. Transport is an issue. There is not much really to do there. I haven’t seen a bus in three years. Those we have are for schools.

“When lived in Baltonsborough, I had to cycle to Glastonbury along the canal path about seven miles most mornings. You end up tired before the day has started. I

got a moped at 16. Once you have got a mode of transport it’s alright, but if you haven’t you are pretty stuck. My dad is working abroad and we liek to chat every day on Skype, but somethimes we can’t do it because the internet is so slow. There is no signal for mobiles where we are. It does create problems.”
