    Structure & Daily Routines

    Before any strategies and activities are put in place,it is crucial that ELL students are able to havestructure and routine in their daily activities.

    Bell BuddyThis is very helpful for new ELL students. They arepaired with a partner and are able to shadow him/her during daily routines.

    This strategy helps them get to know someone new,and prevents them from being lost during their firstdays in a new place.

    Vocabulary Strategies

    Picture Glossary: Students can either make pictorialflash cards or create an actual journal full of pictures

    Word Wall: The teacher posts new or commonlyused words in an organized manner.

    Visual Aids/Media: The teacher provides props,videos, songs, and other technological toolsavailable to aid ELL learners.

    Science Bingo: This doesnt involve much speakingon behalf of ELL learners, but allows them to followalong and review science vocabulary.

    Vocabulary StrategiesContd

    Classifying and Word Sorts: These activities entailstudents grouping words based on criteriadetermined by the students. There are typicallymany correct ways to sort a single list of words, andas long as students can explain their criteria and howeach word fits into a particular group, this type ofdivergent thinking should be encouraged.

    Sentence Stems: Sentence stems, such as Ithink or Today I learned, support students asthey write expository text and use content-areavocabulary from the word wall or word chart

    Hands on Activities

    Providing Labs This allows ELLsto physically learn what is being taughtto them

    Group Projects/Cooperative Learning:This allows students to work with their peers, create aconcept, and present it to other groups.

    Think Pair Share:This strategy doesnt put timid readers on the spot.Instead they get to discuss a concept with a partner.Readers Theatre:

    This strategy allows students to express their creativity ina different way, while demonstrating their knowledge ofa concept.

    Lessons

    Compare and Contrast: students find similarities anddifferences between the pieces of writing they didfor homework and then compare with the class

    Role Playing: Students can have an alternateidentity doing this. In being someone else studentmay be more comfortable asking questions they maynot normally ask, or do things they may not normallydo.

    Finish the Sentence: A simple activity which at firstsight looks like a grammar-type exercise. However,the students must complete each unfinished phrasetruthfully.
