WORKSHOP INTRODUCTIONDo you know where your organisation is going and how you plan to get there? Do you know why you are doing what you do? Are you a tactical thinker or strategic thinker?

It is through strategic management; Strategic Thinking and Planning - that organisations attempt to reach their goals and out-think the competition. Thinking strategically requires research, analysis, and a certain mind-set to create a plan for how you will proceed as an organisation. A recent study conducted by the Wall Street Journal of corporate human resources and leadership development executives identified the top 5 executive skills sought by organisations:

1. Strategic thinking 2. Ability to work across functions 3. Ability to drive results 4. General leadership 5. Core financial understanding

Other recent research underlines the importance of strategic thinking at the organisational level. 750 bankrupt companies with at least $500 million in assets in the last quarter before bankrupt were studied. Analysis revealed that the number one cause of bankruptcy in nearly 50% of the cases was bad strategy. In most instances, the avoidable situations resulted from poor initial strategies and not incompetent execution.

The ability to think strategically is both critical and essential for leaders and managers at many organisational levels and specific experiences and world-views can contribute to the development of an individual’s strategic thinking ability. Culture, among other organisational factors, can either encourage or limit those contributions. Leaders, as builders of culture, and with transformational mind-sets, can help create the ideal culture for learning to think strategically. If the leaders at the various levels of your organisation can’t think strategically today, you may not have a business tomorrow. Learn these essential skills so that you can continue to grow your business and your career.

Learning Outcomes

As part of our Leadership Development Program, our aim is to provide you with tools and guidance to enhance your abilities to think strategically and improve your strategic planning process; building on the skills you already have, and continue to develop, as leaders across the organisation. By the end of the workshop you will be able to:

• Understand and begin to expand your own thinking styles• Understand the value of leveraging other styles• Be exposed to competitive analysis as a means to identify opportunities• Understand the role of creative thinking in building and evaluating a strategy • Examine ways to communicate strategy that will earn support and commitment from all stakeholders• Experience and practice a methodology for clarifying and managing dilemmas inherent in strategic

management• Be exposed to a framework to develop their own strategic approach as well as to engage other

stakeholders, key resources and their team in a strategic view of their business and/or division

WORKSHOP OVERVIEW AND OBJECTIVESDuring this experiential workshop participants will learn and practice the skills of Strategic thinking and Planning. The main objective is to provide participants with the essential underpinning knowledge and to enhance their understanding and use of tools and models for thinking strategically. Operations management asks the question: Are we doing things right? Strategic management asks the question: Are we doing the right things? So, if we look at thinking strategically from this point of view, we must start by asking ourselves if we are doing the right things in our team, in our division, in our department, and then in our organisation as a whole. Participants will also learn how to move people with vision of the future and inspiration. They will learn how leaders must think continuously in a strategic way to win an increasingly complex business world

components of strategic thinking (scanning, questioning, conceptualising, and testing)• The importance of learning the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities that fall into four major

categories:1. A knowledge of strategic thinking2. Skill in organisational diagnosis related to strategic thinking3. The ability to critically self-reflect on one’s own strategic thinking behaviours4. Skill in planning and implementing self and organisational change to enhance strategic thinking
