    Scene 1 Shot 1

Still shot of Supermanwith Superman themesong playing in thebackground.

Narrator: Is Superman really faster than a

speeding bullet? We are about to find

    out.

    Scene 2 Shot 1

Diagonal split screen. Loisappears first. ThenSuperman appears torespond to Lois call forhelp.

Lois: Help me Superman! There is a large asteroid

headed right for me and I need you to

    get me out of here!

Superman: Lois is in trouble, but shes 50 miles

    away!

    Scene 2 Shot 1

A standing Superman, getting ready to fly out, looks at a wind cloud thatis blowing air out.

Superman: I must hurry to rescue Lois, but I must

consider the direction of the wind.

With the wind blowing against me it

will take me 12 minutes to get there.

On my return, it will take me 10

minutes since I will be flying with the

    wind.

    Scene 2 Shot 2

Superman is animated, showing him flying acrossthe screen.

Narrator: Superman destroyed the asteroid and

    then flew directly back home.

    Scene 3 Shot 1:

The question, How canwe find Supermansspeed? slides in from theleft. The distance formulaappears as the narrator

    states it.

Narrator: This question can be answered by

    using the distance formula, where

distance equals rate times the time.

    Scene 4 Shot 1:

A 3 by 4 table will fade in on the screen.

The text will appear once it is mentioned inthe narration.

NARRATOR: Lets set up a table to

organize our information. We will list the

    information given when Superman was

flying with the wind and against the wind.

Now lets add in the other variables. We

have Supermans rate, his time and his

    distance.

    Scene 4 Shot 2

The text inside the table will appear once it

    is mentioned in the narration.

NARRATOR: Lets start by filling in the

values we know. It took Superman 12minutes, or one-fifth of an hour, to get

there and 10 minutes, or one-sixth of an

hour, to get back home. (pause) We also

know that Superman traveled 50 milesthere and 50 miles back. Now for the

tricky part. The trip there and back was

    influenced by the wind. Therefore,

Supermans rate flying against the windslowed him down. So, for that rate we will

put s minus w, where s stands for

Supermans speed and w stands for thespeed of the wind. Likewise, whenSuperman flies with the wind he flies

faster. So, for his rate with the wind we

    will put s plus w.

    Scene 4 Shot 3:

The table and the words will fade outleaving just the algebraic values.

NARRATOR: If we get rid of the table and

the titles, we are left with a system of

equations with two variables: s, the speed

of Superman and w, the speed of the wind.

    Scene 4 Shot 4

The 6s and 5s will appear in a red color. NARRATOR: Lets apply linear

    combination, also known as elimination.

To do this we must use multiplication to

    create two equivalent equations where

either the ss or ws are opposite values of

each other. In this case, lets see what

happens when we multiply the top equation

by 6 and the bottom equation by 5.

Scene 4 Shot 5:The equations will fade in. The bar willslide in from the left. The bottom

equation will appear once the narrator

    says, add our equations together.

NARRATOR: In our new set of equations

we have opposite ws. We can add our

equations together and cancel out the ws.

    Scene 4 Shot 6

The top equation will appear on the screen.

As the narrator says, by dividing bothside the fraction bars and the 2s on the

    bottom will appear.

    NARRATOR: Lets solve our new

equation for s by dividing both sides by 2.

    We have just discovered Supermans

    speed: 225 miles per hour.

    Scene 5 Shot 1

The question, How can we find the speed

of the wind? slides in from the left. Theline Supermans speed = 225 appears

when the narrator says speed. The

equations appear once the narrator says

    equations.

NARRATOR: We can answer this question

by plugging Supermans speed into one of

    the equations.

  • 8/9/2019 Storyboard Kohler

    13/14

    Scene 5 Shot 2

The top two equations appear. The thirdequation appears once the narrator says,

substitute. The two -225s will appearonce the narrator says, subtracting. The

bottom line appears once the narrator says, winds speed.

    NARRATOR: If we substitute Supermans

speed into the top equation we get a new

equation. We can now solve for w by

subtracting 225 from both sides. We can

see that the winds speed is 75 miles per

    hour.

    Scene 6 Shot 1

    Supermans figure appears. After

Superman finishes speaking, the 225 mph

appears above his head. Next the wind

cloud appears. Once the wind cloudfinishes speaking, the text 75 mph appears

    above the cloud.

    Supermans theme song plays louder.

    Fade to black.

Superman: I can fly 225 miles per hour.

Cloud: I can blow wind that is 75 miles per

    hour.
