People often ask me how we find all

the fantastic items we feature, both

in our online and print editions. I

answer, usually with a little grin, that

it’s my job, and I love it! The truth is

that I find my inspiration everywhere;

through our local business owners

who work hard to create shops filled

with fantastic goodies, when I surf

the web for great online buys, and

through, what else? Pinterest!

I grew up with a room full of

magazines, the nickname Imelda

Marcos because of my shoe fetish, and

my husband now jokes that I consider

shopping a sport. I’m very fortunate

that I’ve been able to parlay all those

things into a career where I get to

share all my latest obsessions, and

those of our team of writers, with you.

As we move into fall, my favourite

season for fashion, we’ve put together

an issue full of our favourites of the

season. Check out the animal print

flats (see “Five Fall Trends”, page

11). Fall is also a great time to take

a weekend getaway (see “Weekend

Getaway”, page 26), and enjoy a hot

bowl of thick soup (see “Soup’s On!”,

page 22).

The best part of this, our largest issue

yet? One lucky reader and subscriber

will win a huge prize package - one of

each of the items in this edition that

has the Win It! button beside it. For all

the details check out page 30.

Good luck!

Vanilla Clothing is anything but boring or average. Considered the ultimate aphrodisiac by the Spanish, vanilla is the

world’s most popular flavour and scent, and once you walk through the doors of Vanilla Clothing, it will instantly become your favourite place to shop.

As a mother herself, owner Deanna Whissell, understands that women want clothing that suits their lifestyle and their personality. “It’s all about fashion that feels great,” says Deanna. “We bring in quality fashions from designers such as Frank Lyman, Neon Buddha, Pure Handknit, Sympli, and Adam Jacobs. We also feature local designer, Marjolein of Sweetpiece Jewellery. They’re fun fashions that fit into a real woman’s life.”

With two lower mainland locations, one in White Rock and the other in Walnut Grove, Vanilla Clothing is more than just your neighbourhood clothing boutique — they’re an active member of the community. “We want to contribute to our community and support our customers by participating in their kids’ sports teams fundraisers, and charitable events.” Deanna goes on to say, “A community is only as strong as the people who live, work, and shop in it.”

Indeed, Vanilla Clothing has been helping to support shop local initiatives with the introduction of their wildly popular Retail Therapy Boutique & Wine Tours. Offered several times per year, customers enjoy an afternoon full of wine tastings, appetizers, and shopping at a variety of independent boutiques in the Fraser Valley.

Both Vanilla Clothing locations are open Tuesday through Saturday from 10:30am – 5:30pm. Ask about their loyalty program and “Like” their Facebook page at facebook.com/vanilla-clothing for a chance to win a fabulous prize.

handcrafted by local artists and sisters, Robin Murrell and Heidi Clarkson, of RVN Industrial Lighting, the vases

are created using recycled lightbulbs. "Incandescent bulbs will soon be obsolete," says Robin. "We wanted to utilize them in a way that compliments our vintage industrial lighting."

This talented duo have created both a hanging and sitting version. Available in a variety of sizes, the vases look beautiful as a group of three or make a stunning stand-alone statement when filled with coloured water, fresh blooms and river rock.

RVN Industrial Lighting creates unique lighting fixtures that

combine vintage pieces with an industrial edge. Their work is available in several shops including Brick & Mortar Living in New Westminster, Spruce Collective in Abbotsford and Maple Ridge Florist. The Bulb Vases retail for $12.00 – $15.00. RVN Industrial Lighting can be found on Facebook.

Soup’s On!Creamy potato and bacon soup is the ultimate comfort food for Fall.

Recipe & Photo by Linda Horn

taste

Autumn — the season brings to mind afternoon walks in crisp air, crunching through fallen leaves, while bundled into a favourite sweater and comfy boots. What could be more satisfying, than returning to a bowl of bacon and potato comfort?

Rich and creamy, this soup will definitely hit all the comfort zones. Flavourful yellow-fleshed potatoes, crisp and smoky bacon, zesty thyme and rich, creamy broth combine to create the ultimate in comfort food. Scoop up every last drop of soup with a chunk of freshly-baked and hearty beer bread.

Potato & Bacon Soup

Makes 8 servings

Ingredients6 or 7 medium-sized yellow-fleshed

potatoes1 litre good quality chicken stock1 tablespoon bacon fat2 celery stalks, diced 3 shallots, diced fine1 tablespoon fresh thyme leaves,

chopped6 slices cooked, crisp bacon¼ cup plus 2 tablespoons butter2½ tablespoons all-purpose flour500 ml half-and-half creamSalt & pepper to taste

DirectionsCook bacon until crisp. Chop into pieces and set aside. Save 1 tablespoon of bacon fat.

Peel and cut potatoes into bite-sized pieces. Place in a large soup pot and add chicken stock. If necessary, add enough water to just cover potatoes. Bring potatoes to a boil, then reduce heat to medium and simmer for 10 minutes.

In a large frying pan, add bacon fat, celery, shallots, chopped bacon (save some bacon for garnish), and thyme. Sauté mixture until shallots and celery are soft, about 5 minutes. Add to pot with potatoes.

In the same frying pan over medium heat, melt butter and add flour. Make a roux for the soup by stirring the flour and butter until golden, about 2-3 minutes. Slowly add cream to roux, constantly stirring with a whisk to prevent lumps. Cook, constantly stirring, until mixture is thickened. Add to soup.

Simmer soup over medium-low heat for another 15 minutes. Add salt and pepper to taste. Garnish with more chopped bacon. Serve with a crusty, artisan bread.

Weekend Getaway at the Painted Boat Resort

I couLdn’t have aSked for a Better West Coast Wanderings opportunity when I was invited by Marc Smith of 30 Day Adventures, to join him for a girl’s getaway to the Painted Boat Resort on the Sunshine Coast. I have to confess — as a born and raised BC girl, I had never been to the Sunshine Coast and feel like I should have made my way to the quaint community by now.

Home to the highest per capita population of artists and crafters, I am drawn to the vibe of the Sunshine Coast — very friendly and relaxed. We started in the town of Gibsons, home of Molly’s Reach of Beachcombers fame (if you don’t know what Beachcombers was, Google it, you’re young enough). We explored the shops while wandering around the docks. There is a great new olive oil and vinegar shop that is a must visit, Sunshine Coast Olive Oil Co.

The Painted Boat resort is a relatively short drive from Gibsons and is nestled in the small town of Madeira Park, not far from Pender Harbour. The 31 luxury villas bring new meaning to hotel room — I could have spent the entire trip just enjoying the villa, but the waterfront, spa, and restaurant were calling. I took the opportunity to head out for my first ever kayak around the bay in one of the kayaks available through the resort. These, along with paddleboards, may be rented and used directly from the docks at Painted Boat. I would also be remiss if I didn’t mention their fantastic wine selection. We were able to enjoy a selection of wines that paired well with our adventure, through a list of carefully selected offerings, all of which may be enjoyed in your villa.

Want to visit Painted Boat Resort? They have a great package during September and October for a girl’s getaway that includes your luxurious

villa, a spa treatment, bottle of wine per guest in your booking, and breakfast basket for all of $295. Don’t want the extras? Gather a few friends; you can stay in one of the villas starting at less than $99 per person.

tIPS for thIS trIP:

Schedule plenty of downtime; the view from the resort is enough to make you want to just be.

Pick up organic produce, chicken, seafood, oils and vinegars to take with you to the villas at the Painted Boat. The kitchen begs to be cooked in and the available product makes it difficult not to.

Stroll. There are loads of little shops to take in and plenty of scenery that should be explored.

Take time to enjoy the art of it all. The coast is peppered with artists and crafters. When you see a purple flag flying, feel free to stop in, as the flag means the studio is open.
