Making New and Stronger disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world.
December 26, 2012, Volume 2013 1st Edition
Stewardship of Presence
As United Methodists each of us have pledged to share our prayers,
PRESENCE, gifts service and witness with others in the church and world.
We understand that God has given us blessings in each of these areas
and now it is our job to care for and share these blessings with others.
The technical word for this caring and sharing is stewardship. Oftentimes
when church folk hear the word Stewardship they think immediately of a
financial campaign, but we at FUMC.CV know there is much more to
being a good disciple than simply giving our money. Throughout this next
year we will take a couple weeks to focus on each of the areas, thinking
about and committing to how we can share blessings in each of these
areas with others. This month PRESENCE is before us. The Bible says we are
endowed with the presence of God within us and therefore when we
show up somewhere we are bringing God with us.
The question is where are you going to show up this year?
In worship on a regular basis
At special church events to support the ministries of the church
At special events to encourage the faithfulness of our children & youth
At meetings as a servant leader
At volunteer events in the community to share the love of God
There are so many places that your time can be spent this year sharing
faith and encouraging a deeper faith in others. We hope this year does
not pass with you thinking you are but one soul and will not be
missed. Those seeking God will miss you because it is in you they find
Christ alive.

Join us
Sunday, January 13th
for a service that both
remembers the
Baptism of Jesus and
offers all in
attendance the
opportunity to
reaffirm their baptism.
It is in Baptism that we
are ‘marked’ as
belonging to God
and called to serve in
ministry on behalf of
God.
Join us
Sunday, January 27th
in worship and celebrate
all the ways in which our
FUMC family will commit
to share their presence
with others in the church

Lent 2013 Easter brings a message of hope, offering a new life and a fresh start and we want to share this
with you! This Lent, we invite you to travel with us on a journey retracing the life and ministry of
Jesus Christ through devotional study, small group experiences and worship. We are hoping you
will consider the ways in which Christ is preparing in your heart, through this opportunity, to grow
closer in a relationship of faith. If you’ve ever wanted to know more about Jesus Christ this will be a
perfect time to do so. The devotional study book ($10) will be available soon for purchase in the
Narthex.

Christmas Concert On December 7, 2012 71 vocalists and
16 instrumentalists provided us with an outstanding
rendition of Handel 's Messiah. Our Sanctuary Choir
combined with the Chamber Choir of San Diego State
University to perform this beloved Christmas oratorio.
It was first performed in Dublin on 13 April 1742 and
slowly gained a following that made it now one of the
best known choral works. The presentation of the
Messiah was preceded by the Sisters in Song
singing 7 Joys of Christmas by Kirke Mechem.
Our 13 vocalists were accompanied by a harpist and
presented the Joys of Love, Bells, Mary, Children,
New Year, Dance, and Song. The concert was
conducted by Juan Carlos Acosta.
Angel Tree Christmas Party Saturday, December 8th, our church hosted a Christmas Party
for Angel Tree kids and their care-giver families. This was the first
time that FUMC has hosted an event such as this for both the
children and their care-givers. A wonderful lunch was prepared
and served by our volunteers in Fellowship Hall. There were
presents and games for the children, and of course, Santa made
an appearance for photos with the children! Pastor Brian made
sure they knew our church is here to be a spiritual resource to
them, is always available to them and encouraged the families
to come be a part of our Christian family! This event was a success because of the hard work of Artcel Ruiz and our
many volunteers... and because so many of you opened your hearts to provide gifts, donations and food items for
the party. A sincere THANK YOU goes out to everyone involved! "Well done thou good and faithful servants."
G. Scott Lacy Benefit Gala This Christmas, A Gala Benefitting
The Neighborhood Center &
Heifer International was held on
Sunday, December 16th and was
an event to remember.
G. Scott Lacy presented music
for the season and was joined by
Christopher M Nelson, Sandy
Campbell and April Olsen who
sang various Christmas songs.
Just before intermission we
celebrated Bill and Sue Foley’s
50th wedding anniversary. Money
from the concert went to the
Good Neighborhood Center. We also had a silent
auction of various Nativity sets donated by Carl and
Joanne Hammond. The money from this donation
went to Heifer International. The Spirit of Christmas
filled Fellowship Hall.

9:30am worship on December 19th. The Cherub Choir and Voices in

Puerto Rico, Mexico, Malawi, African American and the United States.
33 children directed by Michiko Lohorn, Andrea Acosta & Traci Schuck
and accompanied by Dr Marva Evans and Amy Kosifas kept us in the
spirit of the season. Thank you to all who sang and who helped.

Leadership Training Tuesday, January 8th, 6-8 pm., Library
All leaders of ministries, committees and teams are asked to be present for this New Year Leadership Training Session.
The training will be comprised of two segments:
1. Nuts & Bolts of Leadership @ FUMC.CV (led by Sue Meyer): This session is all the specifics of
budgets, facilities and forms that you need in order to help you and your team function more
effectively. We are taking all the most common questions asked by our leaders and, with
everyone in the room, attempting to answer those questions in this session.
2. Growing Your Spiritual Leadership Capacity (led by Pastor Brian): This session is less about
details and more about your capacity as a leader: how can you maximize what God has
given you so that you can help your team maximize it’s ministry. We will touch on vision, planning, mentoring,
evaluating and more.

Mexico Mission 2013 This year we will take a team of 20+ short term missionaries from our church to
Ensenada, Mexico where we will partner with an international organization
(YUGO Ministries) and Shepherd of the Hills UMC from Mission Viejo. These partnerships will result in
three houses being constructed and a children’s ministry being conducted for nearly 200 kids. The
20+ people from our church have all paid their expenses of travel, food and lodging and now we
are looking for help from our other partner (that is you, our church) to finish off funding for this
ministry. Our outstanding costs for building and program materials is about $3,000. We hope you will
consider making a gift of support and encouragement to the Mexico 2013 team. We also hope you
will be praying for them while they are the field serving January 17-21.
