EXPERIENCEJanuary 2011 – Present

Mechanical Engineering Manager for SoundLink product line Bose Corporation, Framingham, MABose SoundLink products currently dominate the $3B global market for Bluetooth portable speaker in their price categories.

Formed a category leadership team to manage product strategy and delivery of products to market. The core team includes Marketing, Finance, Engineering, ID and UE.

Planned the strategy for a multi-year product roadmap and the advanced development required to deliver it.

Defined technical requirements and performance targets for new products and accessories.

Managed design reuse and common feature sets across multiple development teams for increased efficiency and customer-facing consistency.

This drove the success of the product line by aligning the organization with common goals and context. Efficiency increased by platforming and designing common feature sets.

Managing a staff of 3 Senior Mechanical Engineers leading development teams. Providing career guidance and growth opportunities that have led to increased

satisfaction and advancement. Actively enabling their success by collaborating on risk management and resource

allocation.Certified Green Belt in Design for Lean Six Sigma (DFLSS) and practitioner of the tools.

Leading discussion group in DFLSS and Lean Product Development to promote adoption and to mentor new trainees in the tools.

Hosting a company-wide forum on DFLSS case studies.

October 1995 – January 2011Senior Lead Mechanical Engineer, Group MgrBose Corporation, Framingham, MALed mechanical development teams to achieve high quality, high volume production launches.

Created aggressive plans and actively managed risks throughout the project. Fully engaged teams with a clear mission, ownership and the opportunity to learn. Managed the high-level schedule and the details. Analyzed and tested the approach, then integrated and validated systems. Confirmed capability in manufacturing of performance and cosmetics.

Managed the career development of direct reports. Recruited and trained new mechanical engineers that joined our group.

Delivered these products and contributed significantly to many others as Project Engineer or Lead Mechanical Engineer.

May 1993 – October 1995Mechanical Engineering Manager | Principal Mechanical Engineer

Inspex Inc, Billerica, MADesigned wafer inspection systems. Many are still in service today and valued by their owners.

Managed a team of mechanical engineers and designers Chief ME for architecture, design and manufacture of semiconductor wafer

inspection systems including robotics for wafer handling, laser scanning, vision capture and precision high-resolution positioning mechanisms all tightly integrated with the software system.

Designed mechanisms for servo, stepper and pneumatic controls. Designed optical systems to be easy to assemble and align to specifications.

March 92 – April 93Senior Mechanical EngineerHologic, Waltham, MA

Designed and launched second generation of a bone densitometry measurement system including a patient table, X ray generating source, XY gantry system for raster scanning, sensor on a precision rotatable arm and an OB GYN chair accessory.

April 91 – March 92Senior Opto-Mechanical EngineerAgfa, Wilmington, MA

Designed high resolution raster scan engines for imagesetters used in the pre-press industry.

Image defects occurred in half-tone images as a result of optical aberration and scan defects. I developed analytical models that predicted these defects caused by optical aberration and scan errors. As a result we were able to analytically allocate tolerances for aberration and scan errors and still produce quality images.

Precision optics mounted on air bearing scanners spinning at 18,000 RPM distort under the inertial loads causing aberration and poor image quality. Designed optics with various countermeasures to prevent or correct the aberration.

November 83 – April 91Senior Opto-Mechanical EngineerGeneral Scanning Inc, Watertown, MA

Developed XYZ laser scanning systems for microfilm, large format printing, resistor trimming and laser etching.

Developed servo- and stepper controlled mechanisms for dynamic focus, spot-size control and "skywriting" or matching of start-stop segments.

Specified lasers and optical components. Designed systems to be easy to assemble and align.

Mar 1982 – November 1983Researcher, Fluid Flow Measurement GroupThe Foxboro Company, Foxboro, MA

Analyzed and tested a variety of fluid flow concepts including vortex shedding flow meters, a low Reynolds number flow measurement system and a resonant mass flow measurement method.

Proof-read a text book on fluid flow measurement and created problem sets for each chapter.

EDUCATIONBachelor of Science, Mechanical Engineering, University of Amherst, 1982Courses in project management, leadership, DFLSS, management, optics, CAD, FEA, molding, DOE and more.
