Talk on benefits of soy beanHealth fundi and those with an agricultural in-terest will have the opportunity to listen to DrMichiel Smit, a world authori-ty on soy beans on Saturday 3May from 15:30 to 17:00 at theHelderberg High School hall onthe campus of Helderberg Col-lege in Somerset West.

Smit, a crop physiologistwhopreviouslyresidedinSom-erset West, has been research-ing soy beans for more than 30years and has increasinglycome to the realisation that thesoy bean was “created for man-kind”.

He states that the soy beanhas the highest protein (essen-tial for life) yield per unit areaof all agricultural products andeven fixes its own nitrogen tomake that protein.

Not only has it a completeprotein containing all the essential amino ac-ids in the right ratio for human requirements, but it is the only legume that provides ampleamounts of the essential omega-3 fatty acid al-pha-linolenic acid and is furthermore loaded

with phytonutrients. Many of the so called anti-nutritional factors

that soya has been accused ofin the Western world, havenow been scientifically provento actually contain health ben-efits.

The stark contrast in healthrisks between the Western, compared to the traditionalOriental people is a silent testi-mony to the merits of a plant-based life style which includesthe humble soy bean.

It has been cultured and con-sumed in that part of the worldfor thousands of years and thebenefits of the oriental life-style which includes regularconsumption of “Edamame” issignificant.

Anyone interested in soybeans and/or a healthy life-

style, should not miss this lecture.Admission is free and no booking is neces-

sary.Enquiries can be directed to bestchoicesev-

NEIL FORTUIN

Jean-PierreMouries is definitely one ofVi-sion AfriKa Vlottenburg’s success stories.

He is currently 18 months into a three-yearmarketing course at Boland College in Stellen-bosch and is busy planning to set up an excitingnew tourism business called Vin Adventure. To top it off, he is also working as a part-timesales consultant at Tele Communications inSomerset West.

We speak to Jean-Pierre about his back-ground, his vision for the future and how Vi-sion AfriKa has helped get him there:Q. Tell us a bit about yourself.A. I grew up in Vlottenburg on a wine farm

called Morgenster, which is about 8 km outsideof Stellenbosch. I lived there with my familyfor the first 17 years of my life, but now livein Eerste Rivier, which is a small town abouthalfway between Stellenbosch and Cape Town.Q. What are your plans for the future?

A. I am in the process of setting up a companycalled Vin Adventure, after entering and win-ning a competition for young entrepreneurslast year – my first year of studying marketingat Boland College.

The competition involved writing a detailedbusiness plan for a proposed new tourism ven-ture covering Stellenbosch and the surround-ing area, and I won one of the prizes for ‘BestBusiness Concept’.

The aim of the initiative is to offer touristsand locals bicycle tours of everything from lo-cal museums to wine farms and restaurants –and I expect to receive my award of five newbicycles later this month, which will help toget my idea off the ground.

After that, I intend to try and get variousbusiness and investment partners on board tohelp me with the necessary funding and skills.

Another goal is to employ unskilled workersfrom the Vlottenburg community in which Igrew up. The idea is to train them so that even-tually they can run the initiative themselvesas it’s important to me to be able to give backto the community that raised me.Q. How has Vision AfriKa helped you to

get where you are today?A. When Vision AfriKa first came to my local

school,StellenzichtHighSchool, torecruitnewlearners, it was the idea of camps and outingsthat grabbed my attention most, as I hadn’t ev-er had the opportunity to go on excursions likethat.

I was initially a bit reticent about joining theprogramme though, in case the other kids atschool bullied me. But in the end, I plucked upmy courage and went for it.

There were definitely times when I felt likegiving up on my dreams, but Vision AfriKagave me the necessary resources to help makesound decisions and think critically about myfuture.

It also helped me to see that without schooland/or tertiary education, there was no waythatIcouldriseabovemycurrentcircumstanc-es. But I know now that I can do it.

So I thank Vision AfriKa for everything ithas done for me, but I thank God even morefor blessing me with the wonderful opportuni-ties in life that I have received.
