The study of history is importantbecause each generation needs toknow about the people, events andactions of a former generation inorder to make wise decisions in theirtime. With every five year generalelection cycle, a new cadre of votersis added to the national voters list. Thevoting population in Belize grows byabout 9% every five years. It istherefore important for us to let themknow from whence we came inorder to afford them the opportunityto make informed and wise decisionsin their time. Here now is lesson #1 in thepolitical history of Belize: After five years in opposition, thePeople’s United Party (PUP) wasreelected to office in 1998. Those18year old voters who will be voting forthe first time in the scheduled 2017general elections were not yet born in1998 when the PUP was elected. Bythe time the PUP term ended with theirreelection for a second term in 2003,those who will be 18 in 2017 andvoting for the first time would havejust turned four and of kinder gardenage. The real rape of the nation by thePUP began in their second term, between 2003 and 2008, by the timethe PUP were booted out of office in2008, they left the nation with theinfamous two BILLION dollarSUPER bond choking the nationaleconomy. The new 2017 voters wereonly nine years of age and merelyheading into Std III of their primaryschool education when the PUP wasbooted out of office in 2008. At thattender age they had very little, if anyknowledge of what had politicallytaken place in the first nine years oftheir young lives. Little did these innocent future

Lesson #1 In Belizean Political Historyleaders of our nation know thatthe PUP administration had ineffect, through rampant corruption, demolished their future. A recentruling by the Caribbean Court ofJustice described their actions as“malignant tumors that eat awayat our democracy”. Their actionsaccording to the ruling would have setback the nation by “300 years”. Too young were the future leadersof Belize to comprehend theimplications of the PUP selling out alltheir major public utilities – light, waterand telephone as well as the nation’sonly international port of entry by airand their major international sea portof entry in additional to the nationalprinting institution. The future leadersknew not that after privatizing thenation’s central prison, the documentwas already written up for theprivatization of the national policeforce. Having not personally experiencedthese recent crippling corrupt blowsto their nation, the devastation causedin the early 90’s by the PUP economiccitizenship hurricane and passporttsunami is even further removedfrom the grasp of the generationgetting ready to lead our nation. Itis therefore our duty and ourresponsibility to teach them thishistory because they must knowabout the people, events and actionsof a former generation in order tomake wise decisions in their time. Wemust tell them that an auditor general’sreport of that era informed that over7.5 million dollars from the sale ofpassports never did make it to thenational treasury with the strongpossibility of making it into someone’spersonal bank account. In teaching them the politicalhistory of the nation we must tell themthat in the early 90’s the PUP came

to western Belize telling us that theywould bring dirt cheap electricity tothe nation with the building of a damon the macal river. There were a few smart persons in ourmidst who told them that dammingour Macal River would kill the river andthat it would not result in cheaperelectricity rates. They convinced themasses that these people were againstdevelopment and portrayed them asenemies of the nation. One of them, serving as Chairman of our Belize SocialSecurity Board at the time took 3.34million dollars of our socialsecurity money on the pretence ofbuying shares in the dam project. “His”social security gave him the people’smoney and it turned out that not asingle share was ever purchased forour Social Security Board with ourmoney. They went on to build twoadditional dams on the Macal one atChalillo and the other at Vaca Falls.Totally ignoring the employableamong us, they brought in hundredsof manual workers primarily fromNepal. Our Macal River is dying ifnot already dead. The nation is stillwaiting for the promised dirt cheapelectricity rates. There was a time when, prior to thedamming of our Macal river at VacaFalls, with every annual flood theblessing in the form of beautiful sandfrom the Pine Ridge would emerge onthe sandy banks of the Macal in bothSan Ignacio and Santa Elena as thewater receded. This was nature’s wayof bringing some of the nation’s wealth

untold to landowners on the banksof the river. The sale of the sandwas a means of income for theselandowners. A dam was constructedat Vaca Falls effectively putting thePine Ridge sand stream behind thecold wet wall the dam at Vaca Fallsand the sand stopped flowing into SanIgnacio and Santa Elena. Not beingreplenished and washed by the flowof sand the few remaining old stoneson the Macal River bed are nowblack and slimy. Today landowners in the area aremining the very last amount of PineRidge sand as it is coming upcontaminated with mud. This isoccurring while the beautiful PineRidge sand is accumulating behind thedam at Vaca Falls probably for futuresale by the owners of the dam atthe expense our people who onceharvested it. Furthermore, there was a time, prior to the damming of the Macalwhen harvesting the river fish wasa source of healthy food formany. Today, Health officials areadvising us not to eat fish from ourMacal River due to the high mercurylevel which they say is hazardous forour health. This generation must be thought ourhistory. They need to know of theactions of the PUP in order that theymake wise decisions when voting forthe first time. We pledge to continuethis history lesson. We believe that ifwe fail to do so we would have donea disservice to the next generation ofBelizeans.

SAN IGNACIO TOWN, Cayo,Monday, July 14, 2014: Evolution is defined as theprocess of the old making way forthe new. There was a time several yearsago when the food we ate wassold from behind a counter. The customer would enter thestore, stand in front of thecounter and ask for the item. Thestore keeper would get the itemand hand it to the customer. The customer would pay the bill

and depart the store. In those daysthe customer dare not go behindthe counter. Times have changed. Today thecustomer walks the isles, gets themerchandise, pays and walks out.Infrastructural developmentremoves the old and ushers in thenew. This change can be seen onBurns Avenue in San Ignacio, theupgraded lower section of BurnsAvenue is already attracting thenew. One such example is therecently opened Dibary Store,

Obese women may have a "foodlearning impairment" that couldexplain their attitude to food, research from Yale School ofMedicine suggests. Tests on groups of obese andhealthy-weight people found thatthe obese women performedworst when asked to remember asequence of food picture cards. Writing in Current Biology,Yale researchers tested 135 menand women. The findings could lead to newways to tackle obesity, the studysays. Study author Ifat Levy ,assistant professor at YaleSchool of Medicine, said thedifference in the performance ofthe obese women comparedwith the other groups was "reallystriking" and "significant". The tests looked at anindividual's ability to learnand predict the appearance ofpictures of food or money oncoloured cards. The participants were told theywould be given whatever appearedon these "reward" cards. In the first phase, the rewardcards always followed aparticular coloured card in a

sequence. Later, the order waschanged and the reward cardsappeared following a differentcoloured card. During this time, participantswere asked to predict thelikelihood of a reward cardappearing as the cards wereshown one by one. The results showed that obesewomen performed worst becausethey overestimated how often thepictures of food, includingpretzels or chocolate, appeared.

patterns." The study said it was not clearwhat lay behind the learningdeficit in obese women. In contrast, obese men did notshow any signs of a foodlearning impairment.

Body Image The study suggested thatwomen who are obese act thisway because of particularconcerns about food or becausethey feel more unhappy ordissatisfied about their bodyimage. Previous research suggests thatthere are differences in how menand women perceive obesity. Future research is likely tofocus on whether the food-spe-cific learning problem is a resultof obesity or a potential factor incausing obesity by testingindividuals before and afterweight loss. The Yale researchers said theirresults called for a shift in focus. "Rather than target theseindividuals' behaviour withfood, we suggest that a success-ful intervention should aimto modify their interactions withother cues that determine theireating patterns," they wrote.

Even after researchers hadaccounted for other factors, therewas still a large difference intheir learning performance. Prof Levy said: "This is not ageneral learning impairment,as obese women had no problemlearning when the reward wasmoney rather than food. "An intriguing possibility isthat, by modifying flawedassociation between food andenvironmental cues, we maybe able to change eating

BY: Mar y Whelchel Would you like to dosomething eternally significanttoday? I'm sure every person whoknows Jesus as Savior would liketo be involved in some activitythat is truly important. But you'reprobably thinking, "I can't doanything eternally significanttoday. I have to go to workand do all kinds of mundane, insignificant things." It's true: most of our livesconsist of a series of small, seemingly insignificant choresand duties. But remember, eternally significant doesn't meanglorious or grand. It doesn'talways include Bible verses orsermons or church music. Let me give you an example ofhow you can turn small thingsinto meaningful things. You willprobably talk to a receptionist oran intermediary of some kindduring your work week. Do youknow that people in these jobs areoften treated like machines? Wehardly ever think of themas people, with problems andworries and stress. They're justvoices on the other end of thephone.

So, when you talk with thatperson that you normally ignore, put a smile in your voice and giveher or him a cheery greeting. Bepolite and kind, even if you're puton hold. If you have a moment, ask them how the day is going forthem. Not long ago I was buyingsomething in a store, and theclerk wasn't being very helpful. That irritated me, so I gave hermy "I wish you had bettercustomer service skills" look, and walked off. As I did, the quiet voice of theHoly Spirit said, "Y ou blew it.You had an opportunity toshow that person what Jesus islike, and instead you showedher what you'r e like. Youmissed a chance to do some-thing significant, and you'llnever have that chance withthat person again." You see, I could have smiled atthat clerk, been especially kind, maybe even struck up a smallconversation and asked how shewas doing. Then when I walkedaway, that clerk would havethought, "W ow, that woman isdif ferent. Wonder why?"

Making the Mundane Meaningful

Instead, if she thought anything,it was probably "Customers arenothing but trouble." Look for your opportunitiestoday to turn mundane

Malaysia Jet Crashes In East Ukraine Conflict Zone A Malaysia Airlines jetcarrying 295 people has crashedin east Ukraine on a flight fromAmsterdam to Kuala Lumpur. There are no signs of survivorsat the scene of the crash near thevillage of Grabovo, in rebel-heldterritory close to the border withRussia. Both sides in Ukraine's civilconflict accused each other ofshooting down the plane with amissile. It is still not clear whythe plane came down. It is the second disastersuffered by Malaysia Airlines thisyear. Flight MH370 disappeared enroute from Malaysia to Chinain April and still has not beenfound. At a news conference atSchiphol airport, MalaysiaAirlines' European chief HuibGorter said they were stilltrying to identify some of thepassengers from flight MH17. He said of the passengersthat have been identified therewere: * 154 Dutch nationals, 27Australians, 23 Malaysians, 11Indonesians * Six Britons, four Germans, four Belgians, three from thePhilippines and one Canadian * All 15 of the crew wereMalaysian Other airlines have announcedthey are now avoiding easternUkraine Analysis: Jonathan Marcus,BBC News If it does turn out that theBoeing 777 was shot down bythe separatists - with weaponrysupplied by Moscow - thenit could significantly alterthe terms of the wholedebate surrounding the Ukrainecrisis. Over the past few days therehas been growing concern amongWestern governments thatRussia was stepping up itsmilitary support for theseparatists in eastern Ukraine. Nato spokesmen insist thatmore and more heavy militaryequipment has moved fromRussian stockpiles to theseparatists across the border. In response, the United Stateshas strengthened its economicsanctions against Moscow - it isthreatening even strongeraction - though the EuropeanUnion has so far failed to follow

Washington's lead. But if Russia in any wayhad a hand in this tragedy thenthe pressure - especially onthe Europeans - for muchtougher sanctions will onlygrow.. Malaysian Prime MinisterNajib Razak spoke of hisshock and said he was launchingan immediate inquiry into thecrash. "This is a tragic day in whathas already been a tragic yearfor Malaysia," he said. US and Ukrainian officials saidthey believed the plane had beenbrought down by a missile. Ukrainian President PetroPoroshenko said it was an "actof terrorism". Foreign Minister PavloKlimkin told the BBC hehad intercepted phoneconversations that proved theplane was shot down by pro-Russian separatists. But Russian PresidentVladimir Putin blamed theUkraine government forrestarting military operationsin the area, where it is trying toregain control from pro-Russianrebels. "The country in whoseairspace this happened bearsresponsibility for it," he said. Separatist leader AlexanderBorodai accused the Ukrainiangovernment of downing theairliner. Ukraine's defence ministryissued a statement saying therewere no air force jets in the area

and no surface-to-air systemsbeing used against the rebels. The British government hascalled for an emergency meetingof the UN Security Council todiscuss the crisis in Ukraine as aresult of the crash.

The plane fell between KrasniLuch in Luhansk region andShakhtarsk in the neighbouringregion of Donetsk. Aviation expert: "If this was ashoot down... it would have to

Alzheimer's disease (AD), alsoknown in medical literature asAlzheimer disease, is the mostcommon form of dementia. There is no cure for the disease, which worsens as it progresses, and eventually leads todeath. It was first describedby German psychiatristand neuropathologist AloisAlzheimer in 1906 and wasnamed after him. Most often,AD is diagnosed in people over65 years of age, although theless-prevalent early-onsetAlzheimer's can occur muchearlier. In 2006, there were 26.6million people worldwide withAD. Alzheimer's is predicted toaffect 1 in 85 people globally by2050. Although Alzheimer's diseasedevelops differently for everyindividual, there are manycommon symptoms. Earlysymptoms are often mistakenlythought to be 'age-related'concerns, or manifestations ofstress. In the early stages, themost common symptom isdifficulty in remembering recentevents, known as short termmemory loss. When AD issuspected, the diagnosis isusually confirmed with tests thatevaluate behaviour and thinkingabilities, often followed bya brain scan if available, however, examination of braintissue is required for adefinitive diagnosis. As thedisease advances, symptoms caninclude confusion, irritability, aggression, mood swings, trouble with language, andlong-term memory loss. As theperson's condition declines theyoften withdraw from family andsociety. Gradually, bodilyfunctions are lost, ultimatelyleading to death. Since thedisease is different for eachindividual, predicting how it willaffect the person is difficult. ADdevelops for an unknown andvariable amount of time beforebecoming fully apparent, and itcan progress undiagnosed foryears. On average, the lifeexpectancy following diagnosisis approximately seven years.Fewer than 3% of individualslive more than 14 years afterdiagnosis. The disease course isdivided into four stages, with

Alzheimer's DiseaseAlzheimer's DiseaseAlzheimer's DiseaseAlzheimer's DiseaseAlzheimer's Diseaseprogressive patterns of cognitiveand functional impairments.

Pre-dementia The first symptoms are oftenmistakenly attributed to ageing orstress. Detailed neuropsycho-logical testing can reveal mildcognitive difficulties up to eightyears before a person fulfils theclinical criteria for diagnosis ofAD. These early symptoms canaffect the most complex dailyliving activities. The mostnoticeable deficit is memoryloss, which shows up as difficultyin remembering recently learnedfacts and inability to acquire newinformation. Subtle problems with theexecutive functions ofattentiveness, planning, flexibility, and abstract thinking,or impairments in semanticmemory (memory of meanings, and concept relationships) canalso be symptomatic of the earlystages of AD. Apathy can beobserved at this stage, andremains the most persistentneuropsychiatric symptomthroughout the course of thedisease. Depressive symptoms, irritability and reduced awarenessof subtle memory difficultiesalso occur commonly. Thepreclinical stage of the diseasehas also been termed mildcognitive impairment, butwhether this term corresponds toa different diagnostic stage oridentifies the first step of AD isa matter of dispute.

Early In people with AD theincreasing impairment oflearning and memory eventuallyleads to a definitive diagnosis. Ina small portion of them, difficulties with language, executive functions, perception(agnosia), or execution ofmovements (apraxia) are moreprominent than memoryproblems. AD does not affect allmemory capacities equally.Older memories of the person'slife (episodic memory), factslearned (semantic memory), andimplicit memory (the memory ofthe body on how to do things, such as using a fork to eat) areaffected to a lesser degree thannew facts or memories. Language problems are mainlycharacterised by a shrinkingvocabulary and decreased word

fluency, which lead to a generalimpoverishment of oral andwritten language. In this stage, the person with Alzheimer'sis usually capable ofcommunicating basic ideasadequately. While performingfine motor tasks such as writing, drawing or dressing, certainmovement co-ordination andplanning difficulties (apraxia)may be present but they arecommonly unnoticed. As thedisease progresses, people withAD can often continue toperform many tasksindependently, but may needassistance or supervision with themost cognitively demandingactivities.

Moderate Progressive deteriorationeventually hinders independence, with subjects being unable toperform most common activitiesof daily living. Speechdifficulties become evidentdue to an inability to recallvocabulary, which leads tofrequent incorrect wordsubstitutions (paraphasias).Reading and writing skills arealso progressively lost. Complexmotor sequences become lesscoordinated as time passes andAD progresses, so the risk offalling increases. During thisphase, memory problemsworsen, and the person may failto recognise close relatives.Long-term memory, which waspreviously intact, becomesimpaired. Behavioural and neuropsychi-atric changes become moreprevalent. Common manifesta-tions are wandering, irritabilityand labile affect, leading tocrying, outbursts ofunpremeditated aggression, orresistance to caregiving.Sundowning can also appear.Approximately 30% of peoplewith AD develop illusionarymisidentifications and otherdelusional symptoms. Subjectsalso lose insight of their diseaseprocess and limitations(anosognosia). Urinaryincontinence can develop. Thesesymptoms create stress forrelatives and caretakers, whichcan be reduced by moving theperson from home care to otherlong-term care facilities.

Advanced

During the final stage of AD,the person is completelydependent upon caregivers.Language is reduced to simplephrases or even single words, eventually leading to completeloss of speech. Despite the lossof verbal language abilities, people can often understand andreturn emotional signals.Although aggressiveness can stillbe present, extreme apathy andexhaustion are much morecommon symptoms. Personswith Alzheimer's disease willultimately not be able to performeven the simplest tasks withoutany assistance. Muscle mass andmobility deteriorate to the pointwhere they are bedridden, andthey lose the ability to feedthemselves. AD is a terminalillness, with the cause of deathtypically being an external factor, such as infection of pressureulcers or pneumonia, not thedisease itself.

PREVENTION At present, there is nodefinitive evidence to supportthat any particular measure iseffective in preventing AD.Global studies of measures toprevent or delay the onset of ADhave often produced inconsistentresults. Epidemiological studieshave proposed relationshipsbetween certain modifiablefactors, such as diet, cardiovas-cular risk, pharmaceuticalproducts, or intellectualactivities among others, and apopulation's likelihood ofdeveloping AD. Only furtherresearch, including clinical trials, will reveal whether these factorscan help to prevent AD.

Medication Although cardiovascularrisk factors, such ashypercholesterolaemia, hyper-tension, diabetes, and smoking, are associated with a higher riskof onset and course of AD,statins, which are cholesterollowering drugs, have not beeneffective in preventing orimproving the course of thedisease. Long-term usage of non-steroidal anti-inflammatorydrugs (NSAIDs) is associatedwith a reduced likelihood ofdeveloping AD. Human postmortem studies, in animal

Alzheimer's DiseaseAlzheimer's DiseaseAlzheimer's DiseaseAlzheimer's DiseaseAlzheimer's Diseasemodels, or in vitro investigationsalso support the notionthat NSAIDs can reduceinflammation related toamyloid plaques. However, trialsinvestigating their use aspalliative treatment have failed toshow positive results, apparentlybecause the brain NSAIDconcentration after an oralNSAID dose is exceedinglysmall. No prevention trial hasbeen completed. Hormone re-placement therapy, although pre-viously used, may increase therisk of dementia.

Lifestyle People who engage inintellectual activities such asreading, playing board games, completing crossword puzzles, playing musical instruments, orregular social interaction show areduced risk for Alzheimer'sdisease. This is compatible withthe cognitive reserve theory, which states that some lifeexperiences result in more

efficient neural functioningproviding the individual acognitive reserve that delays theonset of dementia manifestations. Education delays theonset of AD syndrome, but is not re-lated to earlier death after diagnosis.Learning a second language even laterin life seems to delay gettingAlzheimer disease. Physical activityis also associated with a reduced riskof AD.

Diet People who eat a mediterraneandiet have a lower risk of AD, andit may improve outcomes inthose with the disease. Those whoeat a diet high in saturated fats andsimple carbohydrates have ahigher risk. The mediterraneandiet's beneficial cardiovasculareffect has been proposed as themechanism of action. There islimited evidence that light tomoderate use of alcohol, particularly red wine, isassociated with lower risk of AD.There is tentative evidence thatcaffeine may be protective. A

number of foods high inflavonoids such as cocoa, redwine, and tea may decrease therisk of AD. Reviews on the use of vitaminsand minerals have not foundenough consistent evidence torecommend them. This includesvitamin A, C, E, selenium, zinc, and folic acid with or without vi-tamin B12. Additionally vitaminE is associated with health risks.Trials examining folic acid (B9)and other B vitamins failed toshow any significant associationwith cognitive decline. In thosealready affected with AD addingdocosahexaenoic acid, an Omega3 fatty acid, to the diet has notbeen found to slow decline. Curcumin as of 2010 has notshown benefit in people eventhough there is tentative evidencein animals. There is inconsistentand unconvincing evidencethat ginkgo has any positiveeffect on cognitive impairmentand dementia, and a recent studyconcludes that it has no effect in

reducing the rate of ADincidence. As of 2008 there isno concrete evidence thatcannabinoids are effective inimproving the symptoms of ADor dementia. Some research inits early stages however lookspromising.

Others Some studies have shown anincreased risk of developing ADwith environmental factors suchthe intake of metals, particularlyaluminium. The quality of someof these studies has beencriticised, and other studies haveconcluded that there is norelationship between theseenvironmental factors and thedevelopment of AD. While some studies suggestthat extremely low frequencyelectromagnetic fields mayincrease the risk for Alzheimer'sdisease, reviewers found thatfurther epidemiological andlaboratory investigations of thishypothesis are needed. Smokingis a significant AD risk factor.Systemic markers of the innateimmune system are risk factorsfor late-onset AD.

Malaysia Jet Crashes In East Ukraine Conflict Zonehave been a sophisticated airdefence system" At least 100 bodies have beenfound so far at the scene, anemergency services worker toldReuters news agency, withwreckage spread across an areaof up to about 15km (nine miles)in diameter. Broken pieces of the wingswere marked with the blue and redpaint of Malaysian Airlines. "I was working in the field

on my tractor when I heard thesound of a plane and then abang and shots," a witnesscalled Vladimir told Reuters. "Then I saw the plane hitthe ground and break in two. There was thick black smoke." A separatist rebel fromnearby Krasnyi Luch who gavehis name as Sergei said: "Frommy balcony I saw a planebegin to descend from a greatheight and then heard twoexplosions."

The head of the Russian AirTraffic Controllers' Union,Sergei Kovalyov, told BBCRussian that the airspace overeastern Ukraine had remainedopen during the conflict becausethe planes previously shot downhad tended to be helicopters orlow-flying fast jets. "In order to bring down anairplane from an altitude of10,000m, you need to have veryserious weapons…. missiles,"he said. "It's either a mistakeor a terrorist act."

Ukraine has accused Russia'smilitary of supplying advancedmissiles to the rebels. Earlier on Thursday, Ukrainianofficials blamed the Russian airforce for shooting down oneof its ground attack jets onWednesday, and a transport planeon Monday. In 2001, Ukraine admittedits military was probablyresponsible for shooting down aRussian airliner that crashed intothe Black Sea, killing all 78people on board.

So, you may be wondering:How is it that this special ladycould have lived so long? Weasked her and she said that shegrew up eating a lot of plantain, fish and locally grown chickens,as well as organic vegetables. Shesaid that the fruits and vegetablesin her days were never “forcegrown” with fertilizer. She takesa “little” shot of green aniseedtwo or three times a week to warmup the body. According to hercaretaker, apart from reducedhearing, Mrs. Camilla suffers nomajor medical complications. She is neither diabetic norhypertensive. Mrs. Camilla is truly blessed. It was a pleasure to share theoccasion with this wonderful ladyin the company of relatives andfriends.

Bateman Alleges Brutal Police Treatmenttreatment continued while insidethe police station under thewatchful eye of an overheadsurveillance camera. Stillhandcuffed, he was reportedlyordered on his knees and wasallegedly kicked in the back, chest and face. Bateman emerged from theencounter with bruises to variousparts of the body including twobite wounds which he allegedwere inflicted by one of thepolicemen he later identified asDale Santos attached to theSpecial Patrol Unit, a unit notdirectly attached to the SanIgnacio Police Detachment. Officer commanding the SanIgnacio Police Detachment,Supt. Dinsdale Thompson, confirmed the receipt ofBateman’s report, the viewing ofthe footage from the surveillancecamera as well as the launchingof an investigation againstthe policemen allegedlyresponsibility for injuries causedto Simon Bateman. This begs the question, whilethe policeman from the SpecialPatrol Unit is not directlyconnected to the San Ignaciopolice detachment, where was the

policeman in charge of thestation at the time? How did thepoliceman in charge allow thiskind of action to take place in“his” station and on hiswatch? We are trusting that theinvestigation will require thewriting of reports by everysingle policeman on duty at thematerial time. For their part, the police

proceeded with arrestingBateman on bribery, assault andresisting arrest charges. Heappeared in court on Monday,July 14 where he pled not guiltyto all three charges. He was

offered and met the one thousanddollar bail. The matter, on thesestraight forward charges, wasgranted a 10 week adjournment.Bateman returns to court onThursday, September 25.
