STARplex Swim School

General Information STARplex Swim Centre area consists of two indoor pools Our main pool is 25 metres in length with 8 lanes, ranging in depth from 0.9m–1.8m with a tempera-ture of up to 30° C. Our learner’s pool is 15 metres in length with 3 lanes and a step beach entry, ranging in depth from 0.6m–0.9m with a temperature of up to 33° C. Toilets and change rooms are located in the pool area for your use. We do ask that toilets not be used for changing purposes. We recommend that boys and girls aged 8 years and over use the gender specific change rooms. A family room is avail-able for use. Please ask staff on duty. Seating is available in the pool area whilst children have their lessons. All pool equipment should be left for teacher use only during lessons. Children should be supervised at all times in the pool area. Children under the age of 10 must not be left unsupervised in the pool area. For their own safety, please do not allow children to sit on the side of the pools, or to lean over the edge of the pools. We encourage pool safety at all times and ask that parents assist our staff to reinforce this for the children’s benefit.

Recommended Swim Wear

All children must be in appropriate swimwear during lessons. Children are encouraged to wear fitted swimwear during their lesson. Swimming lessons are a long-term investment and our staff continually report that children who wear board shorts and the like, will take longer to progress through the levels. Board shorts fill up with water and make the legs extremely heavy, restricting flexibility as well as causing poor technique resulting in an inefficient kick. Goggles are of great benefit to children in the water allowing clear sight and for keeping water out of their eyes. STARplex Swim Centre staff promotes the wearing of swim caps to assist children whilst learning to swim. In addition to ensuring better water quality, children are able to keep hair out of their eyes and reduce drag therefore improving their ability to learn their strokes.

Goggles and swim caps can be purchased from the STAR Store located at the main entrance. Please ensure all swimming attire is named.

Health Standards STARplex Swim Centre maintain the highest water quality through UV disinfection and chlorine. Health Standards must be adhered to at all times and as such we ask that children be excluded from swim-ming in the following instances: Chicken Pox School Sores Open wounds Cold Sores Conjunctivitis Children with planter warts may swim, providing they are receiving treatment from a doctor and have them covered whilst swimming. Children who have had diarrhea should not swim for a period of 14 days. Children who have had gastro should not swim for a period of 7 days. If your child suffers from asthma we recommend they have their puffer with them at swimming les-sons and if they have asthma plan that it is present-ed to the swim centre office. It has been documented many times that swimming can be extremely beneficial for both children and adults suffering from asthma.

Welcome to STARplex Swim School. The aim of our program is to provide a friendly, encouraging, ability based learning environment offering quality technique based instruction on the four competitive strokes and other water safety skills aimed at bringing swimmers to graduation through a progressive certificate reward system, giving the opportunity to either continue in competitive swimming or the skills to participate confidently in a variety of water based activities.

WARNING If you need to take photo of

During this time supervisors are busy with swim school assessments and speaking to instruc-tors and parents about swimmers progress. If you need to book a make up lesson or make a per-manent change to your lesson day/time, the best time to contact the swim centre office is between the hours of 8am and 3pm Monday - Friday and 8am -2pm Saturdays and Sundays either in person or by phone 8522 0685 or 8523 8742. If you do phone the swim centre during our busy swim school times, par-ticularly Monday - Friday afternoons, supervisors may need to take a message and will happily call you back as soon as possible.

Assessments

Our supervisors are assessing the children as re-quested by either the instructors or by their own evaluation of all classes. If you would like feedback at any time about your child's progress please speak to a swim school supervisor.

Sammy STARfish Certificates

STARplex Swim School uses a progressive style of teaching based on a curriculum aimed at brining chil-dren through a certificate reward system. We offer from 6 months of age up to our Turtles level. Once each level has been completed your swimmer will receive a certificate. Supervisors will assess all lev-els on a rotational basis throughout the term. The certificates are on display in the swim centre en-trance.

Our Curriculum

When you enrol in STARplex Swim School, your child will be put into a class according to ability. Of-ten children will need an assessment to enable us to find the right class for your child's ability. Swim cen-tre staff can arrange this assessment at no cost and it will take about 5 - 10 minutes. We will then find a suitable day and time and enrol your child in lessons.

Make up lessons STARplex Swim School offers make up lessons to those families who have missed lessons within the term. The following applies to all make up lessons All clients will receive a maximum of 2 make

up lessons per child per term at no cost. The 2 make up lessons do not accumulate

tended, this make up lesson will not be able to be re issued

STARplex Swim School STARsquad Program The STARsquad program consists of a 5 tiered swim program. In Mini Squads swimmers will continue to refine technique and begin to learn the pace clock, dives and turns to High Performance where athletes are aiming for World Championship Meets. In our STARsquad program we are lucky enough to have former Australian Team Coach Stephen Garner as Head Coach. Steve is supported by New Zealand Coach Craig Stewart who heads up our Junior Squad Program. Alex Palmer is our Bronze level coach who heads up our Rising Stars squad. Star Swim is a non competitive stream where swimmers can work on their fitness and still have the opportunity to move over to competitive swimming in the Rising Stars squad if they wish to do so.

In the Rising Stars it is expected that swimmers will join the STARplex Swim Club to enable them to compete in Swimming SA registered swim meets and really start looking at swimming as a competitive sport. The STARplex Swim Club is a fantastic way to get involved in swimming. The swim club host Come n Try’s throughout the year and 2 Swimming SA Carnivals each year here at STARplex. The swimmers and their families get together socially and it is an opportunity for friendships to be formed and a love of swimming to be developed. Please contact STARplex Swim Club Registrar Kelly Dunbar on 0400 900 874.
