wander, don’t wonderAt STA Travel, we’ve been wandering around the world getting weird, wild and wonderful in our socks and sandals since 1979. After 35 years we’re still exploring, still wide-eyed and still impossibly loved-up with the world.

Fortunately in the decades that followed, fashionable society saw t to intervene and force us into swapping our misguided 70s footwear for a shiny, new pair of neon Havaianas. We’re much happier now, people laugh a lot less.

Otherwise we’re still travelling and learning from the world - trekking through new territory, re-discovering old ground and playing street-cart roulette wherever we dare.

This brochure is all about adventures by campervan ... if recently you’ve been idly eyeing up the outside world wondering what’s out there, it’s time to stop wondering and start wandering.

Stay barefoot and happy. Love, STA Travel.

There’s just something about being totally mobile, about carrying your house with you and having total freedom to decide where to go and where to stay, about heading o on the open road with the wind in your hair (that’s if you open the window). In fact, so famous have Australia, New Zealand and USA become for this style of travel, it’s almost a rite of passage to hire your own home on wheels as part of your big free-wheeling adventure. And guess what? We’ve got a mind-blowing range of campers that we’ve chosen especially for you with your comfort, safety and purse strings in mind.

set yourself freeJump in your campervan, turn up the music, and head where you want to head, stop where you want to stop, spend extra days at places you like, skip right by places you don’t like, and generally do what you want every day. There are no commitments, you’re your own boss and you make the rules.

Wake up to a new view everydayImagine being able to see a di erent view out of your window every morning?! Here is a little secret: that’s totally the case when you travel in a campervan! No kidding. Plus, it’s totally up to you whether you want to see lakes, mountains or gob-smacking canyons… It’s amazing what you can see through the campervan window.

Reunited with natureWhile hectically typing on our keyboards set in our multi-storey o° ce buildings, we dream about starry nights by the camp re. Then suddenly it all becomes clear - we urgently need a campervan holiday! Oh those golden sunrises and ery sunsets, the sound of wind in the trees and rain on the roof, the smells of pine forest and seaside saltiness... Few other forms of travel can take you so close to the mighty Mother Nature.

Be socialOne of the best parts of travelling at your own pace and being able to change your plans is that you get to meet loads of great people on the way and make friends for life. Campsites are buzzing with cool characters from all corners of the world. Strike up a conversation as you linger around the barbecue and who knows, you might be spending your next holiday at your new mate’s villa in Italy!

Allow for surprisesThere is always an odd waterfall around the corner or a ock of sheep (a.k.a. tra° c jam) on the road when you follow your nose down roads less travelled. The unplanned, unexpected and exciting – that’s what makes adventures worth their name. And travelling by campervan really is the perfect means for the adventure of a lifetime!

WHYGO BY CAMPER?

the perfect day

08:00 Wake up with a view of paradise out of the back window.

09:00 Get the bacon sizzling on the cooker in your campervan.

10:00 Head over to the shower block at the campsite to freshen up (or your shower onboard if you have one).

10:30 Time to hit the road for today’s amazing adventure (just don’t forget to unplug the water & electricity before you drive o !).

13:00 Fix yourself a picnic and nd a fabulous spot to enjoy it.

18:00 Find your nearest campsite or place to spend the night.

19:30 Throw your tasty steaks and fresh sh on the barbecue, and dine al fresco.

21:00 Plan tomorrow over a few beers!

Page 7: STA Travel NZ - Go By Camper Brochure

DO• Get lost. The best parts of an adventure

happen in the least expected places.

• Change your mind. Make a plan – then break it. Let the road be your guide!

• Check your destination’s camping regulations - they dier from country to country. Nobody wants to be eaten by a bear.

• Freedom camp where permitted. It’s one of the greatest benets of carrying your bedroom, shower and toilet with you.

• Pre-book ahead of time the experiences and campsites you don’t want to miss, especially in high season.

• Pack your belongings in soft bags as opposed to bulky suitcases.

• Familiarise yourself with local road rules (American cops carry very big guns).

DON’T• Have a plan – if you have too much of

one, you may miss the magic.

• Underestimate driving distances and times – everything looks smaller on a map.

• Attempt undercover car parks. Open top might be cool in a convertible but your camper might struggle to pull it o.

• Drive on the beach. Campervans are HEAVY and you will sink like a stone into the sand. Not a good look.

Mighty is a great value brand operating in Australia and New Zealand and is backed by Australasia’s biggest campervan company. They oer reliable yet funky two, three, four and six berth campervans suitable for all travellers on a budget, no matter what your age.

Britz operates in Australia, New Zealand and USA. They are the recognised market leader, providing a range of 2WD and 4WD campervan options with all you could need on the road. In USA, Britz oers comfortable 4-berth vehicles with simple more inclusive rates.

maui has been the trusted name in campervan rentals throughout Australia and New Zealand for nearly 25 years, with vehicles that accommodate from two to six people. maui is all about space, comfort and style coupled with genuine and personalised service.

Consider when choosing the camper:How many nights will you spend sleeping in the camper? If you plan to mainly stay in hotels/hostels you may choose to sacrice space and/or comfort in the campervan.

Will you want to cook/prepare food in the van? If so, choose a camper with enough kitchen facilities to satisfy your inner chef.

How long are you planning on travelling? For lengthy adventures, you might want to choose a bigger camper to be able to keep the dining area up at all times.

When are you travelling? Air con might be a good investment in summer, but winters can get chilly so make sure you choose a well-heated van to keep you nice and toasty.

Where are you planning on travelling? Make sure your camper can handle the road conditions and remember that some vehicles are not allowed to travel on unsealed roads.

DO’S AND DON’TS OF CAMPERVAN HOLIDAYS

YOUR CHOICE OF CAMPERVAN

While you might make every eort to plan your whole holiday down to the last minute, the beauty of a campervan holiday is the fact that you don’t need to be so time strict on yourself…sure, there will be the must-do experiences that can’t be missed and we advise if travelling in the peak periods you book your vehicle and campsites ahead. Here’s our quick guide for ¤rst time/rookie ‘campervanners’:

Please note: The prices shown on the next pages are only a guide, and uctuate according to the laws of supply and demand. It is always best to book as far in advance as possible. If you avoid school holidays, peak travel times and public holidays, you can get a campervan for as little as $44 per day!

Top tip: Certain routes are more popular than others and if you can travel in the opposite direction, it can often be cheaper. For example, a one-way rental from Auckland to Christchurch is likely to be more expensive than the other way round.
