DO• Get lost. The best parts of an adventure

happen in the least expected places.

• Change your mind. Make a plan – then break it. Let the road be your guide!

• Check your destination’s camping regulations - they di�er from country to country. Nobody wants to be eaten by a bear.

• Freedom camp where permitted. It’s one of the greatest bene�ts of carrying your bedroom, shower and toilet with you.

• Pre-book ahead of time the experiences and campsites you don’t want to miss, especially in high season.

• Pack your belongings in soft bags as opposed to bulky suitcases.

• Familiarise yourself with local road rules (American cops carry very big guns).

DON’T• Have a plan – if you have too much of

one, you may miss the magic.

• Underestimate driving distances and times – everything looks smaller on a map.

• Attempt undercover car parks. Open top might be cool in a convertible but your camper might struggle to pull it o�.

• Drive on the beach. Campervans are HEAVY and you will sink like a stone into the sand. Not a good look.

Top tip: Certain routes are more popular than others and if you can travel in the opposite direction, it can often be cheaper. For example, a one-way rental from Auckland to Christchurch is likely to be more expensive than the other way round.

Legendary highways, national parks, surf-strewn coastal roads and tumbleweed deserts dotted with moonshine towns – USA’s landscapes were built for road trips (who hasn’t heard of Route 66?). Tugging at the heartstrings of explorers, this inland Oz tour starts with the architectural wonders of Bendigo. Drink in the history of Rutherglen then tilt your glasses for a wine tasting in Alpine Valley and King Valley. If you’re livin’ it up in a maui camper, why not spend a night amongst these � ne vines and zesty wines? Hang-glide in Tumut, explore the national museums of the capital Canberra, then whizz past a life-size Rambo on the way to Sydney!

SYDNEY TO CAIRNS


With its rugged landscapes and pristine reefs, indigenous culture and cosmopolitan cities, Australia’s East Coast is a backpackers heaven set to ‘wow’ at every twist n’ turn of the wheel. Park up your camper at the Lane Cove River Tourist Park based in the beautiful National Park just north of the city. You can catch a train from here and soak up the sights of Sydney. When ready, hit the road for laid-back Co� s Harbour then ride crashing waves and party the night away in bliss-inducing Byron and Surfers Paradise. After exploring glitzy Brisbane, pass the impressive Glasshouse Mountains before reaching the dreamy surfer town of Noosa. Spot whales as you ferry to Fraser Island for dunes, dingos and freshwater lakes. Park up at the Nomads hostel in Airlie Beach where you can hook it up to the power and use the hostel’s bar, swimming pool and other facilities. NORTH TO SOUTH: AUCKLAND TO CHRISTCHURCH


For those with a bangin’ sense of adventure, this beaut is for you. Combining out-of this-world scenery with optional adrenalin hikes and activities, this is the crème de la crème of all Kiwi adventures. Kick o� with a heart-pounding bungy in Auckland, head underground in Waitomo and throw yourself into the bubbling hot springs and white-knuckle playground of Taupo. Boots laced in Tongariro, cross volcanic terrain on one of New Zealand’s greatest one-day hikes, potter around artsy Wellington and sip a few glasses of world-renowned Sauvignon in Marlborough. Prepare to be blown away by Punakaiki’s famous Pancake Rocks and Blowholes then rock up at NZ’s dramatic glacial spot, Franz Josef. Crank up the roadtrip playlist, wind down the windows and wiggle around this all-singing all–dancing route. Starting from the Garden City of Christchurch, make tracks to Kaikoura to spot whales, swim with dolphins and gawp at adorable fur seals. It’s then on to Blenheim’s vineyards for New World wines. After a lazy morning and a hearty brekkie, hop on the ferry over to Wellington’s picturesque harbour then wind your way to beautiful Martinborough and its many wineries. If maui is your camper of choice, why not park up for a night at maui winery haven? Step back in time for Napier’s 1930s art deco architecture before making tracks to the lunar-style landscapes of Taupo and the geothermal mud pools and spurting geysers of Rotorua. Journey to the real Middle Earth in Hobbiton, watch as hot water bubbles through golden sand at Hot Water Beach then � nish with a bungy jump in Auckland. It would be rude not to!

NORTH ISLAND: COROMANDEL TO THE CAPE


Pack your togs and jandals (or swimmers and sandals) and nip around the North Island. Camper revved, put your foot down for the boutique town of Paihia, the bouncing springboard to the Bay of Islands’ maritime adventure playground. See two oceans collide at Cape Reinga, before returning south past Auckland to explore Coromandel’s natural beauty. Release your inner surfer dude and swim, surf or body board in Raglan then relax in a swimming hole in Ruapuke Motor Camp.

SOUTH ISLAND: NATURE OVERLOAD


As wild as its North Island sister, the South Island is bursting with adventures, activities, pumping nightlife and magni� cent scenery. Spot whales and dolphins o� -shore in Kaikoura, swirl a zesty Sauvignon in Marlborough (no boxed-wine nonsense here) and feast on Kaiteriteri’s seafood before a trip to hikers’ paradise, Abel Tasman.
