Thomas & Betts developed the firsttool-applied solderless terminals andconnectors over 60 years ago inresponse to industry awareness of theneed for better performance of electri-cal systems.
Chamfered/FunneledTerminal Barrel Entry______This feature makes wire insertion fasterand easier. Chamfering eliminates wirestrand "hang up" and departure upon
insertion into the terminal's bar-rel. The loss of even a couple
of wire strands can havenegative results on electri-cal efficiency and resis-tance to mechanical strain.
Deep InternalSerrations_______________
After the insertion of a wire into the ter-minal's barrel, a deep serrated interiorinsures a large area of contact whichlowers the resistance of a connection. With the mechanical force of the tool, the wire strands cold flow into the ser-rated interior. This guarantees electri-cal resistance lower than the wire towhich it is applied. This feature alsoprevents pullout from vibration andmechanical strain. Deep internal serra-tions can be compared to the effectiveholding power of a well treaded tire ona wet highway.
Sta-Kon's* Long BarrelDesign________________If lowering electrical resistance, pre-venting wire pullout, eliminating a"missed" crimp and an insulator thatstays on the barrel during installationare your goals, then you must design a
terminal with a long barrel. Most com-petitive barrel lengths range from 20%-50% shorter than Sta-Kon* terminals. The results are usually a stream ofelectrical failure, rework and addedexpense. This also provides the insula-tor with additional surface area, holdingtight to the barrel. Many competitiveinsulators come off during crimpingdue to a limited barrel length.
Brazed or Overlapped SeamA long barrel design is of little valueunless it is one solid piece. That is whyThomas & Betts brazes the seam onour vinyl insulated Sta-Kon® and over-laps the seam on nylon insulated termi-nals. Many competitive terminals havebutted seams. This means increased
-chances for wirestrand loss, poor resis-tance, wire pullout and electrical fail-ure. If the installer doesn't position the ~tool exactly on the correct spot on thebarrel, there's likely going to be animproper termination. The butted seamcan also fold due to tool-applied pres-sure piercing the terminals insulationfrom the inside out. With a brazed oroverlapped seam the installer can.crimp anywhere along the barrel's sur-face providing up to 2.5 times the ten-sile strength of a butted seam terminal, guaranteeing proper electrical flow, void free.

Why Sta-Kon Terminals Are Better - continuedSelective Annealing
• DeepInternalSerrations
• Flat bottom box• Electro-tin plating• Center reinforced
spring detent forminimum insertionforce
• Compound SpringRails providepositive contactafter repeatedInsertions
Because of the mechanical strength ofcopper, an installer can experiencefatigue associated with repeated instal-lations. For this reason Thomas & Bettsputs our terminals through one morestep called selective annealing. Thisprocess'leaves the barrel soft enoughto crimp and form around the wire. However, we "cold form" the tongueduring the manufacturing process so it
remains strong. This is done so thetongue can withstand repeated
bends and bolt tighteningstrain common in most elec-
trical installations. Manycompetitors attempt toaccomplish similar goalsby removing valuablematerial or using a softer
copper which has lowerconductivity. This increases
electrical resistance as well as theodds for shorting and downtime.
Anti-Rotational TonguesThis is a unique feature to the Thomas& Betts ring tongue terminal. Thisdesign prevents terminal shorting bykeeping the terminal secure in the ter-minal block. The installer can place agreater number of terminals closertogether without worry.
Proper Identification_____We identify all terminals with Thomas &Betts initials, T & B. We also indicatewire and stud sizes. These markingsare clearly visible on the surface of thetongue, taking any guesswork out ofreplacing or reordering additionalparts. Our superior bright plating alsoassists in visibility.
All Sta-Kon* Terminals areDebarred and DegreasedTo insure a Sta-Kon* terminal is proper-ly plated and insulated, all our parts areput through a process which cleansand smooths the terminal of any manu-facturing by-products, mainly grease, oils and sharp edges. Many competitiveproducts do not put their productthrough such rigorous finishing.
Platings/Finish________Electroplated-Tin is standard. All othersrequire minimum order quantities andare generally not stocked. Alternativeplatings as follows: Gold, Silver, Tin-alloys, Nickel, etc.The following finishes are available onmost one-piece Sta-Kon* terminals:

Sta-Kon9 Ring, Fork & Locking Fork
ERG-2001
• Complete line of installing tools engineered to match tool with terminal.• First to gain military approval for pressure connections ... many styles available for
military applications.• Sta-Kon® products exceed test specification requirements of military, U.L. and CSA.• TEFZEL® & Nylon Terminals provided with extra metal sleeve to grip insulation.• Vinyl insulated and bare Sta-Kon® terminals feature brazed seam wire barrels which
can be crimped at any place on the barrel circumference.
Sta-Korf Disconnects________________________• Internal barrel serrations and long barrel provide for maximum tensile strength.• Complete line of installing tools, engineered to match tool with terminal.• Funnel entry insulators allow for easier inserting of wire into barrel.• Color-coded for easy installation.
The Shure Stake" Tools are Matched to Terminals_______The Shure Stake" mechanism prevents the dies from releasing the terminal untilthe proper compression has been completed. With this method, an operatorachieves a reliable crimp everytime. Thomas & Setts' tooling techniques correctlymatch tools, wire size and terminal to produce optimum mechanical and electricalperformance.
