This week in RCIA we will study the Church's teachings on Moral Living and Social Justice. The Church's teachings are beautiful and timely. They help us to better understand the world, live godly lives, and serve the needy. In these modern times, people sometimes think the Church's teachings are old fashioned, but they
are as relevant today as ever, and our culture needs them more now than ever. Once we hear and understand the teachings of the Church, we appreciate their depth and beauty. Our Saint of the Day will be Saint Cyril of Jerusalem, a Doctor of the Church who lived in the 300s A.D. and was instrumental in
battling against the Arian heresy, which denied the divine nature of Jesus.
"RCIA" stands for the Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults. It's the process by which adults come into full communion with the Catholic Church by receiving their Sacraments of Initiation. It's free, childcare is provided, we have a lot of fun and we always have something good to eat. If you have questions, feel free to email me at [email protected].

Hermana Gertrudis Muñoz Mendieta I.C.A.S.

Marco walked timidly into the office of Helping Hands with a secret so big he had to lean over and whisper it to me. "I can't read" he said. It took courage to tell a stranger he is 60 years old and has never been taught to read. What would be their reaction? Derision? Sympathy? Impatience? He lives in the shadows of Midland, circling the periphery of our lives. We never see him or others like him. Because he can't read, he doesn't see those things that we see and take for granted such as street signs, fast food menus, or grocery items. Abandoned by family and with few friends, he struggles in his meager existence by picking up cans and doing yard work, which has been difficult lately because of the bad weather. He lost his job 5 months ago because of newly forming cataracts and wears glasses that he found. Marco has always paid his rent on time in the 15 years he has lived in his apartment, but now he can't gather enough money to pay rent and his electric bill and buy a little food. Someone referred him to Helping Hands and we were happy to help him but we are also concerned about him. Marco did not know he can get help with eye surgery and glasses; food; and transportation. He didn’t know he can file for Food Stamps. He walks everywhere, even across town (doesn't own even a bicycle) to have someone read his bills to him. He has a childlike faith in people and I God whom he says has always provided for him. He humbled me and made me realize how blessed I am. We will be talking to Marco more in the next few weeks to help him with cataract surgery if needed and with much needed glasses right away. He is not alone anymore thanks to the generosity of your donations to Helping Hands and your compassion for people like Marco.
In gratitude, we thank you for being God's Helping Hands.
