A Pastoral Letter.......

Dear Friends,

Most of us have unpleasant associations with the idea of waiting. Perhaps we think oftime spent in a waiting room, or having to stay in for a delivery, or for workmen, orwaiting for a bus or a train which is late, or even that tinge of worry as we wait for afriend or family member who hasn't turned up when we expect them. Waiting usuallyseems to involve wasted time, hanging around when we could be doing somethingbetter.

In the Scriptures, we see another kind of waiting, an excited expectation of God'saction. They may have been expecting a new prophet, the return of Elijah, andultimately the Messiah. All through the Gospels we see people trying to work out howJesus fits into their expectations of God's action. In the nativity stories, we have thepresentation in the Temple, where Simeon and Anna have been waiting for years, knowing that someday they would see God's anointed. At Caesarea Phillippi, Peterreports all the things people are saying about Jesus, that he might be John the Baptistor Elijah, or one of the Prophets, but realises himself that Jesus is the Messiah. Johnthe Baptist himself sends a message “Are you the one who is to come, or are we toexpect another?”

Advent is a much under appreciated season of the Christian year. Sometimes we viewit as an exercise in the first kind of waiting, that is marking time until Christmas. If wemake the most of Advent, though, it can be that second kind, an excited expectation ofGod doing something.

During Advent, a good thing to do amid all the rush is to find some time for creativewaiting on God. Finding some time to set aside for quiet is not wasted time but quitethe opposite. We can find some time of quiet, not filling it with activity, ormultifarious prayers and devotions, nor even feeling bored or silly or guilty, but justspending time waiting on our loving Father, in excited expectation of his coming to usand working in our lives.

Have a fulfilling Advent, in preparation for a happy and blessed Christmas.

Love fromFr Geoff

HYDE PARK LONDON

l would like to speak on behalf of the Organisers of the Service for animals onRemembrance Sunday, the hidden victims of war which took place at the Animals’ WarMemorial, adjacent to Hyde Park London, on the 8th November 2009.

How wonderful it was to meet many people who attended the service on that Sunday, whowere committed and having great enthusiasm to support the Animals’ ministry , peoplefrom all sections of society and coming from all parts of this country. The Celebrant tothe Remembrance Sunday was The Revd James Thompson, The Animals’Padre assisted by Cynthia O’Neil , Doreen Thompson and the final prayers and blessingwere done by myself.

In the Worship both the singing and the order of service were great. When addressing thegathering , the Animals’ Padre apologised on behalf of the Churches’ faults and failuresto speak out on animal issues in our society which has let all the created lives down inhistory. Please pray for something for which there is a sense that got lost somewherealong the way in the Churches mission with this Collect;

“Eternal Father, whose Son Jesus Christ ascended to the throne of heaven that he mightrule over all things as Lord and King:.Keep the Church in the Unity of the Spirit and in the bond of peace, and bring the wholecreated order to worship at his feet; who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of theHolly Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen”.

ST URIEL

In doing our recent Mothers’ Union Quiz we found an ‘unknown’ angel in one of thewindows in the Lady Chapel. He was St Uriel and all we know of him was that he was anArchangel.

Not to be beaten – I have done some research.

Apparently he is one of the seven Archangels of ‘Rabbinic Angelology’ (what awonderful phrase!) The seven are Gabriel, Raphael, Michael, Uriel, Chamuel, Jophiel andZadkiel.

Uriel is not in the Old or the New Testaments – but he is in the Apocrypha in the secondbook of Esdras where he comes with a message from God to Esdras.

Uriel is also mentioned in Milton’s poem - ‘Paradise Lost’. He is called ‘regent of thesun’ and ‘the sharpest sighted spirit in heaven’.

So look out for Uriel!

The 4 girls in our choir have been meeting every Thursday this term, first with the mainchoir for half an hour, then for 30 min with me. They have been learning about musictheory, sight singing, rhythm and pitch, and they have explored what it means to be amember of a choir. Commitment to serve with their voices is the most important thingto reinforce, and on the whole, the girls are committed and reliable, supported by theirvery committed parents.

Recently, they were able to demonstrate this by joining our choir to sing at a wedding atSt Paul’s, Langleybury. They were all very excited about this; Tina even cancelledfootball in order to come!

So far their training has been aiming for the first of the “ribbons” in the RSCM trainingscheme, the light-blue. Anousha Simon is ready to receive this, but the other girls stillhave a little way to go before they can receive theirs, so I was delighted to discover thatthe RSCM have introduced a white ribbon, at “foundation” level. This means that all thegirls have now covered all they need in order to receive their first ribbons.

So, during the 9.30 Sung Eucharist on December 6, Second Sunday in Advent, Anoushawill receive her light-blue ribbon, and Manjula, Rachel and Tina will receive their whiteribbons. This is in recognition of their musical skills, as well as recognising theircommitment to the choir and our church community. They are a real asset to our choirand our church, and I am delighted to have been involved with their choir training sofar. I have been supported by Andy Benoy and Pat Beach along the way, and the girlshave been welcomed by all choir members.

We’re now looking forward to Christmas and lots of lovely carols!

ANOTHER

EVENING OF ENTERTAINMENT !SATURDAY 6TH FEBRUARY 2010

After the enjoyment of our Evening of Entertainment last February we thought itwould be good, once again, to lighten the gloom of those February dark days by asecond round!

Saturday 6th February 2010 is our chosen date as the next weekend will be the startof schools’ half term.

So...... Here is your chance to share your talents once again, bring some food for our“pot luck supper”, and relax and enjoy a good evening..

As before we hope that many people will offer a maximum of 5 minutesentertainment - singing, music, poetry, story, dancing, juggling, magic? - whatevertalents you may have been hiding. It doesn’t have to be a solo performance - groupperformances are welcome.

We will need people to help with setting up/clearing away, buy and sell tickets, bring items for supper, etc.

More details after Christmas - for the moment just get the date into your 2010 diaryas soon as you have it and start choosing and rehearsing your item!.

Bring your friends and neighbours and come to share some relaxing and enjoyabletime together.

CHRISTMAS GREETINGSfrom the Family of St Michael’sto the Family of St Michael’s!

By now you have probably seen the information and sample of a booklet we shallproduce this year for sending Christmas Greetings amongst ourselves. This is asimilar idea to the Big Christmas Card we have signed in the past, giving adonation to charity. (Several people like to do this rather than send individualcards although of course our table for individual cards will be there nearerChristmas.) The main difference from the Big Card is that we plan to put all ourgreetings in a little Sword-size booklet that can

be taken home by each St Michael’s household

be given to housebound members of our congregation to read and put on theirmantelpieces to remind them that they are in our thoughts and prayers

be sent/emailed to people who have moved away or who are abroad atChristmas

All the information and instructions are on the table at the West Door in church. Tosummarise, if you would like to join this initiative:

Take a form from the envelope marked “Blank Forms” and write your greeting.

When you have filled this in, put it in the envelope marked “Completed Forms”with a donation in the box which is on the table (by Sun 6 December please).

If appropriate, complete a Gift Aid envelope.

If you would prefer to email, please do so to [email protected] but alsotake a form and just fill in the bottom part. We plan to have the booklet availableabout 13th December.

I hope all this is clear but do let me know if you have any queries – 01923 229408.Many thanks.

The “Six o'Clock Series”

Starting in January, and using this title, we are planning a series of eveningservices on the third Sunday of each month, with a variety of liturgical andmusical styles, each beginning at 6.00pm and being followed by lightrefreshments.

This will provide a regular evening service on a fixed Sunday in each month, sothat people can put it into their calendars/diaries, and get used to the idea of thethird Sunday being something special in the evening. The third Sunday avoidsthe united services on the first Sunday, and the Sundays where there is an11.15.

It will offer a variety of different worship styles, while maintaining the St Michael'sethos of good liturgy with good music, involving a wide range of musical talent inour choir and congregation.

We are advertising the services as a series, with the aim of enthusing membersof our congregation about evening worship and, we hope, attract others fromoutside our present congregation who may be attracted to these services.

THE YEAR AT ST MICHAEL’S 2008-09

Advent is the start of the church’s year so it is an appropriate time to think about the lasttwelve months. Our thoughts include . . .

These have been unusual months at St Michael’s because we spent ten of them with avacancy. We relied much on Fr George who was very generous of the time that he gaveto take our Eucharist services and to preach at some of them. In addition we were verylucky to have visiting priests and preachers, most especially Canon Michael Carter, RevDavid Tuck, Rev Gary Russell, Rev Jonathan Beach, and Sue Pankhurst. In addition totaking some 9.30 celebrations, the Rev Ian Pankhurst took services for us on MaundyThursday, Good Friday and Holy Saturday when Fr George had to return to Kenya for ashort time. The Archdeacon of St Albans paid us two visits including Easter Day. Wewere very lucky to have these visitors all of them friends returning to our church.

Church members felt that it was important for our church activities to continue during thevacancy and people were very generous to give extra time and effort to make sure thatthis happened. Bible Study, Pause, Intercessory Prayer Group, and Sunday School allcontinued to meet. During Lent we had two special evening services – one arranged bythe Pause Group and the other a Passiontide Meditation with words and music.

There were two new activities during the year – an Evening of Entertainment when weenjoyed hearing our friends singing, reciting, playing instruments, to entertain us. Wealso had the opportunity of using our talents in other ways when we were all given a £1coin and challenged to increase it and bring the proceeds back at Easter. Many were theways in which people thought of increasing the original investment (a total of £100) andfinally a sum in excess of £800 was sent to USPG in the early summer.

January started with a visit from some Drama students from Wesley College, Melbourne,Australia. They entertained some primary schools, and audiences at the Pump House andat church whilst they were staying in Watford.

We used our energy towards fund-raising activities, including the Plant Sale, CoffeeMornings, Iola & Bob’s Quiz Night, and the Christmas Fair and thus reminded the peopleof West Watford that there was still life going on at St Michael’s Church.

As the summer progressed, we knew that our new Priest-in-Charge had been appointedand thoughts were directed towards making him welcome. Most especially we had tokeep the Vicarage garden tidy and redecorate most of the inside. Thanks to hard work bysome members (with the help of our new priest) we were able to have a very respectablevicarage waiting when Fr Geoffrey Calvert moved in at the beginning of September.

The Service of Licensing and Installation had to be planned, Deanery Clergy, friends, members of Fr Geoff’s church in Luton and local people invited. The Service took placeon 30 September in a crowded church. People stayed on afterwards for refreshments andthere was a good feeling of fellowship and excitement for a new beginning.

A VISIT TO SPAINPat and I have just returned from visiting my brother who lives in the small town ofRojales, in Spain, about 40 minutes drive south of Alicante. It was a pleasant break withfew people about being that it is now ‘out of season’ but weather was just to our liking, being in the low 20’s during the day.

Terry showed us around the local area and what impressed me was how the Spanish arenot afraid to show their faith. In Rojales there is a municipal building, rather like a firestation, where they store the floats and tableaus used in their processions at religiousfestivals. We could not go in as a group were being shown round but we could see thesize and decoration of the floats.

Overlooking Rojales is a steep hill with 3 metal crosses at the top. Each year on MaundyThursday evening a large festival takes place in the town. Starting at the church theprocession passes through the town and gradually climbs the hill stopping at each of the14 stations of the cross that are erected on the pathway to the top of the hill. Many peopletake part or watch and at the end there is a firework display.

Evidently many towns and villages have a patron saint and when the Saint’s Day arrivesthere is a great festival in the area with many of the local people having a day off work.

In Torrevieja, a 20 min drive, we visited a new churchwhich was consecrated back in April. It was light andairy and seemed to be well used by the local people. One thing which amused us was an electric votive standwith artificial candles, one of which lit up when you put20 cents in the slot (health & safety regulations ?).

In the square outsidean older church inTorrevieja a largearea was screened offwhere the Nativity Scene was being prepared. Not onlythe manger, but other famous buildings and localfeatures were all being incorporated in the display.During Advent various events are organised in thesquare, with even the ex-pat British carol singing there.

Is it time that Christians in Britain make themselvesmore visible in the community because some people in

authority have been trying to restrict Christian festivals on the pretext that it might offendother religions? Some councils want to rename Christmas ‘Winter Festival’ while thisyear Dundee called its lights switch-on ‘winter light night’. The Bishop of Lichfield andthe Bishop of Chichester have suggested Christians wear religious symbols such as across or fish.
