No matter which direction the beast walks, one end is the “push me” and the other is the “pull you.” Today’s feast is a bit like that in the life of the church. In the book of the Acts of the Apostles, it is the ascension of Christ that calls for the Holy Spirit, which consequently sends or “pushes” the church out on its mission. This is the message that we hear from the angels today as they tell the friends of Jesus not to look up into the clouds, but to get busy. It is the message of Jesus himself in Matthew’s Gospel, as he sends them out to baptize. He also tells them, “I am with you always, until the end of the age” (Matthew 28:20). And it is this message, confident in faith that Jesus has ascended to shouts of joy, that “pulls” us along to our final destiny. The life of the faithful disciple, sent into the world on mission, will one day know the same risen, ascended glory. Jesus tells the disciples that they will be witnesses to the ends of the earth (Acts 1:1-11). God mounts his throne to shouts of joy: a blare of trumpets for the Lord (Psalm 47). May the Father of glory give you a Spirit of wisdom and revelation (Ephesians 1:17-23). Jesus instructs the Eleven to baptize and teach people of all nations (Matthew 28:16-20).

My Jesus, I believe that You are present in the Most Holy Sacrament. I love you above all things, and I desire to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace You as if You were already there and unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be separated from You. Amen.

Congratulations to graduating high school senior Chekube Chukwuma, who has been selected by the diocese as the Saint Timothy Award recipient at Saint Matthew Church. The award, sponsored by The National Federation for Catholic Youth Ministry, recognizes role models in youth ministry who live as disciples of Christ, witness their faith by exhibiting Catholic morals and integrity, demonstrate gospel values by their service to others, and exhibit Christian leadership in their parish, school and community.

Way to go, Chekube, Class of 2020...we are so proud of you!

Memorare ("Remember, O Most Gracious Virgin Mary")

Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known that anyone who fled to your protec-tion, implored your help, or sought your intercession, was left unaided. Inspired by this confidence, I fly unto you, O Virgin of virgins, my Mother. To you do I come, before you I stand, sinful and sorrowful. O Mother of the Word Incarnate, despise not my petitions, but in your mercy, hear and answer me. Amen.

My Fellow Parishioners,

This has been a difficult time for all of us dealing with the Covid-19 virus and its ramifications. Many of us are anxious about the future. I am sending this message to you to help prepare us for the anticipated return to Masses at St. Matthew. As of May 18th, the MCB will be opened for private prayer and visits. On Monday, May 25th, the normal weekday Mass will resume for attendance by our parishioners and on May 30, our normal Sunday Mass schedule will resume. There will be many changes when we come back to the celebration of Mass. Our Mass schedule will remain the same for the time being. Seating will be very limited in order to comply with social distancing requirements. We will receive the Eucharist by the sacred host alone. The Eucharist will be offered on the hand only. We will pray the Our Father without joining hands. We will nod to one another during the Sign of Peace. These are just some of the ways in which we will encounter a different Church as we open the doors of the MCB again, and they may also be modified further as future phases of “Re-opening” occur as the pandemic continues to evolve. Remembering the words of St. Paul, “we are many parts, but one body”. No matter how far apart, we remain one body in the Lord.

When we return to public worship we will need to respect the restrictions and guidelines that the governmental and health professionals have provided. Choices will need to be made on the part of each individual. To begin, the obliga on to a end Mass on Sunday is li ed un l further no-

ce. Although each of us must decide what is best for our own personal condition, I strongly encour-age anyone who is in any type of high-risk, or compromised, health condi on to stay at home and watch the celebra on of the Mass on TV. (Every Sunday morning the Diocese of Palm Beach airs its Tele-vised Catholic Mass from 10:30 A.M. – 11:00 A.M. on the CW channel 34 (WTVX), on the diocese Facebook page, and on the diocese website. To learn more, please visit https://www.diocesepb.org/tv-mass or www.diocesepb.org/2020-masses).

I also want to point out that we are in need of volunteers to assist in manning the entry, exits, and cleaning after Mass. If you are willing to assist, please call the Parish Office (966-8878) and leave a message with your name, phone number, & e-mail address, stating you would like to volunteer for Mass(es). On the reverse side of this letter I will outline specific guidelines that we are asking each parishioner to follow when attending Mass, but I would also like to highlight some of the changes you will encounter when attending Mass in the MCB.

• Sea ng will be limited and will be set up for proper social distancing. The Parish Center will serve as an overflow area. Once capacity is reached, we will be required to limit entrance. • Entrance to the MCB will be limited to only the main rear doors (stained glass doors). All other doors will be secured from the inside and will only be for exi ng the MCB a er Mass. • Masks will be required for entry and con nual use during Mass for all parishioners. • Mandatory hand sani zing will also be provided by volunteers upon entering the MCB. • No Missale es will be available. Mobile phone apps like “New Missal” or “Magnificat” may be useful and can be u lized during Mass, if your phone is silenced. • Dismissal a er Mass will be by row, as announced by the Celebrant. • Changes to these guidelines will be posted on the Parish website (h p://st-ma hew-church.com/). Under the “Announcements Tab” click on “Current Events” for all current updates.

GUIDELINES FOR MASS IN THE MCB I ask for your cooperation and understanding in observing the following instructions and guidelines to ensure the health and well-being of all the faithful who participate in the celebration of Mass at St. Matthew Parish during this continuing Pandemic.

• • Seating will be limited and chairs will be set up for proper social distancing. (This is approximately 300 seats per Mass) • • The ONLY entrance to the MCB will be the main rear doors (stained glass doors). Drop-off and pick-up after Mass will be allowed, but absolutely no parking will be permitted on the road in front of the entrance at any time. • • Entrance will be limited to the number of people that can be properly seated according to local regula-tions. Overflow will then be directed to the Parish Center, where sound and/or video will be available, but unfortunately there is no guarantee there will be adequate seating for everyone desiring to attend each Mass. • • Please enter the MCB only when all members of your party are present to assist with seating (no “reserved” seating). • • Volunteers will greet you at the door to ensure masks are being worn, and hands will be sanitized in-side the MCB. Masks are to be worn at all times. • • Please try to limit use of the public restrooms before and during Mass. • • A large collection basket will be located at the entrance of the MCB for your donations/envelopes, as no collections will be taken during Mass. • • Volunteers will direct you to the appropriate seating. The Right side of the MCB will be for SINGLE seat-ing; Left side will be for FAMILIAL COUPLES & FAMILY GROUPS. Please do not move any chairs from their lo-cations. Families larger than four people may need to break up and sit separately. Cry Rooms will not be available at any Masses. • • Please leave the reserved seats in the right front empty for Eucharistic Ministers. • • Once seated, please remain seated and avoid personal socializing while in the MCB building. • • Votive candles and Holy Water will not be available at the current time. • • The Our Father will be prayed without joining hands. • • You may nod or wave to one another during the Sign of Peace. No hand shaking or elbow “bumping”. • • Wine will not be offered at the Eucharist. Eucharistic Ministers will come to individual seats to give out Communion. There is no need to leave your seat. The communion host will only be given in the hand (no re-ception on the tongue). If you desire to receive Communion, please stand (if possible) as the Eucharistic Minister approaches. • • Dismissal will be controlled by the Celebrant by row(s). Exiting the MCB can be by any door EXCEPT the Main Entrance Door. We ask that everyone remains until after the final blessing at the end of Mass, and that no one leaves during/after Communion. This will prevent confusion and interfering with the Eucharistic Min-isters who are moving around to give Communion. Volunteers will ensure the doors are open at the end of Mass to avoid individuals touching the door handles. The threat of the Covid-19 virus is still very much with us. Hopefully these measures will help miti-gate this threat as we attempt a gradual phased return to normalcy in our Parish.

God bless,

Rev. Clem Hammerschmitt

Pastor

Grace Each Day God of every age and place, during this time when the patterns of everyday life have been superseded by drastic measures and emergency directives, give us the grace to live each day as fully as possible. Give us patience when we grow restless. Give us determination to focus not on short-term inconveniences, but on everyday actions that contribute to the long-term good of all. We pray through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Prayer of the Faithful

Sent out into the world by Jesus Christ, let us pray now for the needs of all the people in the world.

For Pope Francis, Bishop Barbarito, Father Clem, Father Leonard and all religious whose example leads us to throw open the doors of the Church to all people, let us pray to the Lord.

For an end to violence in the world and on our streets and in our homes, as we continue to learn that violent actions only lead to more violence, let us pray to the Lord.

For doctors and scientists, may their work to protect us and heal us during this pandemic be heeded and blessed, let us pray to the Lord.

For those who work in ministries of reconciliation and healing as they bring wholeness to those who experience alienation, anger, and loneliness, let us pray to the Lord.

For all who graduate this unusual spring as they celebrate their accomplishments and prepare for a new phase of work, service, or scholarship in their lives, let us pray to the Lord.

For all those who are sick, for all who suffer from COVID-19, and for all who have died, especially Father Joseph Santa-Bibiana, let us pray to the Lord.

For all the prayers that we hold in the silence of our hearts; for all our intentions spoken and unspoken, let us pray to the Lord.

O God of all, your risen Son commissioned us to go out to the world in his name. Hear these our humble prayers which we make on behalf of this world, and grant them through him, who is our Lord for ever and ever.
