PASTOR’S MESSAGE As we celebrate the 300th anniversary of the founding of the City of San Anto-nio, these excerpts from the article “History of the Archdiocese of San Antonio” taken from the Archdiocese of San Antonio 2017-2018 Official Directory, help shed light on the history of our Archdiocese. “Before Bexar County existed, the Catholic Church was present. Father Damian Massanet accompanied the first expedition to come to the shores of a stream, which he called San Antonio because it occurred on the feast of St. Anthony. Later, a combination of church and state founded the missions that brought civilization to the native population. The parish church of Villa de San Fernando assumed the ministry to these people. San Antonio and South Texas were under the jurisdiction of a series of dioceses: Mexico City, Guadalaja-ra, Durango, Linares and Monterrey.” The history continues with French priest, Father Jean Marie Odin becoming the first bishop of Texas at Galveston. He was followed by Bishop Claude Marie Dubuis. The original Diocese went from the Gulf of Mexico to the Panhandle! San Antonio became the second diocese in Texas in 1874 with Bishop Anthony Pellicer in charge. Next came Bishop Jean Nerez who had the fame of selling the Alamo to the State of Texas for $20,000! After him, Father John Anthony Forest succeeded Bishop Neraz. After 15 years, Fa-ther William Shaw of Mobile was appointed coadjutor bishop with the right of succession. After him came Father Arthur Drossaerts from Baton Rouge, Louisiana. “In 1927, he became the first Archbishop of San Antonio.” Next came Archbishops that many of you will recall: Archbishop Robert E. Lucey, Archbishop Francis J. Furey and Archbishop Patricio F. Flores who was the first Mexican American bishop named in the United States. He was followed by Archbishop José H. Gomez, who is now the Arch-bishop of the largest archdiocese in our country, Los Angeles. Archbishop Gomez was succeeded by Chi-cago Auxiliary Bishop Gustavo Garcia-Siller, M.Sp.S. on October 14, 2010, our current Archbishop. What began as a small band of Catholics has grown into more than 770,000 Catholics in our Archdiocese which includes the following counties: Val Verde, Edwards, Kinney, Real, Uvalde, Gillespie, Kerr, Bandera, Medi-na, Frio, Kendall, Comal, Bexar, Atascosa, McMullen, Guadalupe, Wilson, Gonzales and Karnes. Our Archdiocese oversees half of the dioceses in Texas including: Laredo, El Paso, San Angelo, Lubbock, Am-arillo, Ft. Worth and Dallas. The other dioceses – Brownsville, Corpus Christi, Victoria, Austin, Beaumont and Tyler are under the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston. - -Fr. Dennis

WELCOME SCOTT SOWELL Scott and Diane met while on active duty in the US Air Force, and have been married over 31 years. They have lived in San Antonio the past 21 years, and have four children, Eric, Sarah, Hannah, and Sean. Eric and his wife, Stormi, live in the San Antonio area, and are parents to a nearly 4 year old daugh-ter. Hannah and her husband, Michael Piscitelli, also currently reside in San Antonio, and are parents to a 1 1/2 year old son. Sarah lives and works in New Orleans, and Sean currently lives and skis in Denver, Colorado. Scott is the oldest of four siblings and was born and raised in Cincinnati, Ohio where he attended St Bartholomew grade school, graduated from St Xavier High School, and went on to become a member of the Fighting Irish! Upon graduation from the University of Notre Dame, Scott served 20 years in the US Air Force, 18 of which were spent flying fighter aircraft or teaching others to do so. After retiring from the US Air Force Scott has taught high school math and coached the Varsity Soccer Team at Holy Cross HS, taught academics to Royal Saudi Air Force F-15 pilots in Saudi Arabia, and is currently an Aviation Safety Official for the Boeing Company at Kelly Field. During his adult life, Scott has served as a lector, an Extraordi-nary Minister of Holy Communion, an adult acolyte, a member of the Knights of Columbus, and helped reinvig-orate the Holy Name Society at St Mary's, downtown San Antonio, prior to discerning the call to the Permanent Diaconate. Diane, the oldest of her siblings, was born in Washington, DC, and grew up all along the eastern coast of the US. After attending the University of Georgia and graduating from Georgia State University, Diane was the Di-rector of a wilderness challenge program which provided intervention for at-risk youth. Upon entering the US Air Force on Active Duty, Diane served as a Weapons Controller with units located in Florida, Oklahoma, and Germany, completed the USAF Survival School Training, and earned flights in the backseat of an USAF T-33 and F-15. Both Scott and Diane have Masters Degrees from Midwestern State University in Wichita Falls, Tex-as. Diane has been involved with music ministry most of her life, has served as a lector and Extraordinary Min-ister of Holy Communion, has taught First Communion classes, and was the choir director and cantor at St Mary's, downtown San Antonio, the past 15-20 years. She was also a long time member of St Mary's Altar So-ciety. Scott and Diane have also taught RCIA together, and been involved with the St Mary's Prayer Group since its inception. Scott and Diane are members of the Catholic Charismatic Renewal and serve in healing ministry. Scott and Diane are truly appreciative of the warm welcome they have received from the St Matthew Parish family, and look forward to meeting more of you and serving with you as part of the St Matthew community.

CALLED BY GOD Today’s scriptures invite us to listen to two calls. The first is the call issued by the LORD to the prophet Amos, the “shepherd and a dresser of sycamores” (Amos 7:14). The sec-ond is the call the Lord Jesus issued to the Twelve, whom he sent out “two by two” (Mark 6:7). These faithful people responded to the call, prophesying and preaching to the people to whom they had been sent. Each of us re-ceived a call when we were baptized. The second reading invites us to ponder that call as we are reminded that we are chosen in Christ and that, in love, God “destined us for adoption” (Ephesians 1:5). As adopted daughters and sons of God we are called to bring the presence of Christ into our marriag-es, families, schools, and places of work. Let us be inspired today to say yes to the call we hear once again through God’s living word. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION At the time of the Reformation, although England broke away from papal authority under Henry VIII, a silent majority clung to the Catholic faith. Henry’s eldest daughter, Mary, restored the “old religion” in a fierce persecution of Protestants (she is called “Bloody Mary” for good reason.) His youngest daughter, Elizabeth, rejected papal ties. Under her reign, beginning with legislation in 1593, Catholics were persecut-ed again, and only the very wealthy could afford the fines for not attending Anglican services on Sunday. They were called “recusants,” from a Latin word meaning “refuse,” since they refused to attend the liturgy of the Church of England. Many families maintained Catholic tradition in secret, and today their descend-ants claim “Recusancy” as a mark of family pride. For generations they sent their young people abroad to be educated in convents and monasteries. It is not surprising that the first monastery in colonial America springs from Holland with the daughters of patrician English recusant families. Port Tobacco, Maryland, proved fruitful soil for the Carmelite tradition. —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch,Co
