On the weekend of Nov. 23/24 we will be taking up a special collection

in support of the Catholic Campaign for Human Development.

The Catholic Campaign for Human Development is the domestic anti-poverty program of the U.S. Catholic Bishops, working to car-ry out the mission of Jesus Christ "... to bring good news to the poor ... release to captives ... sight to the blind, and let the op-pressed go free." (Luke 4:18) The belief that those who are directly affected by unjust systems and structures have the best insight into knowing how to change them is central to CCHD. CCHD works to break the cycle of pov-erty by helping low-income people participate in decisions that af-fect their lives, families and communities. CCHD offers a hand up, not a hand out.

Change of Heart: Justice, Mercy, and Making Peace with My Sister’s Killer

Monday, Nov. 18th @ 7:00 pm, Upper Room

PRESENTER: Jeanne Bishop Jeanne Bishop is the sister of Nancy Bishop Langert, who was shot to death at age 25 along with her husband and their unborn child. Jeanne will share her journey of grief, anger and redemption; not only for her-self but for the person who murdered her family members. She pub-lished her story in the book, “Change of Heart: Justice, Mercy, and Making Peace with My Sister’s Killer.” Since the murders of her family members, Jeanne Bishop has been a prominent advocate for gun violence prevention, abolition of the death penalty, exoneration of the innocent and often speaks about the role of faith in the debate over executions. Jeanne is a member of Murder Victim Families for Human Rights.

This presentation is in conjunction with our parish social mission week theme, “Jesus Remember Me: Called to the Kingdom of Mercy.” On the weekend of November 23/24 parishioners will be invited to sign postcards urging the Trump Administration against resuming execution of federal death penalty inmates. It has been almost 20 years since a federal inmate has been executed.

Jesus Remember Me: Called to the Kingdom of Mercy

Parish Social Mission Week: Nov. 18—24

Determined to end the death penalty worldwide Our November 23/24 parish social mission weekend takes the theme, “Jesus Remember Me: Called to the Kingdom of Mercy.” It is inspired by the story of Je-sus’ execution and the mercy he showed to the crimi-nal executed with him. This show of mercy is one of the characteristics that exemplify the Kingly nature of Jesus. For this reason we will be advocating for an end to the federal death penalty. (The death penalty has al-ready ended in Illinois.) Recently the Church’s teaching on the death penalty has changed. In the past, the Catechism of the Catholic Church stated if “non-lethal means are sufficient to defend and protect people's safety from the aggressor, au-thority will limit itself to such means.” It went on to say, “the cases in which the execution of the offender is an absolute necessity are very rare, if not practical-ly nonexistent.” Recently Pope Francis approved a new revision of the Catechism of the Catholic Church which reads: 2267. Recourse to the death penalty on the part of legitimate authority, following a fair trial, was long considered an appropriate response to the gravity of certain crimes and an acceptable, albeit extreme, means of safeguarding the common good. Today, however, there is an increasing awareness that the dignity of the person is not lost even after the commission of very serious crimes. In addition, a new understanding has emerged of the significance of penal sanctions imposed by the state. Lastly, more effective systems of detention have been developed, which ensure the due protection of citizens but, at the same time, do not definitively deprive the guilty of the possibility of redemption. Consequently, the Church teaches, in the light of the Gospel, that “the death penalty is inadmissible be-

cause it is an attack on the inviolability and dignity of the person”, and she works with determination for its abolition worldwide.” While an increasing number of states have ended the death penalty, in July the Department of Justice an-nounced it will resume executions at the federal level for the first time in nearly 20 years. The 5 federal executions scheduled for December 2019 and Janu-ary 2020 are still being actively litigated. In their pastoral letter on criminal justice our bishops remind us, “We will not tolerate the crime and vio-lence that threatens the lives and dignity of our sis-ters and brothers and we will not give up on those who have lost their way. We seek both justice and mercy.” After all Masses on the weekend of November 23/24 we are inviting parishioners follow Jesus’ example of mercy by adding their voices to those of the U.S. Catholic Conference of Bishops’ in urging the administration to halt its plans to end the moratorium on executions.

God’s Word To Us

Reflection on Lectionary Readings 33rd Sunday in Ordinary Time, November 17, 2019

Sign, Sign – Everywhere a Sign…

Look, I am like many others – when I don’t know if something will turn out as I prefer, if I have no control over situations ~~ I look for a sign. I guess, that is a reason so many of us read daily horoscopes to gather some sign of how our day, or month, or year might turn out. “Give me a sign, Lord” we yell to the heavens. The only thing we can be sure in life is the unexpected. We don’t know where we will be led, where we are headed. But we can be prepared; we can expect that things will happen out of our control and we just need to learn how to adjust. There is an old adage: “you can’t control the wind, but you can adjust your sails.” We can’t know the unexpected, but we can be ready to learn how to adjust to what live throws at us. We need to adjust to the storms of life, and to be prepared (as any good Scout would tell you). In Luke’s Gospel today Jesus tells us, ‘expect the unexpected.’ Don’t look for signs, cause you might misread them or misunder-stand them. Signs, signs, everywhere a sign – but there is only one sign that is most important – the Sign of our Cross. All other signs deceive us, as Christ notes today. In our parish mission directive we are called to answer the plea of those who need our help. That’s the sign to focus on. Find Christ in others. Listen to the cries of the poor and say “your servant is listening.” Ask what must be done, and do it. Do whatever is asked that will make the world better for others. We live on this earth, as the psalmist wrote, 70 -80 years if we are strong. So, fo-cus on the needs of others, and come to serve. And then, when the day is over if you must, read your horoscope. Deacon Joe Ferrari

Can Prayer be as simple as engaging our memory? For St. Ignatius, it is not only that simple, but remembering is essential for meeting God in the details of our life’s journey. God comes to us disguised as our very life, and the act of prayerful remembering not only recasts our own story within the context of God’s love and care, it can create a future full of purpose and hope. Please join us, This retreat will be repeated for men March 13-15, 2020

God loves things by becoming them. This is the Christmas miracle, and this is what we Christians call incarnation. It began 13.8 billion years ago with a singularity and massive explosion we refer to as the Big Bang. It reached a complete expression 2,000 years ago when God fully became human in the person of Jesus. Today, God continues to become what God loves, and that includes you as part of the Christmas miracle.

Join us for three weeks this Advent for a prayer experience that will take us deep into the Christmas miracle of incarnation as it links the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius with the theology of Pierre Teilhard de Chardin. This experience will include three evenings of teaching and faith sharing, a daily

prayer practice and two meetings with a spiritual director.

For those wishing to participate in Spiritual Direction the fee is $75.00.

For those attending the Monday night sessions only, the fee is $50.00

Checks can be made out to St. Margaret Mary.

Fr. Paul’s Homily

Finding God in Liminal Areas 2 Mc 7:1-2, 9-14; 2 Thes 2:16—3:5; Lk 20:27-38

(If we want to meet God, we have to get out of our heads and away from our minds into our hearts and affections.)

11

“For to him all are alive.”

As the trees lose their leaves and we dig up our garden plants for the winter, the Church’s liturgy turns to the issues of the end of life and beyond. There have always been people who object to the very idea of any beyond. Here the Sadducees, a class of priests in the Jewish religion, did not believe in the resurrection. Their argument is purely logical, which is the whole problem. We all tend to think from the basis of what we know. But Jesus is trying to warn them and us that the reality of the age to come isn’t like the present age at all. It operates on entirely different principles.

And I think we can sympathize with the Sadducees. We too want to deal with God through our heads, but as Jesus teaches very clearly, that actually pushes God away. God is light, but the light that is God is best perceived in obscurity, as in the early dawn or the late dusk when what was,

is passing away and what will be, is starting. We are always in the dawn and the dusk of some part of our lives, and the light is always there in obscurity. Jesus always taught the borders and boundaries of life are where we go to experience God. The saints have always found God in the marginalized and peripheral people of this earth, which they have found to be doors to the sacred.

Now for a moment, back to our heads. The human mind is marvelous, but what’s it for? The mind is to help us gain control, which we need to some degree, of our lives and of our earth. However, God is utterly beyond our control. And so if we want to meet God, we have to get out of our heads and away from our minds into our hearts and affections.

An example is the Eucharist itself. Jesus gave us the Eucharist to sustain and support us, to help us in our suffering by uniting our

suffering and pain to his, and to help us build communion within our community and beyond. It is an ever dynamic gift that transforms us with divine energy, when we let it. But too often we are tempted to think of the Eucharist as a static thing, maybe even some thing in the tabernacle or on the altar, but we forget it is food that is transforming us from within. And when we reduce the Eucharist to a thing that we try to understand through abstract concepts, then we come and say, “Well, I don’t get much out of Mass.” Well, no wonder! We are living in our heads then just like the Sadducees in today’s story, and thus we miss the story of life. The Eucharist connects with all the liminal areas where we are dying and rising, where what was, is passing away and what will be, is beginning. St. Bonaventure advises: “Seek the bridegroom, not the teacher.”
