Mary
By: Susan BaroneRoberta Robinson
The Blessed Virgin Mary
Mother of our Lord
Susan Barone and Roberta Robinson
December 2019
The Blessed Virgin Mary
Four Marian Dogmas:
• Mary, Mother of God
• Immaculate Conception
• Perpetual Virginity
• Assumption of Mary
Madonna del Granduca – Raphael 1505
The Blessed Virgin Mary
Dogma vs. Doctrine?
Doctrine – refers to all forms of Church
teaching
Dogma – Divinely revealed, infallible
statements of truth.
Issued by the Pope or a Council.
All Dogmas are doctrine, but not all doctrines are
dogma. (CCC 88-89)
Statue of Mary at the Church of St. Anne, Jerusalem
The First Dogma: Mother of God
Defined at Ephesus in 431
• Mary is the Mother of Jesus,
the Son of God, not just
His human nature.
• Jesus’ human and divine
natures: True God and
True man
• References Gal 4:4, CCC 509
The Annunciation Statue of Mary & Elizabeth at the
Church of the Visitation, Jerusalem
Dogma of The Immaculate Conception
• Mary was conceived without Original
Sin. Immaculate = without stain
• Immaculate Conception vs. Virgin Birth
• Early References:
St. Ephrem of Syria – 4th Century
St. Augustine – 5th Century
St. Anne & St. Joachim with Mary
Dogma of The Immaculate Conception
“The most Blessed Virgin Mary,
in the first instant of her
conception……was preserved
from all stain of Original Sin.”
(from Ineffabilis Deus)
Defined by Pope Pius IX in 1854:
Basilica of the National Shrine of the
Immaculate Conception
Washington DC
Feast Day of the
Immaculate Conception
December 8
Fun fact: 2020 is the 100th
anniversary - start of
construction of the Basilica
Dogma of Perpetual Virginity
Presentation of the Virgin in the Temple
--fresco by Giotto in Padua, Italy (c. 1305)
• St. Anne, Mary’s mother,
dedicated Mary to service
of the temple.
• Vow of virginity and St. Joseph
• Biblical reference: Ezekiel 44:2
Dogma of Perpetual Virginity
- as affirmed by the Lateran Council, 649
• Mary was a virgin before, during and after the birth
of Jesus, and for the rest of her life.
Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary
Pope Pius XII – 1950
…“Mary was taken up body
and soul into Heavenly glory,
and exalted by the Lord as
Queen over all things”…
Munificentissimus Deus

Prayer for the Feast of the Immaculate Conception
O God, who by the Immaculate Conception of
the Blessed Virgin Mary, prepared a worthy
dwelling for your Son, grant, we pray, that as
you preserved her from every stain by virtue of
the death of your Son, which you foresaw, so,
through her intercession, we, too, may be
cleansed and admitted to your presence.
Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you in the unity of
the Holy Spirit, One God, for ever and ever.
Amen.
Thank You!
Our Lady of Perpetual Help
