This Tuesday evening I invite you to our Social Hall for a presentation of pictures and stories from our recent pilgrimage to Poland. The presentation will begin at 7 PM. Refreshments will be provided. I would like to express my gratitude to all of you who made this years picnic such a great success. There were 409 registered participants which includes 101 children that attended the picnic. The raffle raised $510 and we received $192 in donations toward the picnic. I really enjoyed the fact that the picnic started with the outdoor mass and many of you stayed afterwards to enjoy the fellowship and the tasty food. I’m happy that the newly installed air conditioning unit in our Social Hall kept us all nice and cool. The damaged unit has been re-placed and we have received $14,100 for the installation of the new unit from the Archdiocesan insurance. As you come to church this weekend you will also notice the new security cameras that have been installed this week. The money used to install them came from the Archdiocesan insurance as well. Security is an important aspect of our lives these days. I’m happy that we were able to increase it here at St. John’s. This Sunday, August 14th I invite the youth of our parish (high school and up) for 6 PM mass here at St. John’s followed by a cookout. With a few young adults from St. John that came with me to Poland we will be able to share our experiences of the World Youth Day. On Tuesday, August 23rd at 7 PM I invite those interested in joining me on the Pilgrimage to Europe next summer. Next year we celebrate the 100th Anniversary of Our Lady of Fatima. You may reach out to me if you have any questions. Fr. Karol

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Long ago, a signet ring was an essential part of the wardrobe of influential people. A letter or docu-ment would be sealed with hot wax, and a signet ring pressed into the wax would affirm the origin of the document. In the case of the pope, at least from the thirteenth century, the ring was used to seal public documents with hot lead, saving the red wax for private letters. The public documents were called bullae after the Latin name for the lead stamp, and we still call them “papal bulls.” It is not surprising, therefore, that a signet ring has long been bestowed as part of the inauguration of a pope. The ring is called the Pescatorio, or “Ring of the Fisherman.” It reminds the wearer of his link with Peter, and his responsibility to continue the apostolic ministry of “fishing for human beings.” Until 1842 it actually functioned as a signet ring. Now, each pope receives a new gold ring at the beginning of his min-istry. It goes on the fourth finger of his right hand and bears some fisherman design, usually St. Peter cast-ing nets from a boat, as well as the pope’s name in Latin. A custom that endures for the pope, but not so much for bishops, is for people being introduced to him to kiss the Pescatorio as a sign of respect for his teaching authority. Another enduring custom is for the ring to be smashed and defaced at the pope’s death, originally a way of preventing counterfeit deathbed documents. —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
