Welcome to St George’s…

O n 18 October 1986 we held our first public evening concert. 30 years on, we’re going from strength to strength, promoting a wider range

of music and spoken word events than ever before. Given that 30 is now the new 21, we’ve invited the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment back for a special birthday celebration — and audiences can get into the party swing by voting for the encore!

The OAE encapsulates all that is great about St George’s: a world leading, ground breaking orchestra whose players have built up close bonds with Bristol audiences. It sets the pace and the bar in terms of exhilarating performances, handing over the baton to countless world-class soloists and groups who follow suit with concerts that make audiences catch their breath and bring them to the edge of their seats. This season is as eclectic as ever, crossing continents and centuries to bring you inventive, perfectly formed offerings of jazz, folk, world and contemporary classical. We’re big on fusions of words and music too, with music-edged plays that reveal the hidden worlds of Satie, Rachmaninov and the passions simmering beneath Tolstoy’s Kreutzer Sonata.

Music that has laid undiscovered for hundreds of years comes up for air alongside the latest compositions by young composers from around the South West and two special premieres of Art of Flight commissions by Graham Fitkin and Liz Lane. We’re Puttin’ on the Ritz with the Pasadena Roof Orchestra and going Back to the Roots with a new folk series before winding our way towards the year-end with an uplifting trail of festive fiestas.

Running alongside the music is our capital project ‘Building a Sound Future’. By the time you read this, spades will be in the ground and the foundations of the new extension in place to transform your experience of St George’s. We still need support to reach our fundraising target, so if

BACK TO THE ROOTSOur new series looks at the past, present and future of folk music, taking the opportunity of a 50th anniversary memorial concert for Clifton’s legendary Troubadour club to shine a light on what has always been a very important part of St George’s programme. As well as the local favourites and surprise guests of the Troubador show, there are dates for new folk troubadour Sam Lee, Irish singer Heidi Talbot and her all-star band, rising stars Megson, the duo of writer George Monbiot and singer Ewan McLennan, plus the return of punk-folkers Lynched and an intimate solo show by the daddy of them all, Loudon Wainwright III.

THE ART OF FLIGHTOur celebration of fugue and flight continues this season with must-see concerts by Brodsky Quartet (p.6), Exultate Singers (p.8) and a whole weekend of music and special events in November (p.16/17), including world premieres of specially commissioned music. The English National Baroque Ensemble features players from BBC NOW, The London Philharmonic, BBC Symphony and English Chamber Orchestra. YOUNG COMPOSERS' ACADEMY SHOWCASE CONCERT

Bristol Ensemble

This is the first concert from the Young Composers’ Academy, a joint venture between St George’s and New Music in the South West (NMSW), providing composers aged 16 to 19 with a programme of workshops, individual tuition, composer master classes and commissions. The event begins with a full day’s composition workshop with members of the Bristol Ensemble. This gives the young composers the opportunity to rehearse their pieces under the guidance of professional composers before being performed at a public concert in the evening. This promises to be a genuinely exciting and inspiring occasion.

Recent classics and special commissions take us on a dramatic journey from forbidding, shadowy darkness to joyous, uplifting light! Devised and promoted by NMSW, and expertly performed by Kokoro, the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra's brilliant contemporary music ensemble.

Audience members are also invited to join an informal ‘meet the composers’ session in the crypt.

RICHARD BOOTHBY ‘TELEMANN’S FANTASIES’

It’s not often that 12 works previously unknown by a major composer just turn up. Yet that is precisely what has happened with these solo Fantasies by Telemann. He wrote and published sets of 12 sonatas for solo violin, flute, harpsichord and viola da gamba, issued in monthly format, as was usual at the time. Those for violin, flute and harpsichord all survive in several copies, but those for the viol were thought lost. In 2014 these extraordinarily precious works were rediscovered and tonight virtuoso viol player Richard Boothby gives one of the first performances of the complete set.

Our ‘Art of Flight’ series continues with a visit from the charismatic Brodsky Quartet, performing a heady selection of some of the greatest fugal works, arranged for string quartet. Featuring full performances of Beethoven’s Kreutzer Violin Sonata and Janácek’s String Quartet of the same name, the show explores the love triangle between three great works and asks if music really can drive a man to murder.

A concert celebrating Steve Reich’s 80th birthday and his remarkable contribution to contemporary classical music. He is one of a handful of composers who can legitimately claim to have altered the direction of musical history. The minimalist works Different Trains and City Life (performed tonight with visuals) both use amplification alongside samplers and recordings of speech fragments, while Clapping Music has become one of his most famous and accessible works.

Holst The Perfect Fool: Ballet Music Rachmaninov Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini Bartók Concerto for Orchestra

Bartók’s Concerto for Orchestra is one of his best-known and most popular works. Written in 1943, the title of Concerto for what is essentially a symphonic work relates to the fact that each section in the orchestra is given a solo spot based on a theme derived from East European folk music. The true concerto in the programme is Rachmaninov’s ever-popular Paganini Variations. Heralded for performances of ‘spectacular musicianship and technical brilliance’ (The Scotsman), James Willshire makes his debut at St George’s.

Though he became an exile in 1917, Russia remained deeply rooted in his soul. His cultural identity and his longing for his homeland imbue his music, not least the many much-loved works he wrote for his own instrument, the piano. Lucy Parham is joined by renowned actor, Henry Goodman.

Tal & Groethuysen make a welcome return to St George’s following their standout recital in the 2009 Festival. The virtuosity of the Israeli pianist Yaara Tal and her German partner Andreas Groethuysen is spellbinding and one of the highlights of this concert promises to be the dazzling piano duet arrangement of Mendelssohn’s youthful masterpiece. Tal & Groethuysen mark the Reger centenary celebrations with one of his most impressive works for two pianos alongside Beethoven’s four-hand version of his Great Fugue for string quartet.

We mark Erik Satie's 150th birthday with this ‘theatrecital’ (a dramatised piano recital — or play with a lot of music in it). Directed by rising star Max Hoehn, winner of the 2015 Independent Opera Director Fellowship, ‘Memoirs of a Pear-Shaped Life’ brings together the autobiographical musings of an ageing Satie with a broad selection of his piano music. From the early Gnossiennes and Gymnopedies to the more whimsical and experimental miniatures of later years, they are played here by Anne Lovett — like Satie himself, a composer-pianist from Normandy.

Pärt Adam’s Lament; Festina Lente; Salve Regina; Symphony No 4 ‘Los Angeles’

Along with Steve Reich, Arvo Pärt is considered one of today’s leading contemporary composers and has created his own instantly recognisable style. Tonight the mystical Salve Regina is paired with Adam’s Lament, a work representing ‘humankind in its entirety and each individual person alike’ through its depiction of the ‘fallen Adam’. At the heart of the programme is the first of Pärt’s symphonies to be written in his signature ‘tintinnabuli’ style after 1976 (Symphony No 4), and the meditative miniature Festina Lente.

Dove For an Unknown Soldier Rutter Requiem

Two powerful and moving works for Remembrance Sunday performed by City of Bristol Choir with the boys of Bristol Youth Choir, renowned tenor soloist Nicholas Sharratt and The Lochrian Ensemble, conducted by David Ogden. Through settings of war poetry, Jonathan Dove’s cantata tells the story of one man’s journey through the First World War, beginning with his enthusiasm and decision to enlist; discovering the reality of war; finding death on the battlefield; and finally reflecting on the grief of those left behind. John Rutter is the patron of City of Bristol Choir and to mark the start of its 25th anniversary season, the choir performs his setting of the Requiem with its rich harmonies, poignant melodies and angelic soprano solos sung by Esther Mallett.

GRAHAM FITKIN GROUP ‘WING’ (World première)

One of the leading composers of his generation, Graham Fitkin’s recent work has included a cello concerto for Yo Yo Ma and a commission for London’s Cultural Olympiad in 2012. Graham is also a West Country native, born in Cornwall with strong links to Bristol and its musical culture, including St George’s. His taut, propulsive music reflects a strong interest in technology and engineering, which made him a perfect choice for our special ‘Art of Flight’ commission. This new piece, Wing, to be given its premiere in the second half of this all-Fitkin bill, was partly inspired by a visit to the historic Bristol Aeroplane Company hangars at Filton. ‘I remember as a boy designing and throwing paper planes out of high windows and trying to get them to go further. And generally failing,’ Graham says. ‘I still wonder about this… Thrust and lift. Wings and flaps…’ Come and see Wing take flight for the first time.

Innovation 216 by Liz Lane is a massed brass band and choir extravaganza, tracing aspects of Bristol’s aeronautical history including the iconic Concorde, through reminiscences and memories drawn from past and present workers in the industry.

One of the West Country’s premier brass bands join forces with training bands from around the region alongside several hundred voices to create a journey through some of Bristol’s flight history, including the iconic Concorde, in Liz Lane’s newly commissioned work, Innovation 216.

The Troubadour in Waterloo Street, Clifton, has been described as the most famous and influential folk club outside London. TUBULAR BRASS PLAY TUBULAR BELLSOne of the all-time great classic albums, Tubular Bells, is performed live by Tubular Brass, a specially formed 28-piece brass band made up of some of the UK’s leading players. Plus, in the first half of the concert the ensemble presents Mary Casio, a new commission for brass band and ’70s analogue synthesisers by Hannah Peel, a young ‘next generation’ electronic composer who grew up playing in colliery brass bands. Mike Oldfield’s Tubular Bells stayed in the UK charts for 273 weeks, becoming one of the best-selling albums of all time. Mary Casio pays affectionate tribute to it and the context of ’70s prog concept albums, together with the influences of electronica pioneers Daphne Oram and Delia Derbyshire. Come on an awesome adventure of myth and legend, through a modern take on an Ancient Greek classic. Outwit greedy monsters, escape the savage Cyclops, survive the sweet-singing siren sisters and overcome vengeful gods to save the day with the cleverest Greek hero of all time — Odysseus (he of Wooden Horse fame). Michael and Tom open a Pandora’s Box of storytelling, theatre, song and buffoonery, puppets, props and participation, suitable for anyone with a spirit for adventure.

FAMILY FLIGHT DAY‘The Art of Flight’ culminates with four hours of family fun as the hall is transformed into a veritable aerodrome. Get hands-on with installations from At-Bristol, including a flight deck, wind tunnel and wind table, and make paper airplanes and ‘spinners’ to test fly. There’s music too as we welcome brilliant brass players on stage to provide a suitably flighty soundtrack to all the making and flying!

OPENING HOURS

Monday — Friday 9am — 6pm. The Box Office remains open until the end of the interval on concert days and opens one and a half hours before the concert start time for weekend shows.

Online — book online 24 hours a day at stgeorgesbristol.co.uk.

Telephone — 0845 40 24 001. All major credit cards (except American Express), Maestro and Delta cards are accepted.

In person — the Box Office is located on the right hand side of the building (from Great George Street).

BOOKING FEES

Booking fees contribute towards the cost of processing card payments, posting out tickets and providing up-to-date, reliable and convenient ticketing services to our customers.

Credit/debit card transaction fee £1 — charged per transaction using a credit or debit card online, over the phone or in person.

Administration fee £1 — charged per transaction to all bookers and standardised across all booking methods (online, in person and by telephone).

Postage fee 70p — tickets can be posted if requested; the cost covers postage and materials.

Concessions Prices are indicated in brackets after the full price. These apply to those in receipt of Jobseekers Allowance or benefits, disabled people, senior citizens, under-18s and full-time students (unless otherwise stated). Proof of eligibility must be presented in order to qualify, where appropriate.

Carers Free carer tickets are available for each full-paying ticket holder who requires someone to assist them with their visit. See above for concession details.

CAVATINA Free tickets for 8 — 25 year olds for certain chamber concerts. Look out for the and be sure to quote CAVATINA when booking tickets. Visit cavatina.net for more details.

Group offer One ticket free in every group of 10 for all events promoted by St George’s Bristol.

Family ticket One child goes free in a family party of four or more.

Refunds Tickets are non-transferable and refunds can only be offered on events which are sold out (and where there is demand) up to 48 hours before an event. Physical tickets must be returned.

Latecomers and readmission Admission will be offered at the first suitable break but admission and readmission cannot be guaranteed. The management reserves the right to refuse admission to any person.

Data protection When you book a ticket your details are stored on the St George’s computer database. This information will only be used to send you details of events at St George’s and at other arts organistions with your permission — Data Protection Act registration number: PZ5013390

General InformationAmplification Some events at St George’s are amplified. If this causes any concern, please check with the Box Office when booking.

Facilities for those with additional needs St George’s welcomes visitors with additional needs. The venue is fully accessible from Charlotte Street. Please mention your particular needs to the Box Office when booking and all assistance will be given. Limited parking is available, but must be reserved in advance. Toilet facilities are located in the bar and accessible by lift.

Sound reinforcement St George’s Bristol is equipped with a T-Loop hearing system.

Guide dogs Guide dogs are admitted to all parts of St George’s Bristol.

Family friendly St George’s welcomes children and we programme a variety of family-friendly concerts. Parents are asked to remember that some concerts may not be suitable. Please check the individual event pages on our website for recommended age guidance. Our acoustic is extremely sensitive and sound carries so babies and young children cannot be admitted to the auditorium for ticketed events unless otherwise stated. All children must be issued with a ticket.

How to find us...Customers are reminded that on-street parking is strictly controlled with the nearest car park located ten minutes away on Trenchard Street (travelbristol.org/drive).

On foot: St George’s Bristol is located two minutes' walk off Park Street.

By bus: Frequent bus services 1 8 9 from Temple Meads railway station (visit firstgroup.com for details of the best bus for your journey).

By taxi: There are numerous taxis in the area with ranks located on Park Street and Queen’s Road (outside Sainsbury’s).

By bike: Bike racks can be found at the Great George Street entrance, so why not cycle to St George’s!
