Office of the Archbishop 835 North Rush Street Chicago, IL 60611-2030 312.534.8230 archchicago.org Spring 2017 Dear Friends in Christ, On the weekend of June 10-11, 2017, we will take up a special collection for the Retired Priests of the Archdiocese. In May of 2016, I ordained five men to the priesthood. This May I ordained another five men. Thirteen priests retired at the end of June 2016. By the end of this coming June, an additional twenty priests will retire. These retirements will bring our total of retired priests to 230. This will mean that close to 30% of our clergy will have reached retirement status. 35 of our retired priests are either in nursing homes or are receiving home care. I am very grateful to our retired priests who are able to continue to share their priestly ministry in our parishes. I realize that many parishes depend upon their service for daily and Sunday Masses, baptisms, weddings, funerals and countless other good works of the Church. Without the help of our retired priests many parishes would have to reduce Mass schedules and other sacramental services. Our retired priests rely upon your help now. The Priests’ Retirement and Mutual Aid Association (PRMAA) cares for our retired priests. As you know well, the cost for health care, prescription drugs and nursing home care continues to increase. This special collection in June is different from Retirement Fund for Religious collection in December. That collection supports retired men and women in religious orders. Retired archdiocesan priests do not receive any funds from that collection, which is why I am asking you to support them with this Fund for Retired Priests. This letter gives me the opportunity to share my heartfelt appreciation for the ministry and devotion of our retired priests. I also want to remember all the faithful priests who have gone to their eternal reward, and I commend them to your prayers as well. Please know of my gratitude to you for your most gracious generosity in this collection last year and I ask that you repeat your kindness this year. Your donations, your prayers, and your good wishes are an affirmation of our retired priests and the good they have accomplished in service to the people of the archdiocese. With every good wish, I remain, Sincerely Yours in Christ, Cardinal Blase J. Cupich Archbishop of Chicago

This weekend there is a letter from Cardinal Cupich. Yours in Christ,

THE INEXPRESSIBLE MYSTERY The God of the universe is mysterious. Science has not been able to solve the mystery of how the universe came into being or explain exactly what continues to give it creative energy and masterful design. No religion asserts that it has found words to name fully the ineffable mystery of God, for no matter what name we use, God always transcends our limited ability to understand. God is a mystery to be believed, not known. And yet, we Christians believe that our name for God best expresses that inexpressible mystery: God is the Most Holy Trinity of three persons united in a communion of love, pouring forth that creative, saving, sanctifying love into the world. Today’s scriptures celebrate the mystery of the Trinity and give us clues for living that mystery in our lives. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

Prayer with Scripture

We invite you to an encounter of prayer where you can stop from the hurry of the moment and listen to God through God’s Word, in silence, meditation, ad-oration and contemplation. In this short but intense time, we listen to a talk that introduces us into the understanding of the Word of God, which later, we reflect on and meditate in an attitude of faith, discov-ering what God is trying to reveal to us. The prayer is accompanied by the exposition of the Blessed Sacrament with songs to help the faithful enter more into prayer.

SCHEDULING THE USE OF PARISH FACILITIES AUGUST 2017 THRU JUNE 30, 2018 The calendar year for the use of parish facili-ties by parish ministries is from August 1st through June 30th. During the month of July no events are scheduled. This allows time for the extensive summer cleaning and repairs in the buildings. When summer maintenance projects require August scheduling, part or all of August may also be una-vailable for use by parish and other organizations. The calendar committee will meet after July 1, 2016 to approve the scheduling of events for the months through June 2017. All organizations re-questing space must submit the official scheduling forms (available in the rectory). Forms must be completed in full and returned to the rectory no later than June 30, 2016 No organization should assume that the space and meeting times available in past years will continue to be available during the 2017-18 school year. All groups and parish organizations are, therefore, reminded to await the confirmation of available space for dates submitted before finalizing plans for events.

MARRIED IN 1967? HAVE YOU REGISTERED FOR THE ANNUAL GOLDEN WEDDING ANNIVERSARY MASS? If not, there is still time to register. The Golden Wedding Anniversary Mass will be held on Sunday, September 17, 2017 at 2:45 pm at Holy Name Cathedral. To register, please contact your local parish, or register online at pvm.archchicago.org

Your parish doesn’t get two weeks off with

pay. Please remember to send in your

envelope even if you are on vacation.

DRESS APPROPRIATELY FOR MASS As warm weather is here, we would like to remind everyone that Sunday Mass is the most im-portant and solemn event of the week. It is not an “informal occasion.” As a consequence, the appro-priate attire for Mass should be characterized by modesty, dignity, and elegance. Clothing suitable for a picnic, or for the beach, can indicate a lack of respect for the Eucharistic Sacrifice.

The Blessed Trinity Mystery is irresistible to hu-man nature. We are intrigued by the pleasure of trying to solve them and awed by the mysteries we can’t solve. How joyous it is then, in Matthew 28:16-20, to find a mystery right in the heart of our Christian calling. Jesus told His disciples to "go to all peoples and baptize them in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit." There it is, the divine mystery of the Trinity, nestled at the heart of the work every Christian has been called to do. A mys-tery that makes us gasp in wonder, that will draw us back with curiosity when our awe wears into com-monplace acceptance. A mystery planted at the root of our faith, to feed us, strengthen us, challenge, compel and comfort us.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION It is often heard that today’s observance is an “idea feast,” and that it is somewhat difficult to grasp its meaning. Other great solemnities, such as Christmas and Easter, have an easily grasped core. Yet, even though the Trinity is at the heart of our faith, firmly declared in the Creed since the Council of Nicea in 325, we are used to having people shrug and say, “Well, it’s a mystery.” Perhaps it is more helpful to think of this as a “relationship feast,” since it unveils our deepest identity. Dorothy Day was a great social reformer, pacifist, and ardent lover of the Trinity. When people told her that she would certainly be canonized one day (the process is indeed underway), she protested dismissively by remarking that people were raising a fuss just because she was not afraid to talk about God. She loved the Trinity, and treasured the traditional icon for the feast, also known as “The Hospitality of Abraham,” depicting the three angelic beings seated at a table tilted toward the viewer and laden with bread and wine. For her, the Trinity revealed the heart of the Catholic life, three C’s if you will: community, communication, and communion. That was not an “idea” for her, but what it means to be created in the image of the Triune God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

ON SUNDAY, JUNE 25TH THE SICK LIST WILL BE UPDATED.

PLEASE CALL THE RECTORY BY MONDAY, JUNE 19TH (9:30 AM) IF YOU WOULD LIKE A NAME TO STAY ON THE LIST.

ADDING NAMES TO THE PARISH SICK LIST It has always been the goal of St. Eugene to offer our parish community an opportunity to pray for those

parishioners who are ill and in need of our prayers. We have tried to keep close track of these names for our Bulletin as they are made available to us.

However, now we face an important privacy issue, very much like the issues faced by hospitals, health institutions, and certainly by other parishes.

We cannot (by law) publicly let our parish community know the health status of any of our members without their permission.

We appreciate the fact that often friends, neighbors, and acquaintances wish to do something special for a person who is ill, and ask to place their name on the list to be prayed for. While their intentions are surely good, we simply can no longer accept names in this manner.

Names for the sick list placed in the Bulletin have to be called in by the person who is ill, or by a member of their immediate family. At the time they call in the name, they will be asked whether they are the sick person him/herself, or a member of their family, and if they give permission for the name to be placed on the list. They will be asked for the correct spelling of the sick person's name. If a family member, they will be required to give their name for our records.

Thank you for your patience regarding this process. We wish to do all we can to offer our parish community the opportunity to offer prayers for those who are ill — but we must also be cognizant of the fact that all members of our congregation are entitled to their privacy in this regard.

We ask all of our parishioners, if you have a loved one serving in the military,

to please contact the rectory office to give us the name of the soldier, so the

whole parish can pray for your loved one. A book in the church vestibule is

available for inscribing the names of all military personnel. This book will be part of the offertory

procession from now until the war is over.

A PRAYER L , . P . B . W J L S . A

OUR MISSION STATEMENT

Our mission as Catholics united in faith at St. Eugene Parish is to help bring God to people and people to God. Through evangelization, education and being of service to each other, we strive to make our parish community a holistic community in body, mind and spirit. It is our goal to develop, support, encourage and empower one another in our parish ministries, so that each person can reach their human and Christian po-tential. We are enthused about the future of St. Eugene and the whole Catholic Church and we pledge our participation in that future. We seek dialogue and open communication with all parishioners in fulfilling the needs of our parish. While recognizing the cultural diversities in our community, we will strive to bring all people together in Christ under a common bond of faith, hope and love.
