We left off noting that in creating the human person in God’s image, we lived in harmony with God, nature, and one another. However, the key to maintaining harmony was the human person’s willful desire to live as God’s creature, drawing from Him life and truth. The test of will is described in Genesis as a prohibition against tasting the fruit of the tree of knowledge of good and evil. It is an allegorical description of the prohibition of rejecting God’s sovereign position as the source of knowing what is good and evil. Eating the fruit of the tree of knowledge of good and evil encompassed experimenting, or trying evil out so that rather than take God’s word, the human person could determine through experience what was truly good and what was truly evil. The eating of the fruit was a sin of pride and a fundamental rejection of God, by assuming His authority. The tempter was wrong to suggest to our first parents that their rebellion would make them like gods. Willfully shattering the harmony and union with God was devastating. In a few sentences, the book of Genesis describes the ensuing disharmony between man and woman, and with nature, as well. The separation from God also shattered the harmony of original innocence which allowed reason to govern one’s basic human drives. This interior disharmony was indicated in the odd detail in which we are told that after the original sin, Adam and Eve recognized their nakedness and covered themselves. In the earlier passage on creation, we were told that they were naked and felt no shame. But once separated from God, their natural drive for a loving union, two becoming one, was shattered by selfishness, lust, and a sense of possession. The good news in the account of the Fall is that the first proclamation of the coming of a Redeemer is stated. God announced that there would one day be one, born of woman, who would counter the disobedience encouraged by the tempter, the serpent. Yours in Christ,

MISSION STATEMENT: As part of the living Body of Christ, Saint Cecilia parish on Bainbridge Island seeks to conform to the will of God through faith, works, teaching and stewardship of God’s creation as guided by the Holy Spirit, by the teachings of Christ, and the Grace of the Father. We celebrate this mission daily in prayer, liturgy, sacraments and life.

Dear Parishioners,

I would like to return to my catechetical series presenting my brief outline of the Catholic viewpoint.

KUDOS AND UPDATES

The Parish Office will be closed on Monday, September 4th for Labor Day. Bible Study will begin on September 12, at 9:45am in the St. Monica Room. We will use a 10-part DVD series called "Eucharist: Discovering the Mass in the Bible.” The series is presented by Brant Pitre, a distinguished Catholic Biblical Scholar, who "guides us through Scripture, history, and Church teaching to illuminate the wonder and miracle of the Eucharist with a fresh perspective." Please email Orysia Earhart at [email protected] for more information.

What can YOU do for your parish? Recently, parishioner Dick Abrams used his woodworking skills to repurpose the ambo from the old St. Cecilia Church into a beautiful new stand for the Book of Intentions. He also fashioned some of the leftover wood into a clever table-mover for Conger Hall. Thank you, Dick! And if you see something that needs to be done, and you have skills to do it, contact the parish office. We love your help!

Library News: “In Her Footsteps: The story of St. Kateri Tekakwitha”. This documentary features those touched by her, including Archbishop Charles Chaput, OFM, and Jake Finkbonner, the little boy who received the miraculous healing that led to Kateri’s canonization. Check it out!

Small improvements to the church have been made. Eight windows in the sanctuary were replaced with non-glare glass due to distracting, and sometimes blinding, glare from passing traffic and cars in the parking lot. Three windows with failed seals in the narthex were also replaced last week. And many thanks go out to the two Youthies who volunteered to spread 36 bags of mulch in Esterman Courtyard!

The parish library is looking for some more volunteers. Library volunteers work one Sunday about every 6 weeks, and may also be asked to help with the book sale and/or taking inventory once a year. Please contact Sonja Countryman at (206) 780-1134 or email at [email protected].

The Parish received a generous bequest from the estate of Carol Lubovich. Her family conveyed her enthusiastic support of Catholic education so the funds will be directed to the Saint Cecilia Catholic School Endowment where the donation is eligible for a $10,000 match from a school patron. If you would like information about leaving a bequest to the church, contact the Director of Planned Giving, Charisse Valtinson at [email protected] or 206-274-3117.
