PASTOR’S CORNER

TWO DISPOSITIONS OF PRAYER

In my homily last weekend, I posed the question: Why do we pray? If God is

all-knowing, all powerful and almighty and knows the deepest desires of our heart, then

what is the point of asking God what we need and our heart’s desires? Aside from the

fact that prayer is more than just “asking” but a personal relationship where God asks

and allows us to participate in the realization of his will in our lives, to pray is not to

twist the arm of God in order to agree to what we want, but it is primarily a living

relationship that seeks a deeper understanding between the God who loves us unconditionally and our response

to his love. At times, prayer is simply being alone with God and just being there in his presence.

In today’s Gospel, Luke presents us two very distinct characters and dispositions to prayer. The first

character is the Pharisee, who was so full of himself to the point that he never saw the need for God’s mercy

and providence. In his own estimate, he is almost perfect as he compares himself to the tax collector who was

next to him. The Pharisee’s relationship with God is simply based on his external observance of the law, a

relationship that is purely based on obligation and “check list”, nothing more. The second character is the tax

collector, who realizes that his sinful life needs conversion and in moving humility begs for God’s mercy. He

doesn’t compare himself to other people or justify his sins, but simply recognizes his frailties and asks for the

grace to be transformed by God.

Let us not pray like the Pharisee who wanted to be seen in the synagogue pretending to be in perfect

relationship with God, converting praying to simply an activity, one of his many chores but, rather, pray like

the tax collector, pleading and accepting God’s mercy and love because he knows in his mind and heart that

God’s unconditional love and mercy are immeasurable, always transforming us anew with his divine love. Do

we pray like the Pharisee, or do we come to God praying like the tax collector? – Fr. Cary

ALL SAINTS DAY MASSES

Friday, November 1, 2019

English Masses: 7:30am; noon, 6pm Spanish Misa: 7:30pm

St. Cecilia Parish Welcomes Deacon Joe Baltz

I was born in Albuquerque, New Mexico, third of four siblings, to two Catholic parents. I was homeschooled until 3rd grade at which point I went to Catholic school from 3rd to 8th grade. For high school, I went to the public school and through the grace of God and a great youth group I grew in the Faith. Since I was five years old, I always thought I should be a priest, and so after high school, I applied to the Archdiocese of Santa Fe, was accepted and sent to learn philosophy at Holy Trinity Seminary at the University of Dallas. I loved the education that I received and the four years there with my brother seminarians. From there, I was sent to learn theology at Mount Angel Seminary. I was ordained a deacon for the Archdiocese of Santa Fe June 6th, 2019, and am looking forward to being ordained a priest of Jesus Christ May 30th, 2020! I also am currently applying for military chaplaincy for the United States Army and, if accepted, I will serve at least 5 years as a priest in active duty.

JESUS I TRUST IN YOU

Please continue to pray The Chaplet of Divine Mercy every Monday at 7pm in the Adoration Chapel with your new leader, Karen Stratton.

Needed This Week DISH SOAP & BAR SOAP

In this Sunday’s Gospel, the tax collector’s prayer allows God to be God and so allows God to pour

mercy into his heart. When we pray and give alms to the poor, we allow God’s mercy to be poured

into their hearts..

Advanced Directive for the End of Life

Information has been requested about a Catholic end-of-life directive. It is best to designate, in writing, a trusted family member or friend that knows how you wish to proceed with health care in case of

poor health or accident.

At this time, Dr. Charles Bentz and Dr. William Toffler, both Catholic physicians, are working with the Portland Archdiocese and Oregon Right to

Life for a good “Catholic” directive. We will have a presentation for our church when the presentation is completed.

(200-202. 228)

DOMINGO 30 DE TIEMPO ORDINARIO ~ 27 DE OCTUBRE, 2019 (continuado)

Oct. 25, 2017. NUESTRO OFERTORIO Esta son las cantidades que aportamos en las Misas de español: 10/20/19 $3,344 10/13/19 $2,740 10/6/19 $2,376 9/29/19 $3,280 GRACIAS por su continua generosidad y par ticipación en el trabajo del Señor .

Willamette West Habitat for Humanity’s Catholic Community Match Challenge: An Anonymous Donor Will Match Gifts, Up To $30,000!

"For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, a stranger and you welcomed me, naked and you clothed me..." Mt 25:35-36. We are called to care for our neighbors, and we have a great opportunity right here in our parish. St. Cecilia Parish is partnering with the Catholic Community (St. Pius, their Knights of Columbus, St. Anthony, and Holy Trinity) and Willamette West Habitat for Humanity to double our impact and build a home with a family in need. All donations made during the Catholic Community Match Challenge will benefit the Catholic Build at the Denney Gardens neighborhood in Beaverton. Yes, this is within our parish borders, about two miles from the church! About the Catholic Build: The Catholic Community has united to fund and support the construction of the Catholic Build home. This is one of sixteen affordable homes at Denney Gardens. All families who partner with Habitat build their own homes alongside volunteers, pay an affordable mortgage and are grateful for your help. Pamir’s family are the future homeowners of the Catholic Build! Who is Pamir? Pamir and his family are from Afghanistan. Pamir and his wife have two daughters and a baby boy on the way. Pamir’s dream is to provide a safe secure home for his family, where his children can safely play outside. In 2009, Pamir started a position in finance working on various USAID projects in Afghanistan. His work with USAID led to an opportunity to move to the United States. He is so grateful for the opportunity he was given, and at the end of 2015, Pamir moved to the US with his family! With his finance background, Pamir successfully found a position at U.S. bank. However, working full-time was still not enough to provide the dream he wanted for his family. Obstacles include mold and leaking in their home, where they pay 50% of his income just for rent. Through a friend, he learned of Habitat, and they began the application process. In 2018, Pamir found out they would be a future Willamette West Habitat for Humanity homeowner. The Catholic Build at Denney Gardens is their future home! Today, they have hope and a path to a brighter future. “A Habitat home means a safe place to raise our children that we can call home. We will no longer have stress about property management or increases of rent.” - Pamir Thank you for working alongside Pamir and his family to empower them to reach their dream of having a safe home, in a neighborhood with a playground where their kids will have the opportunity to thrive. The match Challenge began on September 3rd and ends on October 31st. Text-to-give and double your donation: text habitatwest to 1-844-701-5181. Then, take a drive over by Denney and Scholl's Ferry Road to see the Habitat Build. Questions? Feel free to contact Marci Neufer at 503-844-7606 ext. 104 or Mike Flanigan at 503-524-6922.

AMEN.
