PASTOR’S CORNER
SECOND CHANCES
The strong message of repentance in the Gospel this weekend cannot be missed. It may
sound harsh, but Christ is very clear with the end result of non-repentance: “I tell you, if you
do not repent, you will perish.” Those are the exact words of Jesus in the Gospel this weekend. It’s not a
threat, but the truth spoken in love to someone whom God does not want to lose. To perish or to lose eternal
life is not a consequence of God’s severity or punishment, but a willful decision on the part of the person who
wants to be in the darkness rather than in the light. God always desires the best for us, but he cannot force us to
love him. If one chooses to be in the darkness, God cannot force him/her to be in the light. And, as experience
tells us, we cannot be at two places at the same time. One has to make an informed and conscious decision
where one wants to belong.
But, despite our own transgressions, God does not have a “one strike, you are done or out” policy. As
the Psalmist in the readings this weekend sings: “the Lord is kind and merciful.” In the parable in the Gospel
today, Jesus recounts the story of a fig tree that the owner wanted to cut down because it hasn’t borne fruit for
three years, but the gardener convinced him to give it another chance while he cultivates the ground around it
and fertilizes it so that it may bear fruit in the future. This parable speaks of second chances and new
opportunities that God gives us whenever we are that fig tree that doesn’t bear fruit. The Church is that willing
“gardener” that wants to cultivate the ground around us by directing us to the right path, helping us to navigate
the ways of the Gospel, and “fertilizing” us with the sacraments where we grow in virtues, which hopefully
will help us to bear fruits in the end.
What aspects in your life right now need to bear fruit? Who is the gardener who can help you bear
fruit? Or, who is that person whom you can be a gardener to, helping that person to bear fruit? – Fr. Cary

STOVE TOP STUFFING MIX
In today’s Gospel, Jesus is quite clear in his
message: “bear fruit or be cut down.” This Lent,
we are called to cultivate and fertilize our spiritual
lives through prayer, fasting and almsgiving.
Through your almsgiving, you are performing a
good work—far greater than you think. Know
that your nickel, dime or quarter is multiplied by
the coins placed by others in the St. Vincent

The Church gives us three practices of LENT—prayer, fasting, and almsgiving—
to help us prepare to receive whatever God wants to give us. These practices are a signal to God and to
ourselves that we know we need God in our lives. Lent helps us act first and then gain the
motivation to change our lives.
Prayer . . . Attend daily Mass or come to Friday Stations of the Cross
Abstinence and Fasting . . . All Catholics 14 years and older must abstain from meat on
Ash Wednesday, the Fridays of Lent and Good Friday.
All Catholics between the ages of 18 and 59 are to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday.
To fast means to eat one full meal. Two smaller meals may also be taken for good health, but together they should not be greater
than a full meal. Eating between meals is not permitted; however, liquids (including coffee, milk and fruit juices) are allowed.
Almsgiving . . . Try to put aside $1 each day or $8 each week for the 40 days of Lent for Outreach Ministries of our Parish: Our Partner
Parish-Saint Alexander Catholic Church in Cornelius, St. Vincent de Paul, and our Social Concerns Ministry.
Please look for your weekly Lenten envelopes mailed in the regular mail packet.
A special collection will be taken on Palm Sunday for those who do not use envelopes.
THANK YOU FOR YOUR GENEROSITY!!!

JESUS I TRUST IN YOU
WHAT ARE THE
EXTRAORDINARY GRACES
THAT CAN ONLY BE
OBTAINED ON
DIVINE MERCY SUNDAY?
Complete forgiveness of sins and punishment!!
HOW CAN I RECEIVE EXTRAORDINARY GRACES
ON DIVINE MERCY SUNDAY?
To receive the ocean of graces the Lord promised on
Divine Mercy Sunday, the only condition is to receive Holy
Communion worthily on that day by making a good confession
in preparation and living in such a way that you remain in the
state of grace to be able to receive that Holy Communion with
great trust in His Divine Mercy. Through the promise to grant
complete forgiveness of sins and punishment on the Divine
Mercy Sunday, our Lord asked St. Faustina to be sure to
perform acts of mercy and to come to Him in Holy Communion
with great trust in His mercy.
“Yes, the first Sunday after Easter is the Feast of Mercy, but
there must also be acts of mercy” (Diary, 742).
“The graces of My mercy are drawn by means of one vessel
only, and that is trust. The more a soul trusts, the more it will
receive” (Diary, 1578).
Our Lord’s promise to grant complete forgiveness of sins
and punishment to those who having gone to Confession,
receive Holy Communion on Divine Mercy Sunday is based on
private revelation approved by the Church. The faithful are
always free to accept it. Non-acceptance, however, cannot be
based on a doubt in the efficacy of the Eucharist, Christ’s true
presence, which is the source and summit of Christian life and
holiness.
The grace of the complete remission of sins and punishment
is theologically possible and does not contradict revealed
teaching.
DO I HAVE TO RECEIVE COMMUNION AND CONFESSION
ON THE ACTUAL DAY OR VIGIL?
Communion, yes. Confession, no.
Cardinal Macharski, the Archbishop of St. Faustina’s own
archdiocese of Krakow, Poland, wrote a pastoral letter to all his
priests on January 30, 1985, on how to prepare for and celebrate
Divine Mercy Sunday. In it, he said that all of Lent should be a
preparation to celebrate Easter and Divine Mercy Sunday
worthily. The Sacrament of Reconciliation should be received
sometime in Lent, not put off until the last minute (Holy Week).
We go to Confession with the intention of repentance and to
amend our lives, and we should live in such a way as to be
worthy to receive Holy Eucharist. If we have any venial sins,
a good Act of Contrition will take away those sins.

VISITING THE SICK/HOMEBOUND, or as we at
St. Cecilia call it , Communion Visitor, is one of the
oldest ministries in the Church. From the earliest days
of home services, the "ministers" would take the
Blessed Bread to those unable to attend. It continued as
a practice when church buildings were built. The
tradition continued with Deacons who would visit with
food and the Eucharist. Our Church today recognizes
this ministry as one of its most important. The
"Extra-ordinary Minister to the Sick" is the Face of the
Parish, the living witness that the community of faith
and worship has not forgotten the absent sick, the
invisible elderly or the unseen sufferers.
During Lent, we dig deep into our hearts to find new
ways to love and serve the Lord through service and
prayer. Do you have 1 extra hour a week to share, to
give that service, with companionship and faith to a
fellow parishioner. We need one-on-one home visitors,
care center Communion service leaders, and team
members for group visitation.

Mary Rigert (503) 888-8179
As one of the youngest Planned Parenthood clinic directors in the nation, Abby Johnson was involved in upwards of 22,000 abortions and counseled countless women on their reproductive choices. Her passion surrounding a woman's right to choose led her to become a spokesperson for Planned Parenthood, fighting to enact legislation for the cause she so deeply believed in, until the day she saw something that changed everything. www.unplannedfilm.com UNPLANNED will be at Regal Bridgeport Village beginning March 28. Mary Rigert has seen a screening of UNPLANNED. It is
riveting with Abby’s true story that shows the lies and the manipulation of Planned Parenthood with the ‘clients’ thinking the abortion will remove the ‘problem’. The physical, emotional, spiritual and psychological pain of abortion for babies, women, men and families is clearly illustrated. It is rated “R” because the beginning and the ending part of the abortion procedure is included. Check with Mary for more information. "After seeing Abby's transformation from running a Planned Parenthood clinic to joining our efforts to help women and save lives, I believe that anyone can change their mind on abortion." Shawn Carney, Campaign Director, 40 Days for Life.

THIRD SUNDAY OF LENT ~ MARCH 24, 2019
FIRST READING ~ EXODUS 3:1-8A, 13-15
Moses was tending the flock of his father-in-law Jethro, the priest of Midian. Leading the flock across the desert, he
came to Horeb, the mountain of God. There an angel of the LORD appeared to Moses in fire flaming out of a bush. As
he looked on, he was surprised to see that the bush, though on fire, was not consumed. So Moses decided, “I must go
over to look at this remarkable sight, and see why the bush is not burned.”
When the LORD saw him coming over to look at it more closely, God called out to him from the bush, “Moses!
Moses!” He answered, “Here I am.” God said, “Come no nearer! Remove the sandals from your feet, for the place
where you stand is holy ground. I am the God of your fathers, “ he continued, “the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac,
the God of Jacob.” Moses hid his face, for he was afraid to look at God. But the LORD said, “I have witnessed the
affliction of my people in Egypt and have heard their cry of complaint against their slave drivers, so I know well what
they are suffering. Therefore I have come down to rescue them from the hands of the Egyptians and lead them out of
that land into a good and spacious land, a land flowing with milk and honey.”
Moses said to God, “But when I go to the Israelites and say to them, ‘The God of your fathers has sent me to you,’ if
they ask me, ‘What is his name?’ what am I to tell them?” God replied, “I am who am.” Then he added, “This is what
you shall tell the Israelites: I AM sent me to you.”
God spoke further to Moses, “Thus shall you say to the Israelites: The LORD, the God of your fathers, the God of
Abraham, the God of Isaac, the God of Jacob, has sent me to you.
“This is my name forever; thus am I to be remembered through all generations.”
RESPONSORIAL PSALM ~ PSALM 103: 1-2, 3-4, 6-7, 8, 11
The Lord is kind and merciful.
SECOND READING ~ 1 CORINTHIANS 10:1-6, 10-12
I do not want you to be unaware, brothers and sisters, that our ancestors were all under the cloud and all passed through
the sea, and all of them were baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea. All ate the same spiritual food, and all
drank the same spiritual drink, for they drank from a spiritual rock that followed them, and the rock was the Christ.
Yet God was not pleased with most of them, for they were struck down in the desert.
These things happened as examples for us, so that we might not desire evil things, as they did. Do not grumble as some
of them did, and suffered death by the destroyer. These things happened to them as an example, and they have been
written down as a warning to us, upon whom the end of the ages has come. Therefore, whoever thinks he is standing
secure should take care not to fall.
GOSPEL ~ LUKE 13:1-9
Some people told Jesus about the Galileans whose blood Pilate had mingled with the blood of their sacrifices. Jesus
said to them in reply, "Do you think that because these Galileans suffered in this way they were greater sinners than all
other Galileans? By no means! But I tell you, if you do not repent, you will all perish as they did! Or those eighteen
people who were killed when the tower at Siloam fell on them—do you think they were more guilty than everyone else
who lived in Jerusalem? By no means! But I tell you, if you do not repent, you will all perish as they did!"
And he told them this parable: "There once was a person who had a fig tree planted in his orchard, and when he came
in search of fruit on it but found none, he said to the gardener, 'For three years now I have come in search of fruit on this
fig tree but have found none. So cut it down. Why should it exhaust the soil?' He said to him in reply, 'Sir, leave it for
this year also, and I shall cultivate the ground around it and fertilize it; it may bear fruit in the future. If not you can cut
it down.'"

nuestros matrimonios atormentados, etc.

TERCER DOMINGO DE CUARESMA ~ MARZO 24, 2019 (continuado)

y miel”.
Moisés le dijo a Dios: “Está bien. Me presentaré a los hijos de Israel y les diré: ‘El Dios de sus padres me envía a ustedes’;
No
AMEN.

Como el Padre me amó
Como el Padre me amó
Yo os he amado.
Permaneced en mi amor,
Permaneced en mi amor. (bis)
Si guardais mis palabras
Y como hermanos os amais,
Compartireis con alegría
El don de la fraternidad.
Si os poneis en camino
Sirviendo siempre a la verdad,
Fruto daréis en abundancia;
Mi amor se manifestará.
No veréis amor tan grande
Estribillo
Préstale tus labios a Cristo
Estribillo
Préstale tus labios a Cristo
y dale tu vida también
El que de la nada te hizo
por cada talento da cien
por cada talent da cien
por cada talent da cien

Aunque Marche por la Oscuridad
Estribillo
Aunque marche por la oscuridad
Nada he de temer
Porque tú conmigo vas
Mi pastor que me hace sosegar
Tú que me conduces
A tus fuentes de paz
Tú me has bautizado
Por tu senda voy
Estribillo
Tú que me preparas
Tu mesa en la fe
Tú me das la copa
Rebosando está
Estribillo
No, no sea agradable.
Elimina mi Señor pensamientos que de ti
Hagan lastimarte.
Nunca me fltara mas nada.
Avergonzarme.
Arranca de mi el temor cuando los
Remordimientos
Quieran atacarme.
Mirame con compasión
Que en tu Misericordia puedas perdonarme.
Oh! Señor, Señor …...
