TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

This is the year of St. Paul, and so one of the most visited churches of Rome is also one of the most beautiful: the Basilica of St. Paul Outside the Walls. Like so many other churches, it was founded by the master-builder (or financier) Emperor Con-stantine about the year 315. Paul was martyred outside the walls of the City of Rome at a place called Tre Fontaine, probably on June 29, in the year 65, perhaps the first anniversary of St. Pe-ter's crucifixion. Christians buried him in a quiet place about two miles away, and visited to pray. Constantine was running low on bricks, apparently, because the first church was tiny. In 386 it was demolished and today's basilica begun. This vast and tower-ing space looks much the same today as it did in the fourth cen-tury. The centuries have not been kind to ancient Rome, but until the early 1800s St. Paul Outside the Walls survived beautifully, per-haps because it has been assigned for nearly a thousand years to Benedictine monks. It was therefore a vibrant place of daily prayer even through the centuries when Rome was a poor and nearly abandoned city. In 1823 a great fire resulted from a botched repair job to lead on the roof, and St. Paul's was de-stroyed. It is said that the whole world contributed to its restora-tion. Even the Russian czar and the viceroy of Egypt gave ala-baster, malachite, and lapis lazuli for the pillars and the tabernac-le. Several of the precious mosaics were able to be restored, bringing the ancient basilica back to life. One of the great treas-ures of the basilica is a set of prison chains, said to have been worn by the Apostle in the last days before his martyrdom. El día 2 de febrero se celebrará la Candelaria. En este día se conmemora la purificación de María, cuarenta días después de que dio a luz a Jesús. Candelaria viene del verbo latín candere (brillar), de allí la palabra candela, o sea, veladora. La cele-bración de la Purificación de María y la Presentación del Niño Jesús en el templo se con-memora con la bendición de todas las velas y ve-ladoras que se van a usar durante el año. Esto se hace con la esperanza de que nunca venga a faltar la luz, tanto material como espiritual, en las casas de los fieles. Los cristianos, como Simeón en el templo, pueden decir que ellos también han visto la salvación; Jesús la verdadera luz que brilla en brazos de María. PARISH ANNOUNCEMENTS/ANUNCIOS PARROQUIALES

Due to the severity of this year’s outbreak, the Most Reverend Bishop Nicholas DiMarzio, of the Archdiocese of Brooklyn, has mandated that effective immediately, the distribution of the Precious Blood to the faithful at Mass, be suspended. This suspension will be lifted upon conclusion of this flu season.

Let us remember that Christ is present under both species as per the teaching of the Church.

"Christ is so contained, whole and entire, under either species, that, as under the species of bread are contained not only the body, but also the blood and Christ entire; so in like manner, under the species of wine are truly contained not only the blood, but also the body and Christ entire." The faithful should use common sense precaution when attending Mass or other public functions in the parish to minimized the spreading of the virus. We asked the faithful to refrain from physically exchanging the sign of peace at Mass if a person exhibits any signs of the disease.

REMINDER: All Mass intention requests must be taken to the rectory. Please submit your request two weeks in advance in order to be added to the weekly bulletin. No intentions will be taken before the start of the Mass to avoid distractions. Please note that the suggested donation for each intention is $15. We appreciate your cooperation.

Debido a la gravedad del brote de la gripe en este año. El Reverendisimo Obispo Nicholas DiMarzio, de la Arquidiocesis de Brooklyn, ordenó que de inmediato se suspenda la distribución de la Preciosa Sangre a los fieles durante la misa.

Esta suspensión será levantada al finalizar la temporada de la gripe.

Recordemos que Cristo está presente en ambas especies según las enseñanzas de la Iglesia.

"Cristo esta presente, entero, en ambas especies, bajo la especie del pan Jesus esta presente no sólo en cuerpo, sino también su sangre. De la misma manera, Jesus esta presente entero bajo la especie del vino."

Los fieles deben usar el sentido común y precaución cuando asisten a la Misa u otras funciones públicas en la parroquia. Para tratar de minimizar la propagación del virus. Pedimos a los fieles que se abstengan de intercambiar el saludo de la paz durante la misa si alguien exhibe señales de estar enfermo o enferma.

RECORDATORIO: Para solicitar intenciones de la misa. Usted debe ir a a la rectoría, con dos semanas de anticipación para que podamos agregar sus peticiones en el boletín semanal. No es permitido solicitar intenciones antes del comienzo de la misa para evitar distracciones. Por favor, tenga en cuenta que la donación sugerida para cada intención de la misa es de $15. Adoration of the Most Blessed Sacrament

Come and spend some time worshiping Our Lord Jesus Christ in the Eucharist! It is a privilege for us to be able to adore the Lord in our Church. Every Thursday, the Eucharist is exposed from 9:30am and kept on the Altar until ending with Benediction at 7:30pm.
