Comprehensive Aquatic Risk Management Program Featuring the HydroZone3TM

At SRK we have designed a comprehensive Aquatic Risk Management Program to build on and augment the new Model Aquatic Health Code by the CDC, and help prevent the spread of recreational water illnesses (RWIs). The program embraces proactive standards, policies, and procedures, while maintaining essential water risk-management principles. Our HydroZone3™ System is a proprietary pool water treatment system, which incorporates a unique combination of time-tested techniques using ozone, UV light, and minimal chlorine. The system can be scaled to fit any size pool—either indoor or out-door—ranging from public facilities to private homes.

Our Program Provides:

In-house training in proper water chemistry testing and saturation index control

Remote monitoring by SRK Modern Pool Solutions along with continual surveillance by the Aquatic Risk Management Program

SRK phone support with highly trained Aquatics Supervisor (each site receives daily check-in from its own SRK supervisor)

System and efficiency evaluation, with recommen-dations for energy efficiency and streamlining of maintenance

Customized operating manuals for daily and weekly guidance

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s “Triple A’s of Healthy Swimming” suggests the addition of ultraviolet or ozone technology to pool water treatment to help protect you and your family.

Page 4: SRK brochure_1_8_16

Ozone TreatmentOzone is used to oxidize the water, breaking the bond between ammonia and chlorine, keeping the chlorine free and available to fight bacteria, and completely removing the smell of chlorine.

UV TreatmentUltraviolet light is used to enhance the ozone and convert it to hydroxyl radicals, which increases its ability to kill pathogens and viruses.

Chlorine TreatmentAdvanced Oxidization eliminates 90% of the usual chlorine levels. Only trace amounts of chlorine, a low level of 0.5 ppm, is used to sanitize the pool.

Three Levels of ProtectionAs recommended by the CDC, SRK’s HydroZone3™ System employs techniques using both ozone and UV light as secondary disinfectants for a total of three levels of protection against harmful bacteria. These techniques break down as follows:

Page 5: SRK brochure_1_8_16

1. The HydroZone3™ process first pumps pool water from the surface of your pool into the system.

2. Unprocessed water passes through sand filtration to eliminate any larger contaminates. Ozone is then injected into the filtered water on its way to the UV system.

3. Ozonated water is passed through the UV light system, sterilizing any existing pathogens and creating an advanced oxidation effect.

4. Activated water then enters the contact chamber, where the advanced oxidation process burns off pathogens, pesticides, and any other lingering contaminates. This process also breaks down chloramines, eliminating bound contaminates and freeing up chlorine, which is recycled back into the pool water.

5. Oxidized water is degassed, while ozone and oxidation by-products are removed.

6. Purified water is finally tested in-line, and a low dose of chlorine is added, if needed, to protect against bather-to-bather contamination before being returned to the pool.

Chlorine-Resistant Germs

Contrary to popular belief, chlorine does not kill all germs instantly. Microbes exist today that are very tolerant to chlorine and until recently were not known to cause human disease. Once these microbes enter the pool, it can take anywhere from minutes to days for chlorine to kill them. Swallowing a tiny amount of water containing these bacteria can make you sick. The HydroZone3TM can help. Recreational Water Illnesses, or RWIs, include a wide variety of diseases, such as gastrointes-tinal, skin, ear, respiratory, eye, neurologic, and wound infections. The most commonly reported RWI is diar-rhea, and one of its leading causes is cryptosporidium, otherwise known as “crypto.” According to the CDC, this parasite is easily transmittable in pools both due of its small size and its ability to withstand chlorine disin-fection. “This parasite is extremely chlorine-resistant,” the report’s lead author Michele Hlavsa told CBS News.

“Swimmers bring it into the water when they are sick with diarrhea,” she says. Primary symptoms also include stomachache, nausea, vomiting, and fever. Similar illnesses are caused by other waterborne microbes as well, such as Giardia, Shigella, norovirus, and E. coli.

Outbreaks on the Rise A report issued in June 2015 documented 90 outbreaks of waterborne disease in recreational water venues between 2011 and 2012. The CDC tracked at least 1,788 cases and 95 hospitalizations throughout 32 states, as well as in Puerto Rico. The CDC also states there has been a major increase in the number of RWI outbreaks associated with swimming over the last two decades. To protect swimming venues that have experienced crypto outbreaks, the CDC has issued a set of guidelines recommending that they “install secondary disinfection like ultraviolet light or ozone to kill the parasite,” CBS reports. With RWI outbreaks on the rise, swimmers and facilities need to be proactive in protecting themselves and others by using a system like our HydroZone3TM.

Harmful Chloramines vs. Free Available Chlorine (What’s That Smell?)

When you swim in a pool you not only share the water with others, you also share the germs each swimmer brings in with them. Many of these germs are killed by free available chlorine but many chlorine-only pools struggle with controlling chloramines. The smell of chlorine many of us associ-ate with swimming pools is an indication that the chemical is no longer fighting germs and protecting bathers. Free available chlorine, on the other hand, has no smell or taste. Chloramines are the irritants in the air at swimming pools, which exist in various forms, such as dichloramine or trichloramine. The result of chlorine binding with sweat, urine, and other waste from swimmers, these by-products possess no sanitation value at all. Dichloramine and trichlo-ramine in particular are harmful to inhale and are known to cause eye irritation and breathing issues, such as swimmer’s asthma. As the concentration of these by-products in the water increases, they move from the water into the surrounding air. To remove them, we oxidize the bonds created between the chlorine and undesirable substances using the HydroZone3TM and the hydroxyl radicals that it produces, leaving the chlorine free and available to fight bacteria.

“When we heard about the ozone system, we were immediately intrigued. We made a visit to one of SRK’s recently completed ozone pools, and I had the chance to swim…it was the most refreshing water I had ever experienced in a man-made pool. Delicious, fresh, light, bubbly, sparkling, clean, and did I mention refreshing? We are now in our second season of supreme enjoyment and it is difficult to express the depth of pleasure that our SRK ozone pool has brought to our family and friends…it continues to be a life-changing and joyful marvel that exceeds our expectations on a regular basis.”

—Paul S. Alter, AIA, Principal, Lee H. Skolnick Architecture + Design Partnership

“SRK’s seamless design, construction, and maintenance of our elegant pool have been spot on. SRK’s sophisticated ozone UV technology separates them from the pack. We could not be happier!” —Jodie Eastman, active philanthropist, and John Eastman, Partner, Eastman & Eastman, and Director, ASCAP and Apple Corps Ltd.

“Imagine swimming without any damage to your skin, nails, hair, eyes, or clothing. Our SRK pool has utterly spoiled us for other swimming pools. It is, literally, like swimming in a cool, clean glass of drinking water. Glorious. Not only do we feel like we are doing our part for the environment, but there is no mistaking how much better it is for our bodies.”

—Bobby Flay, award-winning chef, restauranteur, cookbook author, and television host on the Food Network and Cooking Channel.

“Kenny has developed an impressive set of glowingly satisfied clients who are using his system. He also conducted multiple tests, by himself and by independent laboratories, all of which have confirmed the system’s performance.”—Aqua, August 2015

“This is the first year with this system and it has been great for us in many ways. First, our membership has been overjoyed with how the water feels while they are swimming…the club has experienced a lot higher volume of swimmers because of how the water feels to them…[Also] I am not fighting with the chemicals all day long, trying to get the water balanced…Lastly, with this system I have “peace of mind”… having SRK remotely monitor our pool has been priceless.”

SRK’s services are currently expanding geo-graphically, especially regarding ozone and UV systems. They recently installed an ozone and UV system on a large estate in the Bahamas, another system in Palm Beach, Florida, two in Avalon, New Jersey, and are presently consulting on projects in New York City and Santa Monica, California for new construction. SRK introduced their traveling installation team in the last three years and hopes to see them working full force in Florida, California, and New York in the years to come.

About SteveSteve Kenny has a long history with water. By the time he was in high school in the early 80s, he was already cleaning pools, helping out his father with his pool business in East Hampton, Long Island. (When not working he was still in the water, racing sailboats—a challenge he pursues to this day.) In 1995 he took the reins of the company and realized it was time to raise the business to a new level. More than two decades of experience and education later (since 2006, training with the Genesis 3 Design Group), Kenny is proud to say he has revamped the chemical landscape of pool care.

Today his passion is to change the way we treat pool water and provide a solution to recreational water illness. His articles on water chemistry and the use of ozone and UV have been featured in the pool trade industry magazines Aqua, Watershapes, and Athletic Business, and in 2014 he was interviewed on the radio by Southampton’s NPR station. A major step toward his goal took place in 2008, when Kenny built and installed the first chlorine-reduced ozone and UV residential pool for The Idea House, a project by Hamptons Cottage and Gardens magazine. This was the first HydroZone3TM system, and SRK still cares for that amazing pool to this day. In 2013, he in-stalled the first commercial pool using an ozone and UV system to be approved by the Suffolk County Health Department at the historic Maidstone Club in East Hampton, New York. That same year Kenny built the HydroZone3TM demo trailer, enabling him to take the technology on the road for demonstrations. With this trailer, he can at last prove first-hand how dramatically the system improves results to protect swimmers’ health.

About SRKBased in East Hampton, Long Island, SRK builds, services, renovates, and consults on all aspects of pools and spas. They have installed approximately 100 HydroZone3TM systems in the Hamptons, and each year service more than 200 pools, build about 7 to 10, and renovate at least 14.
