lntroduction

This European Standard specifies the major technical characteristics of curtain walling and includes a systematicframework of performance requirements and test criteria to ensure conformity to the essential requirements of theConstruction Products Directive and to provide appropriate principles in the technical specification of the product.

For the purposes of this standard, curtain walling is defined as an external vertical building enclosure produced byelements mainly of metal, timber or plastic.

Curtain walling embraces many different forms of construclion, but generally it comprises one ol the following: Stickconstruction, U nitised co nstruction, Spandrel construction.

1 Scope

This European Standard specilies characteristics of curtain walling and provides technical information on thevarying performance requirements which apply throughout Europe and the test criteria and sequence of testing towhich the product is subjected, in order to demonstrate conformity. Reference is made to other EuropeanStandards related to the performance and testing of curtain walling and, where appropriate, attention is drawn toEuropean Standards which relate to products incorporated into curtain walling.

This standard applies to curtain walling ranging lrom a vertical position to 15'from the vertical, onto the buildingface. lt can include elements of sloping glazing contained within the curtain wall.

Curtain walling is not a product which can be completed in all respects within a manufacturing area, but is a seriesol components and/or prelabricated units which only become a finished product when assembled together on site.

This standard is applicable to the whole of the curtain walling, including the flashings, closures and copings.

2 Normative references

This European Standard incorporates by dated or undated reference, provisions from other publications. Thesenormative references are cited at the appropriate places in the text, and the publicationS are listed hereafter. Fordated references, subsequent amendments to or revisions of any of these publications apply to this EuropeanStandard only when incorporated in it by amendment or revision. For undated references the latest edition of thepublication referred to applies (including amendments).

Annex A(normative)

Equipotentiality test

A1 General requirements

The curtain wall shall be so designed as to have its metalframing components conductively connected, such that allvertical and horizontalframing members and arry metalfaced infill panels and similar components achieve anequipotential bond which, in turn can be bonded back to the nearest ring of the earth circuit of the building.

Suitable precar.rtions shall be taken in effecting the equipotential connections to avoid corrosion which might hindertheir efficiency. Fittings shall be resistant to corrosive agencies (atmospheric, chemical and electrolytic corrosion) orbe otherwise suitably protected.

The electrical resistance of the curtain wall components forming the circuit shall not exceed 10 O (a resistancebelow 10 ohms reduces the risk of side-flashing).

L2 Gonnectors

Component connections shall be achieved by metal connectors providing the following minimum cross-sectionalareas.

Copper 16 mml Aluminium 32mm2Gatuanised steel 25 mmz

NOTE Stranded connectors are not normally used for earth bonding.

Multi-connectors may be utilized (e.9. bolts) to achieve the cross-sectional areas required.

A"3 Test procedure

The electrical resistance of lhe curtain walling and its bond to the earth circuit of the building slnll be measured ineach floor with a portable resistance meter, able to make measurements from (0lo 500) ohms in two ranges: (0 to50) O and (0 to 500) 0.

NoTE The test should not be carried out following conditions which have left the curtain wall surface, either partially or totally, (in a wet state, since the results may well be atfected. I

L4 Test report

The report shall be completed to include all of the identifying inlormation required in other test documentation andshall clearly designate the positions on the facade where tests were made, with appropriate drawings wherenecessary.
