The late Clifford A. Phaneuf, was
a Springfield teacher, who played
an integral role in the development
of the Environmental Center for Our
Schools, known as ECOS.
In 1970, with the support of the
Springfield Park Department and
the School Department, ECOS
found its home in the former Porter
Lake skate house. It was the
ideal classroom setting, allowing
students to learn while exploring
750 acres of historical Forest Park.
Since its inception ECOS has
introduced thousands of Springfield
elementary and middle school
students to the critical role they play
in preserving our environment.
Phaneuf shared a vision to protect
the future of our world. He was
Director of the ECOS program for
17 years. His dedication helped
the vision become a reality-for the
benefit of many.

ECOS continues to live up to its mission set forth over 40 years ago.
Today marks the occasion that will preserve the legacy for future
generations. It is a testament to the core principles of ECOS—fulfilling
our obligation to preserve the environment.
New ECOS improvements include:
• increased classroom space
• conversion to natural gas
• new HVAC system
• removal of septic system
• kitchen space
• new electrical system
• future solar capacity
• improved outdoor classroom space
• life safety equipment, and
• landscape improvements
