Fern and Fly, Bouillon, Chain, and Cast On knots are some of the stitches you will learn. Come join the fun and create your own happy little hummingbird!

Market PartyFriday, June 15th and Saturday, June 16th 10:00am – 5:00pm

I’ve never found going to the market all that much fun – the grocery market that is… Quilt Market is another story entirely!!! There the aisles are lined with all the latest the quilt world has to offer and we get to shop for you. We will gather new fabrics, notions, books, patterns and most importantly ideas. We’ll return to Quilters Corner and spend several weeks getting samples and demonstrations ready to share. On the 15th and 16th you’ll find new models and displays, but more importantly demonstrations of new tech-niques will be offered at 11:00am and repeated at 1:00pm on both days. A special pattern sheet to show off the new little fabric samples, that are our gift to you, will round out the day – why not join the enthusiastic crowd?!

Sometimes a reference for an old favorite is the most valuable reference. Log Cabins, from House of White Birches, includes information for 7 different techniques for piecing the time-less pattern. Instructions for each process are followed by a vibrant example of that method. Some of the designs are very regimented, but they “loosen up” as you travel through the book. The project notes that begin each pattern are followed by complete materials lists and bold color graphics illustrating each step. From Lights in the Cabin to Carved in Stone – I want to make them all! This is a very reasonably priced reference. Book $19.95

Drawing Freehand FeathersJane ZowackiSkill level: AllAugust 16 Thursday ~ 6:30pm – 8:30pm

Beautiful hand quilted feathers can really make a quilt. But what do you do if you can’t find a stencil that is the right size or shape? Well…you draw one. It isn’t hard to do and it is a lot of fun! Once you know some little tips and hints you will be amazed at the beautiful feathers that you can draw. We will also discuss border designs and marking tools. You don’t have to be an artist. Really!

Fee: $18.00

For the past several years we have enjoyed stitching pillowcases to brighten the rooms of young cancer patients. Sadly, the need for these cheerful accents continues to grow. After a good deal of discussion several years back, we decided the best way to encour-age lots of stitching was with a good old fashioned pillowcase race. Don’t worry there is no jumping required – just stitching. Construct pillowcases that you think young patients would love, bring them to the shop during the race so everyone can watch your race lane fill! If pillowcase making is a new endeavor, ask at the counter for a quick demonstration of the method we use – slick to say the least! There are small prizes for those creating the most and for the staff favorites in both team and individual categories. Warm up your machine and commence stitching, because we all know the real winners are the young people whose day will be bright-ened by your creations!

Quick Clothesline Carry-AllLaura SolesSkill level: IntermediateJune 16 and 30 Saturday ~ 12:00pm – 2:00pm

Indygo Junction came up with a great design for “Quick Clothesline Carry-Alls”. Most of Laura’s previous clothesline proj-ects have the raw edge showing on the outside of the baskets. That’s not the case with this bag. The fabric strips are folded over the clothesline, creating a neat finish on the outside of the bag. It also creates a very sturdy, lined carry-all. The approximate size of the bag is 10” x 11” x 8”. Check out Laura’s sample; she added some fun beadwork to her bag.

Fee: $25.75 (includes $9.99 pattern)

Serenity Shoulder BagSue BlayneySkill level: IntermediateJuly 7 and 14 Saturday ~ 11:00am – 1:30pm

Sue was struck by the simple elegance of the Serenity Shoul-der Bag. Texture Magic is the secret to the marvelous flap detail. Sue showcases the newest Lonni Rossi fabric collection in her sample. Your version of this fun bag will be just as wonderful no matter which favorite fabric you feature!

Fee: $26.50 (includes $9.00 pattern)

Fabric PotteryLaura SolesSkill level: IntermediateJuly 14 Saturday ~ 12:00pm – 4:00pm

Instead of using clay and a kiln to make pottery, how about using clothesline and fabric? When Laura found the book Sewing Pottery by Machine, her first reaction was “why didn’t I think of that”, and second was to “fire up” her sewing machine. A week later Laura added three new pieces to her pottery collection. She also had a lot of fun watching friends try to figure out how the fabric pots went together. No, super glue was not used and no, it’s not magic. The new technique involves a very clever way of joining fabric covered clothesline coils together. In class we’ll work on a pot similar to Laura’s orange sample. And by the end of the lesson, you’ll be on your way to finishing your first piece of fabric pottery.

Fee: $42.50 (includes $22.99 book)

New batiks always inspire new projects in the shop. Some projects are fairly complex to use the hand printed textiles to their best advantage, while others are quite simple for the exact same reason!

Bali Fever is brand new from Judy Niemeyer. The foundation pieced extravaganza features luscious Hoffman batiks. The subtle shading behind the skinny compass points is achieved with the help of Hoffman’s Bali Pops. We ordered several different shades of the 2 ½” strip sets, but they disappeared before the pattern arrived! You must have had lots of other ideas for using them… As always, Judy’s pattern includes all the paper pieces to create the 67” x 80” quilt. Her comprehensive directions begin with fabric selection guide-lines, proceed through laying out the fabrics and precutting and then move through all the piecing directions for each section needed for the quilt. Her foundation technique is incredibly accurate and the amazing results she garners will inspire you to make this masterpiece for your collection. Pattern $30.00

I just noticed another Judy Niemeyer pattern you might enjoy making. The particulars of Golden Harvest are much the same – glorious design, foundation pieced – but it is smaller in size (54” x 54”). Even so, it will still be an impressive addition to your home. Pattern $20.00

Long Tall SallyLaura SolesSkill level: BeginnerAugust 11 Saturday ~ 12:00pm – 4:00pm

Laura was intrigued by the inter-locking design in Miss Rosie’s Quilt Company pattern “Long Tall Sally”. And you’re not going to believe how easy this quilt is to sew. It’s made up of one rectangular block and has no borders! The pattern includes two different block sizes. And since the blocks are skinny and long, it’s easy to change the size of the quilt. Laura used the larger of the two blocks in her sample wall hanging. And, of course, it’s made with our bright batik fabrics. Laura’s favorite! FYI - her sample wall hanging isn’t quilted, as it will be growing into a king size bed quilt – later this year.

Fee: $31.75 (includes $8.50 pattern)

Looking BackDeb SkundrichSkill level: AllAugust 18 and 25 Saturday ~ 1:00pm – 3:00pm

Once again, a quilt from Material Obsession 2 has captured our hearts. This is a quilt for everyone. A little piecing, some easier appliqué, and presto! – a wonderful lap quilt or wall hanging. So join us as we once again explore the works of this fabulous designer.

Women of CourageThis is a twelve-month block-of-the-month series honoring women throughout histo-

ry who have led courageous lives. Many of the women you will know, but others you may “meet” for the first time in the biographies that accompany the patterns. The quilt will be made with a historically inspired cream, red, rose, brown and blue textile collection from Windham Fabrics. Your finished quilt will measure 98” x 98”. Kits will include patterns and all the fabrics required for the quilt top and binding.

Monthly Kit - $14.50 to $50.50 (kit prices are determined by the fabric required for each step in the project – some months contain supplies for two blocks, others include fabrics for setting or borders and binding - a list of the prices for the year may be requested when you register for the project)

New Block-of-the-Month projects! We know you enjoy creating spectacular quilts “little by little”. Probably, because like us, you have dis-

The 86” x 86” design includes twelve pieced sampler blocks, each with a Nine Patch “twist”, Nine Patch setting blocks and a foundation pieced poinsettia center medallion. Our quilt will be worked in slightly darker shades (we just couldn’t resist adding the new Little Gath-erings fabrics to the mix), but will retain the rich variety of pattern found in the original quilt. The quilt will be offered in a series of six kits. Each kit will contain the block piecing fabrics and any instructions and tips our sample maker feels you might find helpful. You will add the setting fabrics (cream background, foundation and border fabrics – in July we will display several options for these parts of the quilt). If foundation piecing is new to you, or you could use more information about the technique, consider registering for the free foundation-piecing workshop being offered Saturday September 8th for those registered for this Block-of-the-Month program.

Monthly kits $9.95 (each includes fabric for two sampler blocks), Book $25.95 (includes patterns for the project, additional projects and wonderful stories about Christmases past)

I have yet to quilt the top (I think it may need some hand stitching, maybe even the util-ity stitches Sue is sharing during her upcoming class), but I can hardly wait to begin another in the series! We have marked these kits at a special price for a limited time – they are currently being offered at 40% off their original prices. Stunning and great value – don’t miss out!

Petite Papillion Quilt

This small “shabby chic” style quilt finishes approximately 26 ¾” x 26 ¾”. It would make a wonderful signature quilt – have friends or party guests sign the small background rectangles (be sure to use permanent fabric marking pens in colors that compliment the colors in your fabrics so the signatures can be seen but do not overwhelm the piece).

Fabric requirements ~One charm packBackground – 1/4 yard (some of the light charms from the stack were also used to add more variety)Setting squares and triangles – 1/2 yardInner border – 1/4 yardOuter border – 1/3 yardBinding – 1/4 yardBacking – 1 yard

I rounded the corner in the shop pastel section and ran right into a beautiful group of fabrics that I had completely missed. After several more passes I realized Papillion would be perfect for a small quilt made with a charm pack. Working with the math for a bit led to the 3” x 3” finished blocks you find in this project. With the addition of background fabric each carefully cut charm will yield the pieces for two blocks. An “on point” setting and two borders add the finishing touches.

It always seems to take so long to get it on properly… Maybe it’s time to learn a method that is worked completely by machine? Not only is this method fast, it adds a tiny sliver of an accent color to the edge of your quilt. Bring a small quilted piece to class and you will be almost done when you leave!

Culture ClubMay 24 and August 30

Thursday ~ 7:00pmProjects featured in current Culture Club sessions are inspired by the elegant

patterns and textures of India. Designer Leesa Chandler intends that you experi-ence the flavor or the country by stitching a variety of novel projects. Her exquisite Indian inspired fabrics will next grace a quilt and travel tote – both projects will be shared at the meeting, along with recipes and member show and tell.Fee: $5.00 per meeting (includes club patterns!)

Barb and FriendsJune 7, July 12, August 2 and September 6

Thursday ~ 7:00pmBarb and her group are only a few steps into their newest project. You still have

time to catch up with the lovely blocks being made for the Ginger Rose sampler by Bee Creative studio. A series of eight sessions will give you all the information you need to construct the quilt and some exceptional additional projects as well. The group shares projects they have made, lots of laughs and there is a rumor of food each meeting too – no wonder the crowd continues to grow – Barb would love to welcome you!

Fee: $6.00 per meeting (includes club patterns)

Stash ManagementMay 26, June 30 and August 25

Saturday ~ 10:15am It is hard to believe that another series of Stash Management sessions is coming

to an end – there are still so many sewing areas left to organize! At each meeting we share projects created with the fabrics in our collection, ideas for organizing the creative clutter that magically appears as we stitch, and a new pattern to help cut into the wonderful fabric we have accumulated over the years. Members who missed the April meeting (don’t you just hate when there is a conflict?) will want to prepare for next time. You are to take a critical look at your pattern collection to determine which patterns are of the greatest value to you at the moment (usually only about 20% of the total!). Those patterns should be stored where they can inspire new projects and the rest are to be put away (as in boxed up and put in storage!). Also, you are to bring ½ yard of a fabric that you no longer find exciting. Bring the piece in a paper bag for a seriously silly swap. Great fun with great results – you might want to squeeze in! Fee: $10.00 for all remaining meetings in this series, which ends in August

Traditionally the cutting for this quilt was the hard part – no more! After cutting we will begin piecing the lap size quilt - focusing on motif place-ment and sewing accuracy.

This way you will have lots of time to make holiday gifts. These intricate looking ornaments are a lot easier to make than you may think. Bits and pieces of fabric become the focal point of these unique decorations. Join us to begin your Christ-mas preparations in August!

Renee Nanneman, known for pretty softly colored floral fabric collections with a historic textile influence, has been at it again. Her Bella Bliss currently graces the table to the left as

you enter the shop. The Andover fabrics feature tan, red, rose and green flowers, stripes and checks. They proved irresist-ible when we were shown the samples months ago. it was easy to imagine them added to the historic pieces already in our collection and to “see” them used in our favorite patterns. We weren’t the only ones to love the color combi-nation. A Mother’s Love (a wonderful project for May!) by Lori Smith combines piecing and a little appliqué in the exact palette Renee picked for Bella Bliss. Lori designed the 73 ¼” x 73 ¼” medallion sampler for her daughter – it could just as easily be a special gift for your mother!

Mirror Mirror shows off a range of batik fat quarters in related colors. The pattern front shows the quilt in cool greens and blues, but warm reds and oranges would be just as lovely. After you have gathered fat quarters for the size you wish to create (baby, throw, twin, queen and king can be found in the directions) they will be stacked and cut according to the cutting diagram. The designer recommends avoiding directional fabric as the prints will be flipped in different directions in the blocks and you might find the variety distracting. The cut fabrics are then sewn in sets, sub-cut and stitched into the asymmetrical blocks. Several different layout options are shared in the pattern – your quilt will look dras-tically different depending on which you select. This simple to make quilt is certain to become a favorite – fun to stitch and fun to give as a gift. Pattern $9.00

Moda has become a supporter of numerous charitable efforts through the production of a steady stream of Collection for the Cause fabric groups. Friend-ship, ninth in the series, benefits Feeding America whose mission is to feed America’s hungry through a nationwide network of member food banks and to engage the country in the fight to end hunger. Moda makes it incredibly easy to support each group, as each fabric collection includes a range of tempting historic style prints and is offered as both yardage and in their special cuts. Friendship features bright red prints accented with teal and brown. Dark beige background prints round out the group. It is easy to visualize pieced quilts made up of the striking cloth, but Moda had an appliqué project in mind for you. The Friendship quilt is made up of twenty-five appliquéd (11” square) red motifs. The outer curves of the design are fairly gentle, good for practicing your technique, while the interiors are accented with a little reverse appliqué. The 78” x 78” quilt is going to look fantastic in your home! Fabric: $10.99 per yard, charm squares $9.50 per pack, pattern $6.00 or free with the purchase of fabric from the Friend-ship collection (while supplies last)

If you could use another appliqué project consider one of the newest Kansas City Star publications. Pretty Petals is bursting with the colorful artwork of Sheri Howard. The designs evolved from sketches she did while traveling. The sketches then translated into flowers in a most fanciful garden. Shari wanted to make the quilt in colors that were cheerful and bright, those of her childhood art classes (Crayola and Prang revisited!). She worked her blocks by machine, but the large bold shapes could easily be done by hand. As I began reading the book I kept thinking how wonderful it would be to see a lone design repeated four times to make a single large statement. I needed to make it to page 46 to see Shari’s take on the concept – each flower repeated as a kaleidoscope! Three additional projects compliment the 88” x 112” quilt – enough to keep you stitching on rainy days this summer, or when you just can’t stand to pull another weed! Book $25.95

Have you amassed a collection Jelly Rolls and other 2 ½” strip sets? Are you looking for a new pattern to show off your favorite set? Four Square may be just what you are seeking. Half Log Cabin blocks, in a very controlled palette, are used in sets of four in this novel design. You begin construction by cutting the assorted strips to the lengths indicated in the text and illustrated in the drawing. By cutting them to the proper length and sewing with an accurate seam allowance you are far more likely to wind up with consistently sized Log Cabin squares. Directions are given for throw, long twin and king sized versions of the quilt. The colors you select will determine whether your quilt is a country style or completely modern accent piece. Pattern $8.00

Dates to Remember

Any pattern company whose motto is “Life is hard. Sewing is easy.” is worth a look! When you look and find the Apples and Oranges Sewing Kit you just have to start stitching! The fruity sewing kits are so yummy you might be tempted to take a bite, but they are actually meant to sit at your side while you stitch. You will need to gather assorted pieces of red or orange fabric, a zipper, a bit of batting, stuffing and thread for a little hand or machine embroidery to get started. The full size pattern pieces have been printed so they can be cut out and pinned to your fabrics to make cutting simple (I wanted to keep the pattern sheet whole so I traced them on to freezer paper, ironed them to the top layer of my fabric stacks, cut and then pulled the paper off). The directions are very well written and illustrated at every step. Be careful to use the 3/8” seam allowances noted in the “important stuff” section or you may have trouble getting every-thing to match up. You would think putting a zipper in the pouch half of your fruit would be difficult, but even that step proves painless when done according to the directions. I’m thinking of packing my adorable “little snack” – it’s sure to turn some heads and start some conversation - when I begin stitching on the plane! Pattern $8.95

We would like to offer you a chance to win a fabric kit for the apple sewing kit. Next time you visit add your name to the basket at the front counter (or drop a note in the mail asking to be included)– we will pick a name on May 26th – maybe you will be the winner of the “tasty” little treat!

If you want feminine, but not flouncy, there is a new line that will have you dancing. Two To Tango is a fun, bold collection sporting images of butterflies, graphic flowers and simple stripes and polka dots. Black, white and gray prints with pops of cherry bring a funky, fresh feel to this artsy new group – sure to inspire some fierce projects! $10.60 per yard

Special prize drawing ~As I was trying to figure out what fabrics to use for some of my favorite new patterns

I came across a narrow long length of cream colored Moda marble. I’m not certain if it was left over from making a quilt back or maybe from cutting backgrounds for a whole series of appliqué blocks. In either case, I put it to great use. It became the background for three projects (and I used every last bit, which will make the Stash Management members in the crowd proud of me!). I realized that you might find a “stash” of this fabric both valuable and versatile. When you stop in the shop to look at the newest class samples, fabrics, books and patterns be sure to fill out an entry for our Marble Lovers Contest. The winner of the June 2nd drawing will win an entire bolt of cream Moda Marble – just think of all the projects you could finish with an entire bolt!!!
