New Heights Project ExhibitOpening April 4 Free with Gardens Admission

Uncover the history and vision behind New Heights: The Fountain Revitalization Project. Located on the Conservatory Terrace, this open air exhibit overlooks the project site and explores the rich history, cutting-edge technology, inspiring horticulture, and architecture that bring new life to our beloved Main Fountain Garden. Follow the largest project in our history as we preserve the vision of our founder, Pierre S. du Pont, and elevate one of Longwood’s most significant Gardens to new heights.

After every bulb was placed, our gardeners (with the help of students and volunteers) planted each bulb by hand, and averaged about 18,000 bulbs per day. With 100 varieties of tulips showcased in the display, many of the varieties are excellent for the home garden. The varieties planted are examples of popular classifications of tulips including; Double Late, Parrot, Fringed, Double, Lily-flowered, Darwin Hybrid, Fosteriana, Greig, Viridiflora and Triumph.

Flower Garden Drive Spring Highlights

(3) In spring, our Flower Garden Drive bursts with vibrant color. Featuring a formal display of more than 20,000 flowers, bulbs planted in October bloom against a backdrop of dark green hedges that border the 600 foot walkway of the Flower Garden Drive. While this formal garden display is quite large, the design is elegantly simple. This year it is planted with an assortment of 15,000 Hyacinthoides hispanica ‘Excelsior’ (Spanish bluebells), 2,000 blue and white Hyacinthus orientalis (hyacinths), and 4,000 daffodils (Narcissus ‘Bridal Crown’ and Narcissus ‘Cheerfulness’). Spring turns the Flower Garden Drive into a spectrum of spring colors beckoning guests to venture farther into the Gardens where the Large and Small Lake, Peirce’s Woods, and Italian Water Garden await.

Highlights fromOur GardensMeadow Garden’s First Spring

(1) Flowering trees, buzzing bees, and wandering wildlife bring our Meadow Garden to life this spring. Explore breathtaking views of the Meadow’s maturing landscape and witness the first signs of spring as flowering dogwood, fringe-tree, Eastern redbud, and serviceberry provide beautiful blooms along the forest edge. See the colorful native spring ephemerals including Claytonia virginica (Virginia spring-beauty), Mertensia virginica (Virginia bluebells), and Geranium maculatum (wild geranium) emerge from the forest floor. Careful observers will see how the Meadow’s native trees, grasses, and plantings support a wealth of insects, birds, and wildlife. Mason bees are some of the first active insects and get an early start pollinating the flowering trees. As you venture through, keep an eye out for our resident foxes and their kits romping in grasses and watch as tree swallows fly overhead on the return home from their winter nesting grounds. Plan a visit to our Meadow Garden this season and experience the excitement of springtime like never before.

A New Idea In Our Idea Garden

(2) The Idea Garden showcases beds blooming with innovative pairings of colors, textures, and plant varieties that can be reliably grown in our region. Throughout the month of April, the Idea Garden is a must-visit destination where guests can view an estimated 62,000 bulbs bursting into bloom. This year’s display features our most vibrant color palette ever, and a new spiral planting design. To achieve the new spiral design our Gardeners had to carefully mark the shape of the planting pattern in the

Celebrate National Public Gardens Day in America's Garden Capital

With more than 30 public gardens, arboreta, and historic landscapes all located within 30 miles, the Greater Philadelphia region has more gardens in close proximity than anywhere else on the continent! Go behind-the-scenes to explore our Production Greenhouse and learn about our growing and display techniques. Visitors can also enjoy a “Make A Garden Memory” activity and learn first-hand from our staff how we care for our Green Wall, the largest green wall in America.

Student Exhibition Garden Opens May 15

Each year our Student Exhibition Garden features four different displays designed and installed by Longwood’s senior Professional Gardener Students. Comprising the students’ creativity, skills, and horticultural knowledge, this garden showcases all that they have learned throughout the two-year program. The planning for the Student Exhibition Garden begins during the students’ Landscape Design class. Given specific budget, theme, and design parameters, each student develops potential designs for the four areas of the Student Exhibition Garden. After a series of formal presentations, four designs are selected and the students work in pairs to execute each plan. This year, the student displays are inspired by special programs happening in our Gardens including Summer Spectacular, the Main Fountain Garden Revitalization Project, and our new summer exhibit Nightscape: A Light and Sound Experience. Several large structures are also incorporated into the garden designs including a welded metal tree and a series of hand-crafted archways. See the Professional Gardener students’ creative and inspiring displays in the Student Exhibition Garden, on view May 15 through mid-October.

Friendly Staff Competition In The Trial Garden

Each year Longwood showcases our plant evaluation processes in our Trial Garden. As we put new cultivars to the test, we give visitors the opportunity to vote for their favorites. After tallying results, only the top performing plants are considered for use in our future displays. Beginning Memorial Day weekend, this year’s Trial Garden explores seasonal plant combinations to determine what grouping of plants are the most visually appealing. This year, for the first time, our Trial Garden hosts a friendly competition among our staff as a total of 17 individuals and teams across our Horticulture and Education Departments compete for the most appealing seasonal plant combination. Given a pallet of 168 plant varieties, each competitor chooses up to eight plants for their Trial Garden display. Staff then name their plot and determine the percentage of each plant within the mix. For example one plant combination, titled Orange Crush, features 50% Calibrachoa ‘USCALI411-7’ Superbells® Dreamsicle, 20% Dahlia ‘Yellow Hammer’, and 30% Oryza sativa ‘Black Madras’. July through September guests will have the opportunity to vote for their favorite plant combination. The ultimate winner will be announced in October.

Earlier in the year we invited you to join us in reading two books, Braiding Sweetgrass: Indigenous Wisdom, Scientific Knowledge, and the Teachings of Plants by Robin Kimmerer and our children’s title, The Great Kapok Tree by Lynne Cherry. Together with local libraries and community partners, we explore the books’ ideas about the importance of our relationship with plants, Native American culture and storytelling, and the science of botany.

Our beauty doesn’t set with the sun. This summer, get ready for a world you could only imagine. Nightscape: A Light and Sound Experience by Philadelphia artists Klip Collective, takes you on an evening journey with moving imagery and light set to original music, brought to life by the natural canvas of our landscape. Before or after you experience the exhibit, visit our new Beer Garden, open only during Nightscape. Enjoy German-style fare, try our new Longwood signature brew, and sit with friends and family under the stars.

Member Reservations As a Member benefit, admission to Nightscape is free. Members may visit the exhibit any time, but all Members (adults and children) require free reservations. Additional Guests not included in Membership require a ticket to view Nightscape. To preserve this special benefit for all of our Members, we ask that you only make reservations for dates you plan to attend. Without a reservation, the Gardens will close at 6 pm to Members. Chimes Tower Members and those included in their Membership Level do not require reservations to experience Nightscape.

For Your ConvenienceLongwood Gardens covers many acres. There are no shuttles within the Gardens. We’re happy to offer the following:

– Non-motorized wheelchairs, electric scooters, and children’s strollers are available on a first- come basis for a fee. Supply limited, reservations not accepted.

– Rentals are free for Members, but Member guests will be charged a fee.

– Scooters are not available during rainy, snowy, or freezing weather.
