Rugby 1st XV

Back Row L-R: Mr Leonard, Terry McCroakam, Brian Ardron, Norman Yates, Riding C., Michael Downes, Geoffrey Marston, Mr. Hamilton Front Row L-R: Ronald Smethurst, Don Maltby, William Greasley, Christopher Butcher, Walter Hebden, Terry Dillon, Trevor Trueman, William Baxendale, Brian Moore 1st XV.

This year, although the 1st XV has not had an excellent season, it has been fairly successful. The weather has led to the

cancellation of five fixtures. There were odd occasions when a bit more ‘devil’ might have come from the pack, but, on the whole, the side has played quite well as a team, and not, thank goodness, as a set of individuals. Although some of the lads went to the Yorkshire Trials at Christmas, no one was fortunate enough to obtain his place in the County Team. For the statistically minded:- Team P W L D 1st XV 14 9 5 0

2nd XV 12 3 7 2

Colts XV 9 9 0 0 Under 14 XV 4 3 1 0 Junior XV 5 2 3 0

The 2nd

The under 14 XV has won the majority of its matches, whilst the Junior XV has not been quite so successful, having only two victories from five matches. In these two sides we have a few good youngsters, who, we hope, will show the same interest when they reach the senior part of the School. Once again, thanks go to Mr. Rhodes, for his wonderful work on the pitches, thus producing the standard we have come to expect at Hemsworth Grammar School. Thanks also to the kitchen staff for devoting its time to the teams on Saturday mornings. Finally, on behalf of all the teams, we would like Messrs. Leonard, Taylor, Swinbank, and Colley, to know that their interest on the field is greatly appreciated.

Baxendale, Walter Hebden, Don Weaver, Brian Moore, Roland Hawcroft Once again we have had a very successful season. The disadvantage of having no reliable spin bowlers was offset by the improved fielding of the 1

st XI, the most outstanding fielder being McCroakam. The team was composed almost entirely of all-

round cricketers and had eight potential bowlers in the side. Noticeable were the all-round performances of Tickle, Yates, Boycott, Moore and Hebden. Out of the 10 games played, 6 were won, 2 were drawn and 2 were lost. I would like to thank Hambleton for his unfailing support as twelfth man, Butcher for his work as scorer and Mr. Rhodes for his care of the pitches.

Cricket Second Team

Back Row L-R: David Sumnall, Alan Buckroyd, Roy Homer, Peter Hardy Front Row L-R: Fleet W., Michael Copley, Alan Vest, Don Maltby, Kenneth Bramham, Peter Donaldson, Barry Longden The Second XI has not been so successful, having won 1, lost 2 and drawn 1. This is partly due to the fact that the committee has been experimenting with new players with an eye to future first teams.

Back row L-R: Peter Sell, Roy Mason, Mr. Stewart, Colin Hellewell, John Mansfield, Colin Moxon Front row L-R: John Sudworth, Frank Morley, David Sumnall, Malcolm Halstead, Peter Hardy, John Lamprey, Geoff Trueman The Colts XI won 2, drew 1 and lost 3 of their 6 games but each match provided entertaining cricket with close finishes. Sumnall and Hardy, Captain and Vice-Captain respectively were the most reliable batsmen and Mason, Hellewell and Hardy the most successful bowlers. Keenness was shown by many boys and there was always competition for places in the team.

Athletics The Guest of Honour for this year’s Sports Day was Mrs. A. B. Clegg, wife of the Chief Education Officer. As the result of the fine organisation of Miss. Parkin and Mr. Leonard, the Sports ran smoothly, and fine weather helped to make it a most successful day. This year the Championship and Relay cups were won by Price House and the Standards Cup was won by Talbot House. The Victrices Ludorum were Patricia Brooke (Junior) and Iris Turner (Senior) and the Victores Ludorum were Colin Hellewell (Junior) and Brian Moore (Senior). Lowe won the Mile Cup and Moore won the Senior Half Mile Plaque. The Intermediate Half Mile Cup was won by Mansfield. A feature of this year’s Sports Day was the number of records broken - fifteen in all. Some of these were recent innovations to the programme but notable record performances in well established events were:- V. Manning Senior Girls’ Discus 80 ft. 3 ins. E. Hirst Senior Girls’ Shot 28 ft. 4 ins. I. Street Inter Girls’ 220 yards 29.3 secs. Moore, B. Senior Boys’ 440 yards 53.6 secs. Moore, B. Senior Boys’ 880 yards 2 mins. 10.3 secs. Snookes, M.
