Judging Criteria8th Annual USF Young Innovator
Preliminary judging takes place in two stages: (1) hundreds of entries are filtered down into the top fifty (50) on February 1, 2016; and (2) the top ten (10) finalists are selected on February 3, 2016. This preliminary judging emphasizes the following four (4) factors:
1. Creativity and originality of the entry;
2. Quality and persuasiveness the entry;
3. Benefit to the public; and
4. Marketability of the invention.
Finalist judging takes place on February 11, 2016 before a live panel of judges at the University of South Florida. In addition to the four factors above, live judging places emphasis on:
1. Prototypes and/or demonstrations;
2. Delivery of the sales pitch; and3. Ability to answer questions from judges.

Frequently Asked Questions8th Annual USF Young Innovator
Q: Do I need to build a prototype? Prototypes are not necessary for the initial submission, however,
finalists are encouraged to build a prototype or presentation to explain their invention to the judging
panel.
Q. Who owns the intellectual property rights to submissions? There is no transfer of intellectual
property rights of inventions submitted. Participants continue to "own" their inventions. However,
participants do authorize the reproduction of the contest entry forms for promotion of the event and
evaluation by judges.
Q: Can I turn in a previous assignment or science fair experiment? Yes, provided the assignment
or science fair experiment is less than one year old as of February 1, 2016.
Q: Can kids submit a project together, as a two-person team? Unfortunately, no. All submissions
must be made individually for the purposes of this contest.
Q: What are the finalist awarded? The top fifty (50) entries
receive medals. Out of the top ten (10) finalists, the grand

Educator IncentivesIntegrating Innovation into the Curriculum
Q: Is innovation considered science, engineering, business, or communication?
A: Its considered all of the above. Conception of a new idea is creativity. Reduction to practice is engineering. Commercialization is business, communication, marketing and even artwork. Reading, writing, research, speaking and illustrating are fundamental skills of a successful innovator. Taking an idea and getting onto the store shelf is one of the most challenging, but exciting tasks in business.
Q: What are the advantages of having an entire class participate?
A: All participants receive a day pass to Tampa s Museum of Science and Industry (MOSI). Integrating the submission into your curriculum and having an entire class participate is like getting a free field trip to one of the largest and most exciting museums in the country. In addition, for every dollar of prize money awarded to winning students, another dollar is awarded to their respective school.
Q: I m buried in paperwork .how much work will this be?
A: The 2016 submission form is PDF-fillable or entirely online. Teachers can pre-fill out their school and contact information and then print out clean submission forms for the entire class. Completed forms may be mailed, uploaded or even faxed in prior to the January 29, 2016 deadline. Talk to any educator that has participated in the Young Innovator Program .its fun, inspiring and lets your students apply their creativity and skills in a new genre.
