Design:

The basic gearbox housing is of cubiod form for dimensional symmetry. All input and output sides have a register for central location.

The gearbox housing and bearing flanges are made from high qualitygrey cast iron and are machined on all sides with tapped mountingholes.

The use of robust roller bearings ensures a long operating life.

The modular design system allows designs with multi-shaft and take-offdrives with up to 6 shafts. The drive input is usually on shaft d1, butshaft d2 or d3 can also act as the driver.

Gearing:

The bevel gearboxes incorporate the Klingelnberg palloid-spiral gearing.

With the spiral tooth form and largearea of contact, high torques can be transmitted.

The bevel gear sets are made from high quality alloy steel, case hardened and

lapped in pairs.

With these features an optimum tooth contact pattern is achieved, together with very quiet running and good efficiency.

The smaller gear in a pair is often called the pinion; the larger, either the gear,

or the wheel.

Indentification of sides / direction of rotation:

Page 18: Spiral Bevel Gearboxes

SPIRAL BEVEL GEARBOX

Identification of sides / Direction of rotation:To describe and define a spiral bevel gearbox accurately, uniform standardsare required. The important points here are a way of identifying each side of a gearbox and the positions of the bevel gears, and clear definition of the directions of rotation.

Identification of sides:The sides of a spiral bevel-gearbox are identified with theletters A,B,C,D,E, and F. See previous drawing.Postitions of bevel gears. The bevel gears are positionedagainst sides C and A, and side C is defined as the input side. The output gear is positioned side A.

Directions of rotation:The direction of rotation of each shaft end is defined as though you werelooking from the outside at the shaft end. From this viewpoint thedirection of rotation is given as clockwise or counterclockwise.

Gear tooth quality:

1.) Principle: Install always according to correct fit of the flanks without considering whether the tooth ends are adjusted or not. 2.) Correct flank fit: in unloaded state: At the forward flank (v) : bearing face in the centre At the backward flank (r) : bearing face nearer to the large diameter. 3.) Motion of the flank fit: The greater the load the greater the displacements and deviations and the stronger the flank engagement will be displaced towards the small diameter. Consequently.: Weak supporting requires short bearing faces strongly inclined to the large diameter in unloaded state. Caution!Too short supporting faces reduce resistance and promote creation of noise! Consequently, not shorter than 50% of tooth length or reinforce supports. 4.) Testing of flank fit: Tooth flanks of the larger wheel to be coated with thick oil, have some revolutions in operation direction. The bearing faces will become visible as bright places. The twist side play ( tooth-play) may normally not exceed 0,15 to 0,20 mm

Input speed for spiral bevel gearbox:

The max. input speed of Spiral bevel gearboxes are dependent according to gearbox size, runtime and mounting position.

Short high speed up to 4500 rpm are possible according to gearbox size. At continous operation, revs higher than 3000 rpm, a bearing and heat calculation according to gearbox size should be done.

If mounting pos. C or D under, higher heat production happens because of the oil level as mounted all shafts horizontal.

Backlash:Backlash is the error in motion that occurs when gears change direction. It exists because there isalways some clearance between the trailing face of the driving tooth and the leading face of thetooth behind it on the driven gear, and that gap must be closed before force can be transferred in the new direction. The term "backlash" can also be used to refer to the size of the gap, not just the phenomenon itcauses; thus, one could speak of a pair of gears as having, for example, "0.1 mm of backlash." A pair of gears could be designed to have zero backlash, but this would presuppose perfection in manufacturing, uniform thermal expansion characteristics throughout the system, and no lubricant. Therefore, gear pairs are designed to have some backlash. It is usually provided by reducing the tooth thickness of each gear by half the desired gap distance. In the case of a large gear and a small pinion, however, the backlash is usually taken entirely off the gear and the pinion is given full sized teeth. Backlash can also be provided by moving the gearsfarther apart. For situations, such as instrumentation and control, where precision is important, backlash can be minimised through one of several techniques. For instance, the gear can be splitalong a plane perpendicular to the axis, one half fixed to the shaft in the usual manner, the otherhalf placed alongside it, free to rotate about the shaft, but with springs between the two halvesproviding relative torque between them, so that one achieves, in effect, a single gear withexpanding teeth. Another method involves tapering the teeth in the axial direction and providing forthe gear to be slid in the axial direction to take up slack.

Backlash:

Vogel has 3 quality standards.

Quality 10 arcmin. standard

Quality 7 arcmin. low backlash gears are sized and lapped in pairs

Quality 4 arcmin. low backlash ZPG zyclo palloid fine grind

For low backlash gearboxes 7 and 4 arcmin we have to charge a higher price. The price is depended on number of pieces. Please enquire.

All of our gearboxes will be measured for backlash with 2% of the nominal output torque
