Aims:By the end of this session, you will:
• Understand what is happening at Prior
Weston for the teaching of spelling,
punctuation and grammar
• Understand the expectations for years 1
and 2
• Gain information about the KS1 SATS test
• Get helpful tips for home
• Have the chance to ask questions
What is SPaG?
Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar
When we study grammar, we study the rules
about how words change their form and
combine with other words to make sentences.
Now tested separately in Year 2 as part of the
end of KS1 assessments (SATs).
Children learn grammar best through every
day interactions and reading.
How do we teach grammar at
Prior Weston?
• Planned from National Curriculum
expectations
• Incorporated into daily English lessons, linked
to the text being studied, so in context, eg. teaching command verbs through instructional writing
• Discrete sessions taught where necessary
using Nelson Grammar
• Additional grammar activities during guided
reading sessions to consolidate classroom
teaching

• Thirty minute sessions, three times a week
• Spelling homework issued each week based
on Y2 statutory spelling lists

Year 1
Pupils should be able to read a large number of different words
containing GPCs.
Year 2
The word-lists for year 2 is statutory. The lists are a mixture of
words pupils frequently use in their writing and those which they
often misspell.
Copies will be sent out via email.

To leave spaces between words
To use full stops and capital letters
To use a capital letters for proper nouns
To join sentences using ‘and’
To add question marks to questions
To use exclamation marks

To use full stops, capital letters, exclamation marks and
question marks.
To use apostrophes to mark where letters are missing in
spelling and to mark singular possession in nouns.
To use commas to separate items in a list
Selecting correct punctuation to end a sentence (. ? !
…).
Terminology for Children
Year 1
Preposition, conjunction, word family, prefix, clause,
subordinate clause, direct speech, consonant, consonant and
vowel letter, inverted commas (or ‘speech marks’)
Year 2As above, plus determiner, pronoun, possessive
pronoun, adverbial
We will email a pack with the list of grammar
terminology.
