Introduction Lenzing PlasticsLenzing Plastics is a specialized manufacturer of polyolefin and fluoropolymer products for over 40 years now. Main markets for all our products are insulation materials, cable industry, specialty packaging, technical textiles, functional textiles and medical applications.

Production of Lenzing Profilen® yarns and fibers startedover 2 decades ago, when first tests were carried out with theexceptional polymer PTFE. Fascinated by the properties andpossible applications of this raw material, processes for producing PTFE yarns, tapes and fibers were developed through continuous research work. Today we serve a very broad spectrum of applications and are still working to develop additional ones.We can categorize 3 main markets: technical textiles, cable industry and the focus of this brochure: functional textile and medical applications.

Through constant R&D we secure our business of tomorrow; additionally we are always willing to develop products on single customer request. We have a well equipped laboratory to start first testing also in lab scale quantities.

As our products are unique, using them sometimes requires special assistance; our sales force is trained and willing to support the customer in many technical questions concerning the use of Lenzing Profilen® yarns and fibers. We try our best to describe our products in all details, however the best way to understand it is often to touch and use our fibers. Therefore we are prepared to ship small sample cones quickly to all parts of the world.

Our prices are usually offered ex works Lenzing; however we can organize the transport of our goods even to the most exotic destinations worldwide.

PTFE is virtually chemically inert. Acids, alkalis, alcohols, even aqua regia cannot attack PTFE. The reason is that within the PTFE-molecule there is an extremely strong bond between the carbon– and the fluorine atoms which makes the molecule very inert. These bonds can only be broken by a few substances: PTFE swells reversibly from fluorinated carbons; it can only be destroyed by elementary alkali metals, e.g. sodium

PTFE is chemically inert

PTFE – master in chemistry and physics

Owing to their purity, all Lenzing Profilen® products possess the excellent chemical and physical properties which make PTFE unique:

PTFE has a very low friction coefficient. The sliding properties can be compared with wet ice on wet ice. Another characte-ristic of this plastic is the fact that the sliding friction is exactly equal to the static friction. This explains why the transition from stationary to sliding motion takes place without a jerk.

Extremely low friction coefficient

Hardly anything sticks to PTFE due to the high surface tension. All Lenzing Profilen® yarns and fibers are anti-adhesive, water- and dirt repellent.

Totally repellent

The polymer has a crystallite melting point of 327°C with long-term exposure values from minus 200°C up to +260°C . Short term temperature peaks up to 300°C are possible.

Temperature resistant

The „Limiting Oxygen Index“ (LOI) of PTFE is approximately 95% O2. If PTFE is subjected to a hot flame it disintegrates by glowing. PTFE is non-flammable.

Flammability

Lenzing Profilen® products are totally weather resistant. PTFE will neither rot nor degrade and is resistant to micro-organisms and pests.

Weather and UV resistant

Fibers and yarns of 100% PTFE (fully sintered) are ideally suited for the food and medical field. They have also been approved by the US FDA for these purposes.

Physiologically safe

PTFE is an excellent thermal and electrical insulator.

Total heat insulation

Lenzing Profilen® fibers and yarns are virtually indestructible in most applications - for a very long product service life.

No limit to the lifespan

Besides many technical applications and the cable industry we continue to grow in the field of medical and functional textiles with our Lenzing Profilen® PTFE yarns. The variety of applications within this business unit is still very broad, starting from yarns for surgical sutures and heart valve construction to

Surgical fabric constructions (Aortic stents, Heart valves, etc)Surgical meshes constructions (Inguinal hernia surgery, Laparoscopic repair of incisional hernia, etc)Surgical felts (Suture Pledgets, Anastomosis Buttress, Septal Plug, etc)Your idea?

The anti-adhesive property of a Lenzing Profilen® product prevents sticking of medical textiles with wounds and can beused in the inner body as well as for the use on the skin surface. Fluids can be drawn away from the body to ab- sorbent layers through the hydrophobic properties of the fiber. The smooth surface of Lenzing Profilen® products does not support the growth of bacteria. For these reasons Lenzing Profilen® fibers are preferred for manufacturing of surgical fabric structures, surgical meshes as well as for surgical felt implants.

Lowest friction coefficient (dry and wet!) guaranteeing best skin protectionCool and soft touch resulting in less heat buildingLow abrasion leading to a long lasting productSmooth fiber surface repelling dirt and bad smellYarns guaranteeing long term comfort on your skin

Some professions require heavy protective clothes. In case of emergency, fast action is necessary and firemen or soldiers need work wear which combines full protection and perfect comfort. Lenzing Profilen® yarns with extremely low friction coefficient support easy moving in heavy clothes and delaying abrasion of garments dramatically. Tried and tested garments made of spun yarns 30% Lenzing Profilen® and 70% other fibers (Aramid, Lenzing FR, etc.) are the ideal basis for protective and military comfort clothing as well as for comfort work wear.Already a small proportion of PTFE in the spun yarn (e.g. 30%, please refer to the graph given on page 10) reduces conside-rably the friction coefficient.

In bed linen, Lenzing Profilen® is used either as 100% PTFE or twisted with other yarns and is provided both in knitted andwoven fabric form. The soft, cool and slippery surface of Lenzing Profilen® is helping to reduce pressure ulcer (bedso-res, decubitus) and therefore positively supports the wellbeing of bedridden patients. Bed sheets made of PTFE find a place in hospitals, nursing homes and for home care.

Lenzing PROFILEN® Lenzing Profilen® for wound dressings

Lenzing Profilen® does not stick to wounds because of its hydrophobic properties, the smooth and slippery surface and the very low surface tension. The yarn is highly biocom-patible, is chemically inert and does not react with wound secretions. Therefore, PTFE is a perfect material in wound dressings for sensitive wounds. Lenzing Profilen® is able to shorten the healing process. You can use the PTFE yarn in space fabrics in combination with other materials and multiple layers and influence the moisture management if necessary.

Lenzing Profilen® 100% PTFE yarn in different sizes and qualities is a material with many outstanding properties that can be used for countless applications. We do not know all possible applications. Maybe you have an idea on something new?
