The History of Specialty Foley Catheters

InventedbyDr.FrederickE.B.Foleyasearlyasthe1930s,theindwellingballooncatheterwasco-manufacturedbytwocompanies,B.F.GoodrichandtheDavolRubberCompany.C.R.Bard,Inc.wasoneofthemaindistributorsforthespecialtycatheter.BardlateracquiredDavolRubberCompany,whichremainswithustodayastheDavolSurgicalDivision.

ThesecretsbehindtheFoleycatheterarehiddenwithinthewallsofBard’sfacilityinMoncksCorner,SouthCarolina,oneofBard’smanymanufacturingsites.ThemanufacturingfacilityistheonlyfacilityintheUnitedStatesthatformulatesitsownlatex.Thebuildingprocessisquitetediousandperfectingonecatheterrequiresover26hourswithatleast10handsskillfullydirectingittothefinish.Layersuponlayersoflatexaredippedtoensurequalityandpreciseness.Over80,000BardLatexFoleycathetersareproducedperday.

AFoleycatheterisahollowurinarydrainagetubethatisheldinthebladderbyasmall,water-inflatedballoon.Itisalsoknownasanindwellingcatheterdesignedtoremaininplaceovertime.

ThedifferencebetweenaFoleycatheterandastraightcatheteristheballoon.A“specialty”Foleycatheterisdeterminedbythetipconfiguration,numberoflumensorchannels,andthesizeoftheballoon.
