A MESSAGE FROM OUR STRONG START, GREAT FUTURE CO-CHAIRS AND PRESIDENT & CEO

We’re living through unparalleled times. The COVID-19 pandemic has been difficult for all of us. But for many vulnerable individuals and families across the GTA, it’s been much worse. Physical distancing and isolation have amplified disparities in our communities like never before. What all these challenges drive home is the importance of connection. Connection is profoundly human and at the heart of our communities. It’s the cornerstone of our Y, and it always will be.

It’s why we feel reenergized about our Strong Start, Great Future Capital Campaign to bring the Y’s places, programs, and supports to more communities across the GTA. While COVID has impacted the construction of our newest YMCA Centres of Community, we’re moving forward with each one while taking appropriate safety precautions. We believe the Vaughan Metropolitan Centre YMCA, The Steve & Sally Stavro Family YMCA, and the McDonald Family YMCA will be more important than ever when it comes to providing the wrap-around programs and supports individuals and families will need to recover and thrive.

The need for connection has motivated so many of you, who’ve reached out to ask how you can help. Your kindness and collective generosity has lifted our hearts. It’s been truly inspiring. In support of our Y-GTA COVID Response Fund, more than 500 donors (and counting!) have stepped up for our communities. Together, you’re allowing us to deliver a wide variety of programs and supports people need to maintain mental, social, and physical well-being. You’ve shown that hope and optimism can win the day. And that, like us, you also believe we can achieve a brighter, more resilient future where everyone gets a fair chance to shine.

Sincerely,

Y M C A O F G R E A T E R T O R O N T O 2

IMPACT IN THE COMMUNITY

• A first for the YMCA of Greater Toronto, at this new location we’ll offer people the opportunity to sign up for membership—and choose from our program offerings—in advance of opening so members can fully engage with their new Y as soon as doors open.

• Community members continue to join our mailing list, discovering what’s coming at their new Y. Young people are sharing a strong interest in volunteer opportunities.

• The general manager, Katie Lowe, is currently leading efforts to help us build a presence in Vaughan. For example, recently we held an online workout session on Canada Day, which encouraged local residents to join in and get moving.

• We’ve kept people physically moving through more than 100 hours of free Health & Fitness online classes—and counting—via our social media platforms like Facebook and YouTube.

• Youth are staying connected and engaged through a wide variety of virtual programming from Karate Leadership, Junior Lifeguard Club, Youth and Newcomer Leadership Development, and more.

• Starting in July 2020, we re-opened 150 YMCA Child Care Centres. Prior to that, the Y operated 14 Emergency Child Care locations for children of essential workers. We served 350 children safely, with no outbreaks.

• Starting in July 2020, we re-opened 21 YMCA Day Camps across the GTA, including at our YMCA Cedar Glen Outdoor Centre, YMCA Camp Pine Crest, and all YMCA Health & Fitness Centres.

• Our Health & Fitness YMCA Centres of Community are currently open for Day Camps, and acting as food donation processing centres. The rest of our Centres will re-open as part of the provincial government’s Stage 3 re-opening plans for the GTA. The Markham YMCA and Oshawa YMCA both opened on July 24, 2020.

• YMCA Cedar Glen is operating Day Camps and has been repurposed as food donation processing centre.

• At YMCA Pine Crest, overnight camping is cancelled for the summer, but cabins are being rented to families looking for an outdoor experience.

• And we successfully launched The Bright Spot—an online community for older adults—helping them overcome loneliness and isolation through connection and relevant programs and supports.

THE Y-GTA COVID RESPONSE FUNDOur staff have stepped up for our communities. Despite being distanced from each other, thanks to the Fund, we’ve been able to help people maintain physical, social, and mental well-being while experiencing a strong sense of connection. Thanks to the generosity of more than 500 donors, who have helped raise more than $1 million dollars, we’re currently offering the following programs and supports:

Y M C A O F G R E A T E R T O R O N T O 6

“I’m grateful the Y provided us with emergency child care—it meant I could fully focus on my work knowing my son was safe. Every parent deserves the peace of mind that YMCA Child Care provides.” —Beverley Biggs, Frontline Worker and YMCA Parent

“With The Bright Spot, I know I’m not alone; there are other people in the same boat as me, and that feeling helps.” —Virginia Grasby, YMCA Member

We want to extend our sincerest gratitude to longtime Y supporters, Lucy Lawlor and Richard Nesbitt, for establishing the Nesbitt-Lawlor Family Matching Grant, which matched each $1 dollar given, up to a total of $100,000 toward the Y-GTA COVID Response Fund.
