This year marks the 84th annual festival, so please join us as we celebrate “Berried Treasure” and recognize the way each individual in our city shines – in keeping with this year’s theme. The festival promises to be a shining example of fun, community and pageantry.

Marysville has so much to celebrate, as you’re sure to discover. We’re a welcoming and growing community that celebrates diversity among our many cultures, as well as the rich agricultural heritage that stems largely from Marysville’s most-famous fruit, the strawberry.

The Strawberry Festival pays tribute to the annual berry harvest, and the role that strawberries have played as a part of Marysville’s colorful history for decades. It is one of the longest ongoing festivals in Washington state, and ranks among the most-recognized strawberry festivals across the country.

Celebrating the spring harvest of ripe, red berries, our annual festival draws thousands of families from across the Paci� c Northwest for a week of memorable community fun.

Each day of celebration is an opportunity to make a family memory – from the classic cars in the annual car show to the hidden stars of our community strutting their stu� in the talent show, to our Market in the Park and carnival fun, you’re sure to � nd an activity that your whole family will enjoy. On behalf of the Tulalip Tribes, welcome to “Berried Treasure Let It Shine,” our 84th Annual Marysville Strawberry Festival!

Each and every one of us carries a talent or passion; this year’s theme reminds us to cultivate it and put it to work for our community. It’s been a trying year, but we’re excited to come together and celebrate our unique strengths and our caring for one another.

The Tulalip Tribes share a strong partnership with Marysville, Everett and Snohomish County. As the region’s � rst residents, Coast Salish culture has thrived on and along the waterways of the Puget Sound for thousands of years, long before the Point Elliott Treaty of 1855, which brought out Snohomish, Snoqualmie, Skykomish, Kiliallus, and other tribes and bands together to the Tulalip Reservation.

Together, as friends, neighbors and partners, we are continuing to build our communities and the region. We hope you make the most of the festival and enjoy the company of friends as well as a taste of the culture, history, entertainment and other opportunities our area o� ers.

Welcome to the 84th annual Marysville Strawberry Festival, which runs this year from June 13-21. We will kick o� our festival week with Kids Day Saturday, June 13, and � nish it up with the Twilight Grand Parade on Saturday, June 20. I appreciate all our volunteers and board members who have put in many hours of planning and hard work to make this year’s festival shine. Thank you also to the city of Marysville, Tulalip Tribes and all our sponsors for your support in making this a memorable week for our community and visitors.

This year’s theme is “Berried Treasure Let It Shine”. Our goal is to encourage and recognize how each individual shines within their community, whether it is through their local church, volunteering at the Boys and Girls Club, helping out at a food bank or one of many other ways of serving. Through these opportunities to share, I have seen our treasure shine, everything from our deep cultural roots, to the parks, activities and families that allow each of us to grow.Our greatest treasure is the sense of service and giving back to our community, and that is what helps expand our treasure chest. her role as queen of the Marysville Strawberry Festival.“I always want to set a good example,” she said. After appearing in a few parades, she said being a role model has been her favorite part.“If I smile, it might mean something to them and inspire them to do something bigger,” she said.Savannah said people are so positive at parades.“Everybody’s smiling; there’s no frown ever,” she said. “Everyone’s excited to see one another;

there’s no confrontation.”She said she loves to see communities come together at such events.“They line up along the street, all together, for the same reason. It’s powerful,” Savannah said.She said she can’t wait for the Marysville Strawberry Festival.“I get excited for other communities for people I don’t even know,” she said. “I can’t wait to bring

it all home in front of people I’m close to.”Savannah moved to town when she was 6. She came to love the town after an internship with the

North County Outlook and now as editor of the Everett Community College newspaper because she understands the inner workings of how a city is run.

She plans to attend Utah State and major in journalism. She is also on the Yearbook staff as a senior at Marysville Getchell High School.

She is close to her family and is active in her church, the Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. “That helps keep my head on straight,” she said. “I’ve been taught my path – that it’s not just what I’ve done, but who has helped.”Savannah has known others who have been on the royalty court, and she is proud to follow in their footsteps.“One person can help, do good things for others and bring joy to people’s lives,” she said.

BY STEVE POWELLMARYSVILLE – Being a Marysville Strawberry Festival princess is not what Marina Ciferri

thought it would be.“It’s way more fun,” she said. Marina said as an audience member in the past, she didn’t know what to expect being on the float.

But she loves it.“You can look at every individual, and the little kids look so happy,” she said.After a few parades, Marina said her favorite part has been making friends with other royalty. They

are able to stay in touch via social media.Marina was raised in a military family so they moved around a lot, every three years. She decided

to run for the court to be “part of Marysville, more connected.”She knew a previous princess who told her how much fun it was. Marina said being on the royalty has helped her social skills.“I had terrible stage fright,” she said, adding it’s getting better.Marina’s main other interest is tennis. She is captain of the Marysville Getchell High School team,

and has been the No. 1 singles player for the squad for three years. She hopes to place in the top three at districts to qualify for state, after finishing fifth at districts last year.

“I beat everybody last summer,” she said, adding this could be the year.She is a member and volunteer coach at the Mill Creek Tennis Club, playing up to five days a week.

She wants to play at the University of Washington and major in medicine. She is a junior in the Bio-Med Academy.In the past she has volunteered at Sarvey Wildlife Center and now is at the Marysville Community Food Bank. In her limited spare

time she helps her dad with his photography career.

Being a member of the royalty team is even more fun than she thought it would be

BY STEVE POWELLMARYSVILLE – Unlike her two counterparts, Cassie Coate knew somewhat what she was

getting into when she became one of the two princesses for this year’s Marysville Strawberry Festival.

In 2010, she was a member of the junior royalty.“I had a blast,” she said. “I was counting down the years to be on the senior royalty.”Her favorite part of being on the court is building relationships with other royalty. They get to

see each other at every parade. She loves the tradition of all of the royalty dancing together prior to each event.

“It’s so much fun waving in the parade and dancing on the float,” too, she said, adding their float’s songs are “Walkin’ on Sunshine” and “Let it Shine.”

She also likes “being out in the sun all day” and giving little girls pins at the parades and inspiring them.

Coate, a junior, said being a cheerleader at Marysville-Pilchuck High School helped prepare her for being a festival princess because she can “lead a crowd and be a team member.”

At school, she plays golf, and also is in Advanced Placement art. For her portfolio of 24 pieces, her theme is “Women who have made a difference.” Her artwork includes paintings of Eleanor Roosevelt, Michelle Obama, Princess Diana, Oprah and Mother Theresa.

As for the Marysville Strawberry Festival, she said she is looking forward to the shortcake eating contest, which she also has experience at.

“I’m a slow eater so I won’t win, but it will be fun,” she said.

She enjoys dancing on the � oat, making new friends, and she’s been in parades before

Bontrager and Zinead Morales as this year’s junior royalty. Garza attends Tenth Street Middle School. “Since I was a little girl, I dreamed about being a princess,” she

said. Being part of the royalty has its perks, but is also very busy,

Garza said. “Sometimes you have to go to a lot of places and leave school

early,” she said.Ada enjoys singing, dancing, acting and cooking and has

aspirations to become an actress. She is unsure which college she wants to attend but knows

she wants to go to Marysville-Pilchuck High School because of its school band and musical career opportunities.

From the same school, Brooke Bontrager is an athlete and enjoys sports like basketball and baseball.

Outside of athletics, she “enjoys life” by spending time with her family and friends.

She also wants to be an actress. She plans on attending M-P because her mom went there. Morales always wanted to be a princess because her older

sister, Azzlinn, was part of the senior royalty eight years ago.

M o r a l e s e n j o y e d seeing the parades with her family.

“She did really good in school, and I looked up to her b e c a u s e she was the eldest in the house,” Morales said.

M o r a l e s enjoys the outdoors such as horseback riding and hiking.

She attends Marysville Middle School but wants to attend M-P after that. “It’s around home, and I know it the best,” she said.

Morales wants to be a veterinarian when she grows up.

Dianne and Bert Kramlich were named the Princess and Prince of Windsor Square Retirement Community for last year’s Strawberry Festival, so it made sense that they’d be promoted to Queen and King for this year’s Grand Parade.

The Kramliches have a combined century of living in Marysville — Dianne for 47 years, Bert for 53 years — so they still miss some of the activities that were traditionally part of the festival.

“I miss the adult trike races,” Bert said. “They still have candy, but it’s not sweet enough for me.”

“They always have nice rides at the festival,” Dianne said.

Besides being a mother to three sons, Dianne’s career has included stints as a travel agent and a Walmart greeter, while Bert has worked in the aerospace industry and in auto repair.

“I’ve been royalty all my life,” Bert joked.

Eleanor, 79, and Eddie Nielsen, 71, have been married for 20 years, five years after Eddie moved to the Marysville and Tulalip area from the South Pacific.

So they’ve had plenty of time to get used to the Marysville Strawberry Festival. But this year marks their first time serving as the Tulalip Tribes’ Senior Royalty in the Grand Parade.

Eddie, a Samoan, admitted to being a bit nervous, but not as nervous as Eleanor was when she first caught sight of him.

“I happened to be driving by when he was landscaping my cousin’s property,” said Eleanor, a lifelong Tulalip Tribal member. “I thought, ‘Oh, what a nice-looking man,’ and almost ran off the road,” she laughed.

Eleanor, a member of the Sheldon family, appreciates the opportunity to represent the tribes in the festival, especially since she hasn’t been able to attend the parade in nearly 36 years.

“I used to go every year, but selling fireworks has come first,” Eleanor said.

Joanne King, 77, and Bill Strong, 89, are looking forward to taking part in the Strawberry Festival’s festivities as the Senior Royalty for Mountain View Rehabilitation & Care Center.

King moved to Marysville a decade ago, and worked her way up from waitressing to managing a number of area restaurants and coffee shops over the years.

“I did my time as a car-hop” laughed King, who has four children. “I served food all my life.”

After a four-year stint in the Navy, Strong owned a restaurant of his own in Sultan.

He also has four kids, as well as a dog and a cat, and his marriage to his first wife, Fay, lasted 35 years before she passed away.

Patricia Quast, 82, and Earl Shaffer Jr., 85, have been crowned the Strawberry Festival’s Senior Royalty for the Marysville Care Center.

Quast worked as a secretary at Coyne Co. Real Estate and served as an advisor to the Marysville Rainbow Girls for years before her stint at the Safeway deli, from 1994 to 2012, while Shaffer was a Korean War veteran who worked as a diesel truck mechanic in Ohio, and an antique dealer in both Ohio and Marysville.

As a former field boss for strawberry farms in Marysville, who’s lived in town since 1953, Quast is very excited to be part of the Senior Royalty at this year’s Strawberry Festival.

“I’m delighted,” Quast said. “I feel confident because I’ve been working with the festival for the past fifty years. I look forward to giving out candy kisses.”

Shaffer was less effusive, but still expressed enthusiasm for the prospect of being able to have to his great-great granddaughter in the Grand Parade.

Amy Cox, 90, and Gordon Rux, 91, have both lived in the local area for most of their lives — Cox for 70 years, Rux for at least 80 — so it’s perhaps not surprising that this marks their second stints as Marysville Strawberry Festival Senior Royalty for Grandview Village.

Cox lived in Priest Point for a number of years, and saw her two children go through the Marysville schools, while Rux lived in Lake Stevens and Hartford before settling in Marysville 18 years ago.

Cox taught music and business, working her way through the Everett and Stanwood schools, while Rux worked as a logger before serving as the postmaster of Lake Stevens for 35 years.

“This whole region is just one of the best spots on earth, and I’ve never wanted to leave,” said Rux, who was forced to leave the area to serve in the Pacific Theater of World War II in the Army. “The Strawberry Festival Grand Parade is one of the most important events in this community each year.”

Last time, Cox was struck by how much of a new experience it was to serve as Senior Royalty, especially riding in a parade rather than watching it from the sidewalk, but this time, she is much more confident.

“I thought they should spread the wealth and name someone else, but they told me I was so likable that I got voted in again,” Cox said. “I’m very humbled and honored by it. It’s not ‘old hat’ at all.”

six years ago, while Don Henrickson, 92, has lived locally all his life.

When it comes to serving as Senior Royalty for the Strawberry Festival, though, they’ve got something in common.

They’ve been crowned the King and Queen of Brookdale Marysville this year, but they were festival royalty back when it was still called Merrill Gardens.

Morris was a manager and administrator of a police academy before she retired, while Hendrickson was a machinist for Scott Paper who did lawn prep work for developers.

Hendrickson was married for 57 years before he became a widower in 2000, which he seemed “a pretty good stretch.”

After Morris’ first husband died in 1985, she got hooked on geology, thanks to her second husband, to whom she was married 23 years before he died in 2009.

The decor outside her door at Brookdale includes polished gemstone stones and two pieces of a huge geode that the couple discovered on the border of Mexico and New Mexico.

“He took a ten-pound sledgehammer to it and cracked it open,” said Morris, who also traveled throughout Oregon, California, Nevada and Texas with her

husband as part of their “rockhound” pursuits. “I cried when I saw what was inside. It was beyond anything.”

Although Morris is still capable of living on her own, she had always planned to move into a care center, due to her mother’s positive experiences in such housing, as well as her own desire for company.

“I like the idea of living with a group,” Morris said.

“I get to have my own apartment but still be around other people.”

Looking ahead to the Grand Parade, the royals hope their ride affords them big enough windows to wave out and be seen by the crowds, and that the weather remains pleasant.

“I don’t feel any more experienced than I did the last time I did this,” Hendrickson chuckled.

Darren Doty is president of the festival and has been involved in it for about five years. His oldest daughter won a place on the junior royalty and his family enjoyed traveling and meeting new people so much that he has been involved ever since. He owns a construction business.

Q- What is your favorite thing about the festival? Being involved in the festival is something that my family decided to do together. It’s been great to have the opportunity to make new friends from all over the state as well as out of state and in Canada. They all become like a part of your extended family. Oh, and did I mention I like strawberry shortcake.

Q. Why are you willing to donate so much time to the festival? There are two main reasons. It’s fun. I enjoy going to other towns and promoting and inviting others to come visit our town and festival. I also believe the festival provides a great opportunity for the kids on the junior and senior court. They get a chance to learn public speaking skills, meet other representatives and officials from other towns, and earn a scholarship for furthering their education. It’s a wonderful learning experience. It’s enjoyable to watch how much they grow over the year and to see them shine.

Q - What is your favorite thing about the festival? So many to choose from! I love the out-of-town parades and meeting members of other communities. And, of course, being part of the grand event, Marysville Strawberry Festival during the third week of June each year.

Q - Why are you willing to donate so much time to the festival? It’s gratifying to be a part of such a terrific event each year. To watch the joy and happiness of the community during our festival time is an absolute thrill for me! Plus, I’ve made so many new personal friendships with my fellow board members, volunteers and royalty, both past and present.

Carol KapuaBoard Member Carol Kapua has been involved with the Strawberry Festival for 24 years. Cheryl Deckard got her

involved, saying it would only be one meeting a month. “She should have said one meeting a day.” Deckard told her she should be more involved in the community. Before that Kapua was just involved in the Downtown Marysville Merchants Association.

Kapua said she does festival work all year long, but she also volunteers with the Tulalip Tribes and is a “guardian” for a 9-year-old special needs girl. She also is on the Marysville hotel-motel committee.

Q- What is your favorite thing about the festival? When the parade starts and that little kid looks up and says “look mommy”. That look just makes it all worthwhile. The friendships. The family festivals. I think it’s because I can do something for my community and feel appreciated. I love it when people say “thank you for your community service.” I feel real blessed because I’ve had such a good life and am able to give back.

He has been involved with the festival as a participant and liaison for 12 years. Ten years ago he promised Carol Kapua if he ever left the group he was with he would join the board. She remembered.

Q - What is your favorite thing about the festival? Engaging the community, its citizens and celebrating both are his favorite things about the festival. Watching things grow as we move the festival forward. We are adding the charity component and looking to expanding the scholarship program. Sharing with our royalty the importance and joy of giving back to your community. It is an exciting time to be a part of the festival.

Alice VanBeek is a board member and has been involved with the festival for seven years. She wanted to get more involved in the community and had desire to be around young people. Since her husband was already involved, 2014 President Arvin VanBeek, she saw all the fun he was having so decided to join, too.

Q - What is your favorite thing about the festival? Being able to travel with our float and royalty is wonderful. I get to met some amazing young people from our local schools, be involved in their lives and get to travel all over Washington, parts of Oregon and B.C. and learn more about the communities around us. Also, as hospitality director it is my job to make sure our visiting dignitaries have a place to stay, help them enjoy our community and the weekend activities and make all the arrangements for our formal dinner.

Q - Why are you willing to donate so much time to the festival? Because I enjoy working with people in our community, getting to know my neighbors, and seeing all the smiles and happy faces along the parade route makes all the hard work worth it. If you can brighten someone’s day all the hard work is worth it.

Jess Thompson is a Maryfest board member who started volunteering in 1995 after participating with D.A.R.E and seeing how everyone shined that weekend. In 2004 our family began to volunteer for the grand and then kiddies parades.

Q- What is your favorite thing about the festival? To see Marysville’s treasures all shined up for an all-encompassing week of pride and unity throughout our community.

Q. Why are you willing to donate so much time to the festival? As one of the youngest board members I can see a significant need for youth and young adults to step forward for the festival. I have found I can’t help but be motivated to contribute my best for the Marysville Strawberry Festival when those such as Carol, Dena, Darren and Paul give a significant portion of their energy to make sure we all shine.

Rick Lewis is a board member and Kids Day co-director in his first year. A teacher in the Granite Falls School District, Lewis wanted to be more involved in the community. He previously had been involved in a local church that was very active, and he wanted to continue that.

BY KIRK BOXLEITNERMarysville kids can have all the fun they want on Saturday, June 13,

from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., during the Marysville Strawberry Festival’s Kids Day Party in the Park at Asbery Field.

“It’s a nice community effort to bring everyone in so they can enjoy the day,” event director Dina Sekste-Bittner said.

The Kids Day Party in the Park will host all sorts of festivities aimed at Marysville’s youth, from tasty treats to constructive activities.

The event has frequently featured food vendors, paper crown-making and art contests, with an abundance of paints, crayons and stick-on items.

Last year saw Usborne Books supply children’s books, and the Tulalip Cabela’s offer free gifts and fishing in a pool.

Members of the Strawberry Festival Royalty will also be at the event to interact with kids.

You might have a chance to have a face-painter or temporary tattoo artist decorate your body, or catch an appearance by Clover the Balloon Fairy. The fairy is pretty tight-lipped around people, so kids will have a challenge getting anything out of her.

“She makes unusual balloons, and does not talk to humans,” Sekste-Bittner said. “So that’s exciting to children, as they try to get a response.”

Among other things to be enjoyed are the police cars and fire engines that usually show up.

Seske-Bittner has hopes of expanding the Touch-A-Truck to include an aid car, garbage truck and a tow truck, using local vendors.

Marysville Strawberry Festival Berry Run will be held Sunday, June 14, at 9 a.m.

This year’s event will take place at the Tulalip Amphitheater in Marysville, instead of its previous location at the Smokey Point Plant Farm, which is now closed, event organizer and Lakewood High School track coach Jeff Sowards said.

Participants can either run or walk a 5-kilometer course. The course starts at 105th Street NE at the amphitheater, continues

west onto George Williams Senior Avenue NE, south to 88th Street NE, west along a paved path that parallels Quil Ceda Parkway and 99th Place NE, north onto George Williams Senior Avenue NE again and east on 105th Street NE to finish at the amphitheater.

Participants will be given a t-shirt if registered before June 6 at 11:59 p.m.

The first-place winner of each age group receives a medal and second- and third-placers will each receive a ribbon.

Participants under age 18 will pay their age. Adults pay $20.

The Maryfest annual fashion show returns to the Strawberry Festival at a different location June 16.

This year’s showing will be at the Marysville Opera House with an “upscale” beach theme with clothes from the Fred Meyer and Walmart in Marysville.

Mayor Jon Nehring and other community leaders will be modeling.

Also at the show will be the Scholarship Fundraiser Luncheon, which will fund scholarships for the royalty, with lunch and dessert from Wild Rose catering.

“We want to bring community awareness to the royalty and the scholarship fund,” event coordinator Melva Walser said.

The queen will be awarded a $5,000 scholarship, and the princesses will receive $3,500 each for their respective colleges.

Check in begins at 11:30 a.m. Preregistration is $25, and registration $35 at the door. The Marysville Opera House is located on 1225 3rd St.

•1947: The booth at city park served 5,500 plates of strawberry shortcake and whipped cream.

•1955: Sirens, rockets and an untimely drizzle heralded the beginning of Saturday morning’s Grand Parade.

•1967: A traffic tie-up on the Snohomish River Bridge caused numerous late arrivals among parade entries.

•1976: There were dignitaries in convertibles and antique automobiles who followed Irene Wright, Marysville pioneer, and Earl Averill, baseball great who served as grand marshal.

•1997: The parade was canceled because of a thunderstorm but the rest of the events went off without a hitch.

•2003: Fair weather and friendly crowds marked the first-ever televised Marysville Strawberry Festival Grand Parade June 21. The starting time of the parade was moved up an hour so more groups could participate.

•2010: The Totem Middle School campus proved to be a hotbed of activity June 19, between hosting the Kids Party in the Park and serving as the staging ground for the Kiddies Parade.

attendees of this year’s Market held at Asbery Field that plenty of familiar favorites and new features alike would be on site through the weekend of June 19-21.

“We’ve got lots of returning vendors, plus a few more activities,” Hiatt said. “Of course, the bouncy house, the pony rides, the rock-climbing wall, the go-karts and the train rides will all be back.”

The Market also showcases artistic talent in the form of not only live musical performances, but also a host of area crafters, whose handmade products have ranged from wood puzzles to housewares such as kitchen towels and pot-holders.

“We’re constantly looking for crafters at other festivals,” Hiatt said.

Local merchants and regional businesses will be present as well to provide information on subjects such as window installations and other home

improvements.Hiatt reported that more than 130 tent

vendors, as many as 10 field vendors and 15 food vendors have signed up. Food vendors will sell fare ranging from bratwurst to frozen treats, and also shrimp, sushi and fish-and-chips.

The Market will run at Asbery Field from 2-9 p.m. on Friday, June 19, from 10 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.; on Saturday, June 20, with the food venders staying open until 9 p.m.; and from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday, June 21.

Rock-and-roll band Jette Sette will kick off the event’s musical entertainment on June 19, with a benefit concert at 4:30 p.m. for the Snohomish County Law Enforcement Pennies for Puppies, a non-profit organization raising money to purchase K-9 dogs.

For June 20, the Ian McFeron Band, Stacy Jones Band, the A Band, featuring Becky Foster, and the Wingmen will perform. “Voices of the Village” and Rock Radio will perform June 21.

This year’s festivities were capped off Saturday with the Grand Parade. Grand Marshal Steve Pool, weather forecaster for KOMO-TV 4 in Seattle, cooperated with a perfect, first-day-of-summer (though he admits his prediction Friday called for a less than good day; he said for once it was OK to be wrong.)

The “worlds finest carnival” returns to the Strawberry Festival.

There is much to be enjoyed at the Funtastic Shows traveling carnival, which will be located at the Marysville Middle School playfield.

The traveling carnival has hosted rides such as a Ferris Wheel, scrambler and octopus and tries to bring rides the community has enjoyed the most in the past.

Ceremony continues on Saturday, June 20, at 10 a.m. at Totem Middle School in Marysville.

“It is maintained by the Strawberry Festival and the school district,” Maryfest board member Carol Kapua said.

The Royal Rosarians from Portland have been planting roses with Maryfest since 2001, when Maryfest joined the Northwest Hosting Association.

“When we joined in 2001, we were the 13th festival to join,” Kapua said. “If you have someone you’re honoring, or an organization, they will honor those individuals with a rose.”

The Royal Rosarians and Maryfest’s president will plant the flower together. This year’s ceremony will honor Maryfest President Darren Doty.

“They plant the rose and bless it,” Kapua said. “We set up a table with rolls, donuts and punch that is open to the public.”

Various groups and individuals have been honored by rose plantings over the years.

“A plaque goes in front of every rose saying what type it is, and who’s being honored,” Kapua said.

The ceremony takes place at the April Friesner Memorial Garden.

“I think it is very special because the memorial garden is named after April Friesner,” said Kapua, who worked with Friesner, a co-director of Maryfest who died in 2004.

MARYSVILLE — The Marysville Strawberry Festival will show off this year’s Maryfest float Saturday, June 20, at 7:45 p.m at the grand parade.

This year’s float features an aquatic message reflecting the “Berried Treasure” theme, including seahorses, jellyfish, coral and an assortment of shells.

The float will also feature new animations, including a “strawberry pirate” holding an antique telescope.

served as a volunteer fireman, did nearly every job at The Marysville Globe before his retirement, and at age 5 he even served as the queen’s attendant, standing by her throne on the float for the 1937 Marysville Strawberry Festival Parade.

“My sister was in eighth grade and was set to be in the parade, but she couldn’t go, so I took her place,” said Bob, the last of eight children born to Olive and Art Buttke. “All those years I was in the fire department, I had to go when we got called. Because I was working for the paper, I couldn’t even ride in the truck, because I had to take the pictures.”

Bob was full of stories about all of those experiences when he was recently informed that he could add one more title to the list — grand marshal for this year’s Strawberry Festival.

Paul Brown, vice president of the festival and publisher of The Marysville Globe, told Bob he’d been chosen because of

his lifetime of contributions to the community.

With his wife of 63 years, Bev, and their three adult children by his side, Bob laughed into a series of tales, both silly and serious, which hearkened back to the history of his hometown.

“When I started at the Globe, the old editor would throw his cigars on the floor, so that the butts and ashes and dross would be mixed in to make the pigs of type metal,” Bob said.

Bob recalled meals at Ron’s Hamburgers and getting his car fixed at “Smitty” Smith’s garage, as well as how the boat ramp used to be the site of the town’s garbage dump.

“I think I could name just about every one of the businesses that were on State Street, before it was State Avenue,” Bob said. “There was the tavern where women weren’t allowed, because there was only one restroom, and it was for men, so women would call for their husbands

Not only did Bob serve alongside Rudy Wright, the only Marysville firefighter who’s ever died in the line of duty, but he was there the day that Rudy died.

On Nov. 3, 1970, Rudy and Bob were at an accident between a car and truck, at what was then Marshall Road and Interstate 5. Barricades were placed to redirect traffic, while firefighters and volunteers hosed away spilled diesel fuel. A car driven by an Everett man crashed through the barricades and struck Rudy, killing him instantly.

“He almost killed me,” Bob

said. “I was standing right beside Rudy, and I didn’t see or hear him until he hit Rudy.”

Bob estimated there were 30 firefighters covering Marysville at the time, all of them volunteers, who were summoned from their homes by the bell on their landline telephones.

Bob was five months old for the first Strawberry Festival, and he’s been in town for

every one since.“I’ve still got my old

typewriter,” Bob said. “Every new store that opens in town wants to hire me as a greeter,” he laughed.

He concluded, “After all the people I’ve seen serve as grand marshal over the years, I’ve been waiting for this. I think I deserve every bit of it,” he chuckled.
