On Wednesday, September 3, 2014, the school year will begin and our classrooms will be bustling with students and staff, eager and excited to set forth on a new journey of learning and discovery; a journey full of challenges, but one fi lled with great hope for what the future will bring. In this edition of the Sequim School District and Sound Publishing’s “Kids Today Back to School Guide” you will fi nd important information to help you and your child get the new year off to a great start. Please take some time to look over its content, but if something is missing or is unclear, don’t hesitate to give your school or the district offi ce a call, and we will assist you with whatever you need.

As a district it is our mission to “inspire and achieve excellence in the academic, creative, and physical potential of each student.” This past year, the Class of 2014 received nearly three million dollars in scholarships to continue their education beyond graduation. This achievement was not accomplished during their senior year alone, but was made possible through the hard work and great effort of the families, the district, the community, and the students throughout their entire school experience. This success is something to celebrate and is also something to build on so we can continue to improve student achievement across the district, engage students in meaningful and relevant ways, and reduce the number of students who lose hope and drop out of school, as well as create a safer environment for our students.

These are not easy tasks, but they can be done by partnering together and holding ourselves accountable to a vision of high expectations. We look forward to working with you this year to make this vision a reality.

Communication is vital to our success as a school system, so I urge you to attend the “Back to School” opportunities being provided by your child’s school. Not only will you be able to meet your child’s teachers, you will hear fi rst-hand important information so you know what’s going on, and you will show your child that school is important to you. In addition, please visit our district’s website, as well as your school’s webpage. You will fi nd current news, upcoming events, and a wide array of information to help you navigate throughout the school year. You can also receive updates if you go on Facebook and “like” the Sequim School District’s page.

I hope you continue to enjoy the wonderful summer season we’ve experienced this year. It will soon come to an end, but we look forward to the wonderful year that lies ahead.

Kelly SheaSuperintendent of Sequim Schools

The District recognizes the valuable contri-bution made to the total school program through the volunteer as-sistance of par-ents and other citizens. Last year, we had over 800 parents and community mem-bers registered as volunteers in our schools.

To be a volunteer in the Sequim School District, you must complete the volunteer clearance process prior to being assigned to a volunteer position within a building. This process needs to be repeated each school year. The Volunteer Registration Form for the 2014-15 school year is now available on the District website at www.sequim.k12.wa.us. You may pick up a copy at any school offi ce or at the District Offi ce. The beginning of the new school year is an excellent time to fi ll out and turn in your form so you can be cleared and ready to volunteer, chaperone, etc.

Complete, sign, and return the Volunteer Registration Form with a copy attached of your Driver's License or State ID card to your child's school or the District Offi ce at least two weeks prior to the date you wish to begin volunteering.

If you have questions about volunteering or about the volunteer screening process, please call Volunteer Coordinator Patsene Dashiell at (360)582-3264. Thank you!

Welcome to the Sequim School District Volunteer Program!

release any “directory information” for commercial purposes or for other purposes not required by law or not related to school business.

Occasionally, photographs may be taken of students for use in the news media or in District produced publications. If you do not want your child to appear in a photo-graph, videotape, film or slide, please let your child’s school know in writing.

This form must be accompanied by authorization and written directions from a licensed health professional within the scope of his/her prescrip-tive authority.

Medication must be kept in the nurse’s offi ce in the original

It is important to complete the Free/Reduced Price Meal Ap-plication if there is a chance that your student(s) may qualify. The income guidelines change yearly and are set at the federal level, not at the district level. New applications are required to be completed every year for your student(s) to remain eligible for this program. Only one application per family is required. Applications are avail-able online in Skyward Family Access, which requires families to login. It is strongly recommended that the application be submitted through that format. Contact your school’s building secretary if as-sistance is needed using the electronic application. For the fi rst 30 meal operating days of the new school year, your student(s) will be at the same status that they were in June of the previous year. It is very important that the new applications are returned to the school in a timely manner for your student(s) to continue receiving free or reduced priced meals. Once your new, completed application is received, you will be notifi ed by the school district if you continue to qualify for the program. After 30 meal service days (October 14 for the 2014-15 school year) have passed and there is no new ap-plication on fi le for your student, he or she will be removed from the program and your family will be expected to pay full price for their meals. Parents are responsible for the student’s account until approved for the program.

A computer is available to families for submitting the online application in the technology department offi ce. For more informa-tion, call the District offi ce at (360)582-3260.

education records. They are: 1) The right to inspect and review the student’s education records

within 45 days of the day the School receives a request for access. Parents of eligible students should submit to the School principal [or appropriate school offi cial] a written request that identifi es the record(s) they wish to inspect. The School offi cial will make arrangements for access and notify the parent or eligible student of the time and place where the records may be inspected.

2) The right to request the amendment of the student’s education records that the parent or eligible student believes are inaccurate or misleading. Parents or eligible students may ask the School to amend a record that they believe is inaccurate or misleading. They should write the School principal [or appropriate offi cial], clearly identifying the part of the record they want changed, and specify why it is inaccurate or misleading. If the School decides not to amend the record as requested by the parent or eligible student, the School will notify the parent or eligible student of the decision and advise them of their right to a hearing regarding the request for amendment. Additional information regarding the hearing procedures will be provided to the parent or eligible student when notifi ed of the right to a hearing.

3) The right to consent to disclosures of personally identifi able infor-mation contained in the student’s education records, except to the extent that FERPA authorizes disclosure without consent. One exception, which permits disclosure without consent, is disclosure to school offi cials with legitimate educational interests. A school offi cial is a person employed by the School as an administrator, supervisor, instructor, or support staff member (including health or medical staff and law enforcement unit personnel); a person serving on the School Board; a person or company with whom the School has contracted to perform a special task (such as an attorney, auditor, medical consultant, or therapist); or a parent or student serving on an offi cial committee, such as a disciplinary or grievance com-mittee, or assisting another school offi cial in performing his or her tasks. A school offi cial has a legitimate educational interest if the offi cial needs to review an education record in order to fulfi ll his or her professional responsibility. Upon request, the School may disclose education records without consent to offi cials of another school district in which a student seeks or intends to enroll. (NOTE: FERPA requires a school district to make a reasonable attempt to notify the parent or eligible student of the records request unless it states in its annual notifi cation that it intends to forward records on request.)

4) The right to fi le a complaint with the U.S. Department of Education concerning alleged failures by the School to comply with the requirements of FERPA. The name and address of the Offi ce that administers FERPA are: Family Policy Compliance Offi ce; U.S. Department of Education; 400 Maryland Avenue, SW; Washington, DC 20202-4605.

Complaints and Grievances Concerning Sta and Programs Policy 4220

The board desires that the district be informed of the criticisms and complaints that parents, guardians, or community members may have regarding its staff, programs, and operations. At the same time, the board has confi dence in its staff and programs and shall act to protect them from unwarranted criticism or disruptive interference. Concerns received by the board or a board member are referred to the superintendent for investigation and action. Forms to begin the process may be obtained at school building offi ces.

Sequim Middle School Supply List

WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 27, 2014 • 7 KIDS TODAY FALL 2014

Transportation is provided for students who reside more than one mile from school and for all students grades K-5 under one mile. One bus run will be operated in the AM and one in the PM with a mid-day Kindergarten run. Schedules will be posted on the district website, at the schools, and printed in the local newspaper in advance of school beginning. The fi rst week of school, schedules and bus stops may be adjusted slightly, as bus routes are fi ne-tuned with respect to times and student rider numbers.

General Guidelines: If your student rides a school bus, parents are asked to review general bus rules with their students. Those rules and regula-tions are distributed the fi rst week of school by your bus driver and need to be signed and returned to the driver.

Children walking to school: Parents, plan out a safe route to school with your child. Caution them to choose intersections for crossing that are regulated by stop-and-go signals, traffi c signs, or intersections that are designated with school crossing signs with good visibility and good directions.

Sequim School District reserves the right to change bus routes and times as needed. Students in grades K-12 ride on buses together. Please check your student’s bus route and pick-up time listed below.

First day of school: The Transportation Depart-ment strongly encourages all students who intend to ride the bus do so on the morning of the fi rst day of school (September 3, 2014). This will enable parents, students and bus drivers to become familiar with the bus stop routine. Students who plan to ride the bus need to be at their stop fi ve minutes ahead of pick-up time. Times and pick-up points listed below are approximations until exact enrollment and passenger loads are fi xed. Students need to be at their bus stop fi ve minutes before posted time. Please remember, if a bus passes waiting students, it may not be their bus.

For the fi rst day, new students will be picked up at all stops along routes, except for Hwy 101 East and West routes. The following are routes, not necessar-ily bus stops. Students will be advised after two or three days where the permanent bus stop will be. Ev-ery effort will be made to space stops approximately one-half mile apart, thus requiring a quarter-mile walk along routes. Exceptions will be made only on a case-by-case basis due to special circumstances such as student safety or handi- capped conditions.

Safety reminder for Hwy 101 West & East students: All students living on Hwy 101 West or East must catch the bus at their designated stop. Do not cross the highway to catch the bus at a later time.

Reminder for A.M. Greywolf Elementary stu-dents: Greywolf Elementary students are transferred to a shuttle bus in the Fir Street stadium parking lot.

Kindergarten bus runs: Kindergarten bus routes will be available at elementary schools on/after Sept 25, or parents may call the Transportation offi ce. Morning Kindergarten students will ride their regular route bus to school, and the mid-day Kindergarten bus home. Afternoon Kindergarten students will ride the mid-day Kindergarten bus to school and their regular route bus home. There will be mid-day Kin-dergarten bus runs. Bus drivers will not drop Kinder-

garten students at stops unless a parent or other designated adult is there to meet the child. If there is no adult at the stop, the child will be brought back to the school.

Parents, for younger elementary students on regu-lar bus runs, please have someone at the stop to meet the students, particularly on Hwy 101 East and West.

All other students will ride the same route bus in the AM and the PM unless otherwise noted. Stu-dents who wish to get off at a stop other than their own, or who wish to ride a bus other than their own must have an offi cial bus pass issued by the school offi ce. Hand- written notes from parents will not be accepted.

If you have questions, please contact Jeff Gos-sage, Director of Transportation, at (360)582-3274 or (360)582-3273.

Last year the Sequim School District Technology Committee identifi ed fi ve areas of focus for technol-ogy. They included 1) Dynamic Accessible Robust Infrastructure, 2) Ongoing Professional Development, 3) Strong Network and Learning Support Team, 4) Student Learning Focus, 5) Sustainable. Technology staff have been very busy this summer adding, mov-ing, updating and upgrading technology throughout the district working to achieve this vision.

WIRELESS ACCESS Our major summer project was the replace-

ment of our old Aruba wireless access system with “Ruckus”. This new system helps us move from our old wireless model of “coverage” to a new paradigm of “capacity” and is a big step toward implementing one of our “Technology Vision” components which is a “Dynamic Accessible Robust Infrastructure”. Students and staff will now be able to access high speed wireless with their school district credentials and any wireless device using their district login. This is a secure connection that provides the same internet fi ltering processes that are employed throughout the school district network.

NEW LABS and TECHNOLOGYThis fall, new technology will be available to

secondary students in four computer labs. At the high school, three Career and Technical Education (CTE) labs were replaced and will support instruction in Microsoft IT Academy, Multi Media, AP Computer Science, Game Design, Computer Programming, CAD and Robotics classes. At the middle school,

Digital Media, Game Design and Yearbook classes will have new machines. Both Haller and Greywolf will now have two computer labs available for stu-dent use once the new portables for those buildings are in place. This will increase access for students as they prepare for the new online Smarter Balance Assessments.

Mimio Interactive Boards are being installed in all math classrooms to support the new Eureka Math and Algebra program at the secondary level.

NEW PROGRAMSAdditionally over the summer all computers in the

district were upgraded with new images that included Offi ce 2013, which will be further enhanced with Offi ce 365 and the online storage with OneDrive.

Secondary students (grades 6-12) will begin using Offi ce 365 and One Drive this fall with school e-mail availability. We are looking forward to providing ad-ditional training in this application for students and staff and expanding its use.

We have also purchased “Atomic Learning”

online training software licenses for all staff and students in the Sequim School District and will be implementing access to training in a variety of technical and instructional areas. Students and staff will have access to these online tools both at school and home. Look for more information in the future.

SKYWARD FAMILY ACCESSFamily Access is a web-based application that

provides parents with access to student attendance, grades, assignments, lunch account information, and more. Families with current e-mail information will receive their login information via a secure e-mail. If you do not receive this information or it is lost, parents will need to present themselves in person at the district offi ce. Password and login information will not be released over the phone or by e-mail for security reasons. RevTrak and the ability to make online lunch account deposits continue this year. Debit/credit cards are accepted for lunch account payments. Secondary students will receive student access logins and passwords at school.

REGISTER ON THE “SCHOOLWIRES” DISTRICT WEBSITE

Schoolwires.com provides the District’s web page with a feature-rich content management system designed especially for schools. We ask that parents and interested citizens “register” online at www.sequim.k12.wa.us to be eligible for available interac-tive services such as E-alerts and other specifi c “role” features. The District website also features direct links to Family Access.

WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 27, 2014 • 11 KIDS TODAY FALL 2014

Keep your eyes open, for safety’s sake!

You’re never too oldto remember the rules

You might think you’re treating your child by driving him or her to school every day, maybe because doing so spares him or her the dis-comfort of getting up a bit earlier in the morning. But the School Bus Information Council reports that school buses are a far safer form of transportation for children than private vehicles. Each day, about 169 children are involved in fatal accidents with an adult driver on the way to or from school in a privately owned vehicle; of chil-dren who are bused to and from school each day, only ve are fatally injured.

It goes without saying that ve fatal injuries per day are too many. School Bus Safety Week, from October 21-25 this year, is all about brushing up on safety for drivers and for children. Adults on the road should be familiar with the law about stopping for school buses. Know how far back to stop, and be prepared for bus drivers to stop before crossing train tracks, as they are required to do in most jurisdictions.

Parents and children should refresh their memories about basic school bus safety. Children should stand

at least 10 feet back from where the school bus stops. Don’t crowd the door; climb the bus’s steps in an orderly fashion, in single le. Chil-dren who have to cross the road a er getting o the bus should learn to look both ways before crossing, even if cars are supposed to stop behind the bus. And don’t forget to tell your children to return home right away if the bus doesn’t show up at the expected time.
