Special MBR Section:SMEP Student Paper Competition
Abstracts, 2012
In 2003, the Board of Trustees of the Society of Multivariate Experimental
Psychology (SMEP) implemented a student preconference, so this year’s student
preconference represented the 10th annual student preconference. In 2012, a
large number of proposals were submitted for student preconference presenta-
tions. These proposals were evaluated through a competitive process in which
student presenters from the 2011 SMEP student preconference acted as referees
for the current submissions, supervised by a student organizer and the past-
president of SMEP. Student presentations from previous years have been of
uniformly high quality, and manuscripts based on student presentations have
subsequently been published in MBR, attesting to the high quality.
Proposals for the current year were once again deemed to be very strong.
Because of the high quality, eight proposals were selected for oral presentation,
as in prior years. But, this year, an additional 12 students were selected to give
poster presentations. The 8 oral presentations were made on the morning of 11
October, and the 12 poster presentations were made during an evening session
on the same day. All student preconference presentations were made at the
venue hosting the 2012 SMEP annual meeting, the Coast Coal Harbour Hotel
in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.
In 2008, the SMEP Board of Trustees and the Editorial Advisory Board
approved publication of abstracts from student presentations in our journal. In
this issue—the first issue of 2013, we continue the tradition and publish the fifth
set of abstracts from the student presentations.
Xin (Cynthia) Tong from the University of Notre Dame served as preconfer-
ence organizer. Lisa Harlow from the University of Rhode Island, the SMEP
past-president, and Scott Hofer from the University of Victoria, the SMEP
coordinating officer, oversaw and aided the process. The student reviewers who
served as the selection committee (who presented papers at the preconference
