Page 5: Special Circulations

Pulmonary arteries (R & L )

Pulmonary arteries appear blue because they are leaving the

heart and traveling to the lungs to become

oxygenated

Page 6: Special Circulations

Lobar arteries

Lobar arteries in the lungs appear blue because they are carrying blood away from the heart to the lungs to become oxygenated

Page 7: Special Circulations

Lobar veins

Lobar veins are traveling to the heart carrying oxygen rich blood that was picked up in the lungs, so they appear red.

Page 8: Special Circulations

Pulmonary veins (R & L)

Pulmonary veins appear red because oxygen rich blood is returning from the

lungs and entering the heart

Special Circulations: Hepatic Portal System

Directs blood from the gastrointestinal tract to liver

Page 11: Special Circulations

Hepatic portal vein

Takes blood from intestines and drains into the liver

Page 12: Special Circulations

Gastric vein (R & L)L

R

Drains the blood from the stomach directly into the hepatic portal vein

Page 13: Special Circulations

Superior mesenteric vein

Drains blood from small and large intestines directly into the hepatic portal vein

Page 14: Special Circulations

Inferior mesenteric vein

Drains into splenic and then into hepatic portal vein

Page 15: Special Circulations

Splenic vein

Drains blood from spleen, pancreas, and part of the stomach into the hepatic portal vein

Page 16: Special Circulations

Hepatic vein

Takes blood from liver and drains into inferior vena cava and then into the heart
