Bowl HistoryMichigan State football teams have appeared in 15 postseason bowl

games, including seven New Year’s Day games. Coach Charles Bachman’s squad was the first Spartan team to play in

a bowl when it lost to Auburn, 6-0, in the 1938 Orange Bowl.The Spartans are 6-9 overall in bowl games, with their first win com-

ing in the 1954 Rose Bowl, 28-20 over UCLA. The only time MSU haswon bowl games in back-to-back seasons came when it thumped Hawai’i,33-13, in the 1989 Aloha Bowl, then beat Southern Cal, 17-16, in the1990 Sun Bowl.

The Spartans went to five bowl games in the 1990s, including threeyears in a row from 1995-97.

The win over Florida in the 2000 Florida Citrus Bowl marked the firstbowl win for MSU since the 1990 Sun Bowl, and the first New Year’s Daywin since the 1988 Rose Bowl.

2000 Citrus Bowl MVP Plaxico Burress caught a school-record 13 passes for 185 yards and threetouchdowns in Michigan State’s 37-34 victory over 10th-ranked Florida.

Earl Morrall played in two Rose Bowls during his Spartan career, bothvs. UCLA, seeing playing time at quarterback behind Tom Yewcic in1954 and starting as a senior in ’56.

The fourth annual Orange Bowlgame wasn’t nearly as close as thefinal score might indicate asAuburn dominated play on bothsides of the football in recording ashutout victory, 6-0, over MichiganState. It still ranks as the lowest-scoring game in Orange Bowl histo-ry. Auburn wasted two scoringopportunities in the first quarter.Jimmy Fenton’s 25-yard run gavethe Tigers a first-and-10 at theMSU 12 but the Spartan defenseresponded by stuffing three-straightrunning plays and Lyle Rockenbachbroke up Fenton’s fourth-downpass. Tom McShannock’s intercep-tion and 29-yard return endedAuburn’s second scoring threat. Thegame’s only touchdown came in thesecond quarter and it was set up byGeorge Kenmore’s 28-yard pass toRalph O’Gwynne to the MSU 2.Auburn fullback Pel Sitz nettedonly 1 yard on three carries beforeO’Gwynne scored on a 1-yard runaround left end on fourth-and-goal.The Tigers had several chances inthe second half to break the gameopen. Auburn turned the ball overon downs at the MSU 16 in thethird quarter after Dutch Heath’s12-yard interception return to theMSU 24. Michigan State failed torecord a first down until late in thethird quarter when Ed Pearce brokea 29-yard run. Auburn drove insidethe MSU 30 twice in the fourthquarter but failed to put points onthe scoreboard. The Spartans’ onlyother first down came on a 23-yardpass from John Pingel to UsifHaney midway through the fourthquarter. Auburn outgainedMichigan State, 278-67, total yards.Fenton and Speck Kelly combinedfor 137 of the Tigers’ 197 rushingyards, gaining 76 and 61 yards,respectively. Auburn held Pingel,MSU’s All-America halfback, to 12yards rushing on seven carries. Asellout crowd of nearly 19,000attended the game at Miami’sbrand-new $360,000 RoddyBurdine Stadium.

Billy Wells ran for one touchdownand returned a punt for anotherscore to lead No. 3 Michigan Stateto a 28-20 victory over No. 5UCLA in the 1954 Rose Bowl.UCLA jumped out to a 14-0 lead,capitalizing on two Spartanturnovers. Midway through the firstquarter, Jim Salsbury recovered afumble on the MSU 37 and sixplays later, Paul Cameron hit BillStits with a 13-yard TD strike togive the Bruins a 7-0 lead. Early inthe second quarter, HardimanCureton and Bob Long combinedto sack Spartan QB Earl Morrall,who fumbled, and Cureton fell onit at the MSU 18. Seven plays later,Cameron scored on a 2-yard run offleft tackle. The momentumchanged midway through the sec-ond quarter when Ellis Duckettblocked Cameron’s punt from theUCLA 25 and returned it 6 yardsfor a touchdown as the Spartans cutthe deficit to 14-7 at halftime. TheSpartans dominated play in thethird quarter. Michigan State tookthe second-half kickoff and drove78 yards in 14 plays with LeRoyBolden scoring on a 1-yard dive totie the game at 14. Wells capped a10-play, 73-yard drive with a 2-yardTD run to give the Spartans theirfirst lead at 21-14 late in the thirdquarter. Early in the fourth quarter,UCLA forced another fumble andJack Ellena recovered it at the MSU24. Two plays later, Cameron hitRommie Loudd with a 28-yard TDtoss but Cameron’s conversionattempt sailed wide and the Bruinsstill trailed 21-20. Michigan Stateiced the game when Wells returnedCameron’s punt 62 yards for atouchdown with 4:51 left in thefourth quarter. Wells led a well-bal-anced Spartan running attack, pick-ing up 80 yards on 14 carries.

Dave Kaiser converted his firstcareer field-goal attempt, a 41-yarder with :07 left, to give No. 2Michigan State a 17-14 win overNo. 4 UCLA in the 1956 RoseBowl. Michigan State found itselfin an early hole as Earl Morrall’spass on the first play from scrim-mage was intercepted by JimDecker and returned 4 yards to theMSU 16. Four plays later, BobDavenport scored on a 2-yard runover left guard to give the Bruins a7-0 lead with 11:48 left in the firstquarter. Midway through the sec-ond quarter, Michigan State puttogether an 11-play, 80-yard driveto pull even at 7. Walt Kowalczyk’s30-yard run to the UCLA 17 set upMorrall’s 13-yard touchdown tossto Clarence Peaks. On the secondplay of the fourth quarter, theSpartans took its first lead at 14-7on Peaks’ 67-yard TD pass to JohnLewis, who caught the ball on the50 and took it the distance. Fiveminutes later, UCLA’s passing gameproduced a big play as RonnieKnox hit Decker with a 47-yardbomb to the MSU 7. Three playslater, Doug Peters scored on a 1-yard plunge at center. Morralldirected an 11-play, 59-yard driveto the UCLA 24 but GeraldPlanutis missed a 41-yard field-goalattempt. Five penalties were calledin the closing minutes and field posi-tion shifted in Michigan State’s favorwhen UCLA was whistled for three-straight fouls. Gary Beban ran for two touch-downs and threw for 147 yards tolead No. 5 UCLA to a 14-12 upsetwin over No. 2 Michigan State inthe 1966 Rose Bowl. MichiganState committed four first-halfturnovers, with the first coming latein the first quarter as Don Japingafumbled away a punt at the Spartan6 that UCLA’s John Erquiaga recov-ered. On the opening play of thesecond quarter, Beban scored on a1-yard sneak to give the Bruins a 7-0 lead. UCLA then surprised theSpartans with an on-sides kick thatBruin Dallas Grider recovered atthe MSU 42. Beban hooked upwith Kurt Altenburg for a 27-yardpass to the MSU 1. Beban cappedoff the five-play, 42-yard drive withanother 1-yard sneak as UCLAscored twice in 3:07 to build a 14-0lead. Michigan State rallied late inthe fourth quarter, scoring twice inthe final 6:13. Steve Juday’s 42-yardstrike to Gene Washington set upApisa’s 38-yard TD run. Juday’stwo-point pass attempt failed andthe Spartans trailed 14-6. TheSpartan defense held on the nextseries and Bubba Smith partiallyblocked Larry Cox’s punt to giveMSU possession at the UCLA 49.Juday finished off the 14-play scor-ing drive with a 1-yard sneak with:31 left. On the two-point try,Apisa was stopped short of the goalline by Grider and Bob Stiles.UCLA stopped the Spartans onfourth-and-1 plays three times inthe second half, including twice inthe fourth quarter. Three plays nettedonly 8 yards and Ralf Mojsiejenko’s52-yard field-goal attempt missedwide left. The Spartans put togeth-er a nine-play, 58-yard drive butearly in the second quarter onthird-and-goal from the Army 5,Dave Yarema’s pass was interceptedin the end zone by KermitMcKelvy. A Michigan State fumblenear midfield led to Army’s onlytouchdown. Cadet Clarence Jonescapped off an eight-play, 46-yarddrive with a 4-yard run off righttackle to give Army a 7-0 lead with6:41 left in the first half. The Spartans, mak-ing their first trip to Pasadena in 22years, ended the Big Ten’s six-gamelosing streak in the Rose Bowl. USCscored on its second possession as a12-play, 52-yard drive produced a 34-yard field goal by Quin Rodriguez.MSU responded with a 15-play, 76-yard drive of its own to take a 7-3lead on Lorenzo White’s 5-yardtouchdown run around left end with:54 left in the first quarter. TheSpartans built a 14-3 advantage earlyin the second quarter as BobbyMcAllister’s 55-yard completion toAndre Rison set up White’s secondTD run from 3 yards out. TheTrojans cut the deficit to 14-10 earlyin the third quarter as Rodney Peetehit Kevin Henry with a 33-yard TDstrike. Georgiahead coach Vince Dooley went outa winner in his final game in 25 sea-sons. The loss ended MSU’s six-game winning streak. The Bulldogsjumped out to a 17-0 lead onJohnson’s 6-yard TD toss toHampton, Steve Crumley’s 39-yardfield goal and Johnson’s 30-yard TDstrike to Hampton. The Spartansgot on the scoreboard late in thefirst half as Bobby McAllister fin-ished off a 10-play, 80-yard drivewith a 4-yard TD pass to AndreRison. Midway through the thirdquarter, Georgia put together a six-play, 64-yard drive to extend its leadto 24-7 on Kirk Warner’s 18-yardTD catch from Johnson. MSUresponded with an eight-play, 78-yard scoring drive as McAllister hitRison with a 55-yard bomb. A 36-yard field goal by Crumley gave theBulldogs a 27-13 advantage with2:16 left in the third quarter.McAllister’s 51-yard completion toRison set up Blake Ezor’s 3-yardTD run early in the fourth quarteras the Spartans pulled to within 27-20. Hampton’s third TD, a 32-yardrun, gave Georgia a 34-20 lead with11:58 remaining. Jeff Brohm completed 19-of-29passes for 197 yards and a touch-down to lead Louisville to an 18-7win over Michigan State in the1993 Liberty Bowl. MichiganState’s only touchdown came on thegame’s first series. The Spartanstook the opening kickoff and drove79 yards in 11 plays with DuaneGoulbourne twisting into the endzone on a 1-yard run over leftguard. Spartan QB Jim Miller start-ed with a hot hand, hitting all fourpass attempts for 50 yards on thefirst series. Louisville also scored onits first possession as an eight-play,56-yard march ended with DavidAkers’ 31-yard field goal. Midwaythrough the second quarter, theSpartans missed out on a scoringchance when Bill Stoyanovich mis-fired on a 31-yard field-goalattempt. Louisville put together a14-play, 74-yard drive in the thirdquarter but failed to put points onthe scoreboard as Akers missed a23-yard field-goal try. LSU also scored on itsfirst possession as KendallCleveland capped a seven-play, 80-yard drive with a 6-yard TD run totie the score at 7. Carl Reaves’ 17-yard interception return set up theSpartans’ second touchdown, a 3-yard run by Scott Greene for a 13-7lead. Michigan State’s lead lastedonly 14 seconds as Eddie Kennisonreturned the ensuing kickoff 92yards for a touchdown. TheSpartans regained the lead 13 sec-onds later when Derrick Masonreturned the kickoff 100 yards for ascore. Paul Edinger kicked a 39-yard fieldgoal as time expired to give No. 9Michigan State a 37-34 victory overNo. 10 Florida in the 2000 FloridaCitrus Bowl. It marked MichiganState’s first New Year’s Day bowl vic-tory since the 1988 Rose Bowl and itended a four-game losing streak inpostseason play. There were five leadchanges in the contest. The Spartansopened the scoring as an eight-play,36-yard drive resulted in a 46-yardfield goal by Edinger. Florida coun-tered with an eight-play, 80-yarddrive to take a 7-3 lead as TravisTaylor scored on a 12-yard toss fromDoug Johnson. Michigan State builta 17-7 lead in the second quarter onBill Burke’s 37-yard TD strike toPlaxico Burress and a 24-yard fumblereturn by T.J. Turner. The Gators puttogether an 11-play, 83-yard drive topull to within 17-14 on Johnson’s 8-yard TD pass to Taylor. Edinger’s sec-ond field goal, a 20-yarder, gave theSpartans a 20-14 lead but Johnsoncapped off an 11-play, 80-yard drivewith a 1-yard sneak to put Floridaahead at the half, 21-20. Burkedirected a 10-play, 84-yard drive latein the third quarter, hooking up withBurress for a 21-yard scoring pass.The Gators regained the lead on thenext possession as Johnson hit Taylorfor another score, this time from 39yards out. Florida’s final score cameoff a Spartan turnover as Alex Brownrecovered a fumble at the MSU 48.Six plays later, Rob Gillespie scoredon a 2-yard run as Florida extendedits lead to 34-26. Michigan State ral-lied to tie the score at 34 early in thefourth quarter as Burke found Burressalone in the end zone for a 30-yardcompletion then he hit Gari Scott forthe two-point conversion. LloydClemons’ 8-yard run on third-and-2set up Edinger’s game-winning kickfrom the Florida 22. Burress had aschool-record 13 receptions for 185yards and three TDs to earn CitrusBowl MVP honors. Burke completed21-of-35 throws for 257 yards andthree scores while Clemons rushedfor a game-high 105 yards on 20 car-ries. Johnson connected on 24-of-50passes for 288 yards and three TDswhile Taylor had 11 catches for 156yards and three scores.
