“It is my great pleasure to be welcoming you to our Spark

Conference. This year, we are planning to make Spark

Conference the biggest it has ever been, involving hundreds

of people from both Thailand and abroad. Our conference will

be revolving around the main socio political and economic

trend of South East Asia today, the ASEAN Economic

Community. As this new economic regime sets into motion in

these next years, we see that the youth in Thailand need a

massive surge in their activism, knowledge and leadership

development. This year’s Spark Conference will be directly

dealing with this issue and we are planning it to have a

substantial impact on all its participants.”

Welcome to the Land of Smiles

With twelve million foreigners flying into the country each year, Thailand has become Asia's

primary destination for people looking to spice up their lives a little. Yet despite this vast influx of

tourists and their cash, Thailand's cultural integrity remains largely undamaged – a country that

adroitly avoided colonization has been able to absorb Western influences without wholly

succumbing to them. Though the high-rises and neon lights occupy the foreground of the tourist

picture, the typical Thai community is still the traditional farming village. Almost fifty percent of

Thais earn their living from the land, based around the staple, rice, which forms the foundation

of the country's unique and famously sophisticated cuisine.

Introduction to Thailand

Page 4: Spark Conference 2012 Delegate Booklet First Edition

4

The Kingdom of Thailand, covering an area of 514,000 square kilometers, lies in the heart of

Southeast Asia bordering Myanmar, Laos, Cambodia and Malaysia. Thailand can be roughly

divided into the mountainous north, the fertile plains of the centre and the many beautiful,

tropical beaches and island of the south.

Bangkok itself is a modern metropolis boasting millions of inhabitants, hundreds of high rises

and a vibrant economy and culture. In November, Bangkok will be approximately around 17°C to

23°C. Thailand has a population of about 60 million people with a majority of the population

being an ethnic mix between Thai, Chinese, Mon, Khmer,

Burmese, Lao, Malay and Indian. The cultural and social

integration is strong so there is a firm feeling of unity and

conformity in the country.

The Thais are, on the whole, a group of people who believe that life should be enjoyed, but no one should infringe on others' rights. The Thais are tolerant and hospitable, and it is easy to get along with them. Good manners, common sense and a smile are necessities in Thailand.

Monarchy and religion are sacred in Thailand, and it is against the law to criticize them, especially in public. Mocking the monarchy, or joking about it, is a serious offense and is punishable by imprisonment.

Introduction to AIESEC

Welcome to AIESEC

The organizer of Spark Conference, AIESEC, is the world’s largest student-run organization operating in 113 countries with over 86,000 members all round the world. Our goal is the development of youth leadership and we make this possible through our day to day operational activities (in which we give students an actual role and job, ranging from staff to leaders) and through international internships. The internship opportunities that we make possible range from voluntary activities in developing communities around to world to professional internships in top companies in dozens of countries.

In Thailand, we are located in 4 of the top universities in the country: Assumption, Bangkok, Chulalongkorn and Thammasat Universities. We have over 200 members in the universities and are led by group of both local and international AIESECers. Our activities in Thailand range from having international internships in companies, schools and NGOs in Thailand, organizing numerous activities such as conferences, events, social projects etc.

For more information on AIESEC and AIESEC in Thailand, please visit our website at www.aiesec.org/thailand or our Facebook page at www.facebook.com/AIESECinThailand.

Welcome to Spark Conference

Spark Conference is a Youth Engagement and

Educational event geared towards contributing to

the full personal and professional readiness of the

youth in Thailand and South East Asia for AEC

2015 through the youth development framework of

AIESEC. This event will be engaging universities,

businesses, government, NGOs, media and the

youth to create a platform for all of them to

communicate, exchange ideas and train the youth

on practical leadership and teamwork skills. The

content of the conference will be revolving around training, workshops, discussions and

networking and will be held entirely in English.

Conference Objectives

1. Gathering youth representatives from South East Asia in a single forum

2. Connecting the youth to different sectors and achieving a strong understanding of the AEC,

youth development and AIESEC

3. Developing the youth by giving them an intense educational experience concerning practical

4. Creating a sustainable pipeline for the further education and activism of South East Asian

youth

Conference Theme – Lighting the Spark for the AEC

As the whole region of South East Asia moves into a new

socio-economic regime, the future that we know as the AEC

will require the youth to be global in their worldview,

entrepreneurial in their attitude and innovative in their

actions. However, there exists a gap in this vision for the

future. A large amount of youth across the region lacks the

skills, mentality and will to be competitive in this new AEC

era. This poses a unique opportunity to AIESEC as we are

challenged to adapt and expand upon our operations so that

we may deliver the qualities that are currently lacking in the

youth. That is why we in AIESEC Thailand view ourselves as the

potential vanguard for the paradigm shift of an entire generation. How to actually begin this

shift? A first step that is being organized and you are reading about right now is Spark

Conference as it will be the event that will light the path towards the AEC.

This year at Spark Conference, we are offering our delegates the platform not only to engage

other AIESECers but our alumni, partners, externals and non AIESECers. In this section, you

will get to know the main events for Spark Conference.

ASEAN Economic Community Forum, November 2nd

As the entire region of South East Asia moves unto the AEC, it becomes necessary for the

youth to fully understand the origins, progress and effect of this initiative. Therefore we have

prepared a special event involving numerous guest speakers and externals to give lectures and

speeches on what they perceive to be the most important points of the AEC for the youth.

We have also prepared panel discussions and workshops for the forum, so that our delegates

may actively engage and critically analyze the ideas brought forward by the externals.

ASEAN Night, November 2nd

This event will celebrate the cultural and ethnic

diversity of the youth in South East Asia and

will also serve as a platform for our non South

East Asian delegates to present their own

unique culture as well.

Each delegation will have the opportunity to

make a traditional performance and will also

have a stand for them. The stand will be used

to showcase the delegation’s culture whether it

is through booklets, gifts or other unique ways.

Gala Dinner, November 4th

The gala dinner will be an event for our delegates to dress up and present the best in them. The

gala dinner will have numerous opportunities for our delegates to mix and mingle and will serve

as a welcome change to the overall conference evening atmosphere and a fine way to wrap up

most of the conference activities.

Post Tour, November 6th-8th

The first day of the conference post tour will have the

delegates visiting the historical and cultural centers of

Thailand located in the heart of Bangkok. These places

will include The Grand Palace and

The Temple of the Emerald Buddha, monuments to the

ingenious and innovative architectural style of Thailand,

and the temples of Wat Pho and Wat Arun, temples that

are renowned throughout Thailand for the historical,

cultural and religious significance. Our trip will then lead toward the trendy and stylish streets of

Siam, where you have numerous choices for shopping, eating, chilling or just walking around.

In the evening we will go to the infamous red light and party district of Patpong where you may

find yourself in a place that caters to every tastes and interests.

On November 7th (hopefully if the delegates are still energetic enough to move!), our trip will

move outside of Bangkok to the old city of Pattaya. The city is famous for its crystal clear ocean

and a white sandy beach. Here you may find a taste of the real culture and tradition of Thailand

and enjoy a relaxing evening with all the delegates while wrapping up your entire experience of

Thailand.

On November 8th, the trip will be finished after moving back to Bangkok from Pattaya.
