SPANISH TOWN

Spanish Town is the oldest continuously inhabited city in Jamaica

A site of historical importance shaped by two significant colonial periods: 1. The Spanish Period (1534 1655) 2. The English Period (1655 1872)

British mutinies, trials for female pirates, serial killers, a place for political debates and grand balls

Most notably was the Proclamation of Emancipation in 1838 on the steps of Kings House

The Spanish Town Historic District was so defined because of the group value of its buildings, monuments and sites

INTENT OF THE HERITAGE TRAIL

Development of a Historical Trail in Spanish Town seeks to highlight Spanish Towns exciting collection of historical treasures and the rich story of the old capital.

We seek to use it to build community interest and inclusion which will help to transform the area and offer economic opportunity

To use the potential of cultural heritage and the education thereof as a means of fostering national pride and identity.

The potential to share this pride and knowledge through cultural tourism and as one of the means of economic regeneration.

The potential to place emphasis on cultural vitality as one of the sustainable pillars for redevelopment of Spanish Town and its environs in keeping with its obvious link to Downtown Kingston & Port Royal.

And finally, the use of its potential success as a catalyst for the total regeneration of Spanish Town on the whole and a precedent for other such towns across the island.

THE CAST IRON BRIDGE

The Iron Bridge heralds

one of the major

accomplishments of

the Industrial Revolution

Iron production process and assembly

Erected in 1801 over

the Rio Cobre and

served as the main link

between Kingston and

Spanish Town for 130

years.

It was closed to

vehicular traffic in 1931

This bridge is the oldest

surviving cast iron

bridge in the western

hemisphere.

The Cathedral of St James

This is the oldest cathedral in the British Caribbean. It stands on the same site of the

Chapel of the Red Cross built by the Spanish in

1525 and destroyed during the British invasion. It

was named the Cathedral of the Jamaican

Diocese of the Anglican Church.

The Cathedral is a mixture of many different

architectural styles including medieval and

includes a number of monuments and

memorials of prominent British colonist dating

back to the 1700s.

2. The Old House of Assembly built in 1762,

now home to the St Catherine Parish

Council and the Mayor.

3. The Old Court House built in 1819- upper

floors were used for the Town Hall.

4. The Old Kings House, built in 1762 as the residence for the governor. In 1950s it was refurbished and the stables was converted

into the Islands Folks Museum, now known as the Jamaica Peoples Museum of Craft

and Technology.

Making good defects on the wrought iron works to fencing

Upgrade of landscape, lighting fixtures, fountain, and walkways

The Old Kings House has the potential to be one of the major destinations and intimate event venue within the Historic District. It will:

Include expansion& upgrade of the Peoples Museum which will be brought forward to Phase 1 which is expected to include more interactive exhibits, community involvement

A Devon House type courtyard concept with specialty shops of craft, pastry, ice-cream, gift shop on its periphery to the rear and eventually restaurant/bakery/cafe in a refurbished Kings House.

Landscaped open spaces suitable to host small scale event or outdoor performance.

The aim is the restoration of Kings House with roof once the appropriate tenant found or business plan developed

OLD COURT HOUSE PHASE 2

The Old Court House is to be reestablished as a Business Incubator in which small businesses/law offices can rent office space for their operation with conference rooms available for their use on the ground floor.

The open upper floor will lend itself to Town Hall Meetings and other such gatherings. Works would include:
