he world of books is becoming ever T more tantalizing to Spanish-speak- ing children (or those who wish to learn Spanish). From updated versions of timeless classics, to inviting "interac- tive" series originally published in France, to exquisite Spanish renditions of popular American or British favor- ites, the following books, recently pub- lished in Spanish, are reason for Spanish speakers everywhere to celebrate.

Fiction

Andersen, Hans Christian El patito feo. (The Ugly Duckling.) Adapted by Mere? Escardo i Bas. Illus. by Max. Translated by Marco Ramirez. ISBN

More titles in this engaging, easy-to-read series of some of the worlds best-loved stories. The readable narra- tives, accompanied by modernistic, full- page watercolor illustrations, are just right for reluctant readers. Ages 8-10.

Fine, Anne Cutremami. (Crummy Mummy and Me.) Illus. by Jesus Gaban. Translated by Javier Franco. Madrid: Ediciones Gaviota,

Originally published in Britain by the author of the popular book Mrs. Doubtfre, this amusing novel tells about a most responsible girl, Minna, who is about 12, and her most unreliable mother. Minna's mother spends her unemployment money on extravagant clothes, is always late, and doesn't be- lieve in "necessary" rules, including bed- time for her children. Minna's mother is always there, however, when needed. Narrated from a first-person point of view, this humorous novel will enter- tain and amuse readers with its hon- esty, candor and plea for tolerance and acceptance. Ages 10-13.

84-246-1 962-5.

1996. 143 p p . ISBN84-392-8790-9. $8.95.

Lionni, Leo Frederick. (Frederick.) Translated by

Ana Maria Matute. Barcelona: Editorial Lumen, 1997. 28 p p . lSBN 84-264-3529- 7 . $12.75. Lionni's version of the ant and grasshopper fable is now available in a Spanish rendition. Young Spanish speakers will delight in Frederick, a mouse-poet, who collects words and colors while the other mice bring in the harvest for the long winter. The collage illustrations, created from two shades of gray paper, are just as enticing as the originals; the Peninsular Spanish- inflected verbal forms are definitely un- derstandable in context. Ages 5-7.

Readers can view the world of insects, compare a 16th-century Mercator map of the Earth with a 20th-century map made from sat- ellite photographs, and learn important characteristics of mammals. Each title includes a glossary, chronology and in- dex. Ages 9-13.

Like the previous 43 titles in this appealing series, originally published by Editions Gallimard of Paris in 1995, these editions feature brief, simple texts and colorful illustrations on glossy pages intermingled between transparent plastic overlays. Readers will learn about the telephone and other means of communications; the sense of touch; the construction of large struc- tures, including ships, tunnels and high- ways; and the history and celebration of Christmas around the world. Ages 7-9.

Powell, Anton and Philip Steele El peri6dico de Grecia. (The Greek News.) Translated by Maite Subirats. Barcelona: Ediciones B, 1997. 32 pp . lSBN 84-406-6999-2. $15.95. Originally pub- lished by Walker Books of London, this large-format publication presents the history of ancient Greece in a daily news format. With large newspaper head- lines such as “Grecia en peligro” (“Greece in Danger”) and “Alejandro vence” (”Alexander Conquers”) as in- troductions to one-page chapters, this well-illustrated volume tells about the politics, wars, lifestyle, gods and other aspects of ancient Greece in an appeal- ing, contemporary tone. To further tan- talize readers, it includes classified ads, special notices, cartoons and maps. A chronology and an index are also in- cluded. Also in this series: El Peribdico de Roma (The Roman News). Ages 10-13.

Root, Betty Mi primer diccionario. (My First Dic- tionary.) Illus. byJonathan Langley. Trans- lated by And& Molina. Barcelona: Ediciones

This is a most appealing, large-format, first dictionary for young Spanish speak- ers (or those just learning Spanish). Origi- nally published by Dorling Kindersley of London in 1993, it includes 1,000 care- fully selected words from young children’s vocabularies, easy-to-under- stand definitions, and sharp color draw- ings and photographs to help clarify meaning. It also includes alphabet and

other word games. There are two minor caveats: It uses the peninsular Spanish var- iant fom, which is different from Hispan- ic America in a@ entries; and it lacks the definiteartidesthatareusedvery frequently in Spanish and that are always indicated in Spanish dictionaries. Ages 6-8.

Taylor, Barbara Las cremalleras tienen dientes y otras preguntas sobre inventos. (I Wonder Why Zippers Have Teeth and Other Questions About Inventions.) Illus. by Susanna Addario and others. Translated by Marisa Rodriguez Perez. (Me Pregunto Porqut) Madrid: Editorial Everest, 1997. 32 pp. ISBN 84-241-19614. $16.95. Numer- ous attractive colorful drawings and brief question-and-answer paragraphs help childrenanswer such questions as, “How were straws invented?” ”Who pulled the first [toilet] chain?” ’Why were the first Band-Aids invented?” This is indeed a most enjoyable view of the scientific re- search and technology that resulted in BarbieTM, CD-ROhh, cornflakes, FrisbeesTM, lipstick, microwave ovens and many other objects that make our lives easier or more fun. Unfortunately, some readers in His- panic America will object to a few of the words that are used chiefly in Spain (e.g., ordenador for computer, pajitas for straws,

imperdibles for safety pins), but it would be a shame if a few Spanish variant forms kept this amusing book out of the hands of inventors-to-be. Ages E12.
