The Soviets

• On August 21 1957 the Soviets made the first l ICMB(intercontinental ballistic missile).

• On October 4 1957 the Soviets First artificial satellite. The first signals from space.

• 3 November 1957 First animal in orbit, the dog Laika.

• The soviets have made the most progress to archiving humans in space while the USA is has not yet archived an ICBM.

The USA

• On May 10 1946 First space research flight (cosmic radiation experiments)

• On May 22 1946 First U.S.-designed rocket to reach edge of space(49 mi).

• On October 10 1946 First pictures of earth from 62 mi.

• 1947 First animals in space (fruit flies).

Compare

• By the time the USA had made a soft landing on the moon it had been five months behind the USSR.

• But by the time the USSR had their first automated docking the USA had their first manned docking over 19 months earlier.
