A designer and researcher has pioneered a newform of fabric which promises to revolutionise thetextiles industry.

Sonia Reynolds invented 'space cloth' – the firstnon-woven material made from yarn. It has astrong potential for use as a smart textile due to itsunique structure with space to encase copperwiring, light emitting diodes (LEDs) and more.

Ms Reynolds brought the idea to Nottingham TrentUniversity's Advanced Textile Research Group andis now undertaking a PhD in the subject to furtherdevelop the fabric's novel manufacturing processunder the direction of Professor Tilak Dias and DrAmanda Briggs-Goode, of the School of Art andDesign.

Scientifically named Zephlinear, unlike traditionalwoven or knitted materials which are made by theinterloping or interlacing of yarns, it is made by anewly established technique known as yarnsurface entanglement.

Ms Reynolds said: "This is a real breakthrough for

the textiles industry. It's the first non-woven materialmade from yarn and promises major benefits forthe future of clothing, and more.

"Because of the material's linear channels of yarn,it has great potential to be used as a smart textile.In particular, we believe it lends itself well to beingembedded with microcapsules containingmedication or scent, to either help deliver drugs tospecific parts of the body or to create antibacterialand aromatic clothing.

"As the material is visually different, it has potentialto be used for other applications as well, such aswall coverings, in addition to clothing.

"And because it's much less labour intensive tomake than knit or weave fabrics, it's a moreenvironmentally friendly material to produce aswell."

The name, Zephlinear, derives from the merger oftwo words, zephyr and linear. It was given thenickname 'space cloth' due to its appearance andits e-textile capabilities.

The material – which is patent pending – wasrecently presented at the Wearable TechnologyShow, USA, by Ms Reynolds.

Research shows that it is strongest and mostefficient when created from natural yarns such asone hundred per cent wool, hair and wool/silkmixtures, though it can also be made from syntheticyarns.

Professor Dias, who leads the university'sAdvanced Textiles Research Group, said:"Zephlinear is a remarkable development in anindustry which is advancing at an incredible pace.

"We believe it has huge potential for textiles, andwe have already found that it combines well with e-textile technologies such as heated textiles or

textiles with embedded LEDs.

"As a fabric it is very lightweight and flexible, and itretracts back to its original shape well after it hasbeen stretched.

"We're very much looking forward to developing thematerial further and feel certain that it will helpprovide people with smarter and moreenvironmentally friendly clothing in the future".
