At South Suburban College, students can enroll in courses intended for career education or forcollege credit. In order to thoroughly prepare students for the workplace, South SuburbanCollege is committed to offering traditional educational opportunities as well as courses thatrelate to emerging fields.

HistorySouth Suburban College is the latest incarnation of a school that has had several differentnames and locations. In the beginning, the school was founded in 1927 as Thornton JuniorCollege. Originally, the college was an extension of the Thornton Township High School,although it later expanded to serve graduates from several area high schools. In 1969, thecollege changed its name to Thornton Junior College in order to prepare itself to serve a widervariety of students. Shortly after receiving its new moniker, the college switched to a new maincampus in 1972. This campus was located in South Holland and is still the primary site for theschool. In 1988, the Board of Trustees chose to once again update the name of the college inorder to better reflect its current geographic location. Consequently, the college was renamedSouth Suburban College.

FactsSince South Suburban College serves a large, densely populated area, the school generallyenrolls around 17,000 students each year. The school offers open admission to any individualthat has a high school diploma or an equivalent. South Suburban College offers many differentprograms, including occupational classes, basic adult education, ESL training, and academiccourses. Non­credit classes are popular with local businesses because they can be customizedfor employee training. In addition, South Suburban College features a variety of special interestclasses each semester as well as distance learning opportunities. South Suburban College isfocused on preparing its students for success in the real world, so it provides a number ofjob­training programs as well as career advice and assistance.

Since South Suburban College is home to a state­of­the­art performing arts center, the schooloften hosts exciting cultural events, from plays and concerts to comedy acts and academiclectures.

LocationSouth Holland, Illinois is the home of South Suburban College. Located in the southern suburbsof Chicago, the school is able to serve the Chicago Southland area. In addition, the college runsa secondary campus in Oak Forest, Illinois.
