SOUTH DOWN NEWSLETTER Letter from the President

It looks like summer is finally here. Whilst it will be difficult this year with Covid-19

forcing the closure of some amenities in the community as well as the bigger im-

pacts in most of our lives (the lock down, illness and loss, changes to work, chang-

es to our children/grandchildren’s education, and things like eating in a restaurant

or going to a show); we hope that you and your families are doing well, and thank

you for your patience and understanding by following the guidance around social

distancing and the responsible use of the facilities. It appears that a new ‘normal’

will emerge and we will do our best to ensure that you, your families and guests can continue to visit and en-

joy all the wonderful things we are so fortunate to have, but in a safe and respectful manner.

I understand that for some, adhering to the new (and existing) rules and regulations is hard. But the rules are

intended to help all of us enjoy the facilities in a safe and comfortable way. For the majority of owners, this

is an easy adjustment, but with nearly 500 homes there will be times where some owner’s fun causes distress

and unhappiness for others. In these situations, we all need to be respectful as none of us are perfect, and

we may not like to be told that our actions are upsetting others. It is our intent to tell you directly when you

have done something that is a problem, in a respectful way, and that you indeed listen and respond with

equal respect and understanding. Our rules are clear and owners are responsible for their family members

and guests within our community.

I would like to share the most common concerns in our community and ask for your help.

Speeding –The speed limits in South Down are 15mph or 25mph. Our community is not

the place to be driving fast. We have many families with children or pets playing in their

yards, enjoying walking around the community and sharing the roads. Most of our own-

ers are fantastic, they slow down, they are considerate, but there are a few who either

forget they are here to relax and enjoy the slower pace, or they feel they need to show

they can ignore the speed limits. We need everyone to please SLOW DOWN.

Stop Signs – We have a few locations in South Down where there are stop signs

to prevent accidents and to keep pedestrian and golf carts safe. Some drivers not only fail to stop at the signs, but they do not even slow down. This is dangerous and unacceptable. Many residents in the community have complained about this and they are rightfully concerned about safety (and respect for the rules). Please slow down when ap-proaching the stop sign and come to a complete stop before proceeding.

We would prefer not to implement more controls (ex: additional speed calming); if the issues with speeding and ignoring the stop sign continue, we will be forced to take additional measures to ensure the safety of the community.

Picking Up After Your Pets – We live in a pet friendly community; it is great to

see so many people out walking their dogs, I enjoy walking Bailey multiple times a

day. Your neighbors like seeing your well behaved pets, many even saying ‘hello’

or having a treat for their favorite furry friends. However, our community does

have a leash rule, and a ‘pick up after your pet’ rule. No one wants to deal with

coming into contact with your pet’s waste. It should also be remembered that we

are not a community where people are picking up your little bags of poop; you

need to dispose of them properly yourself. Please insure that your dogs are

leashed while taking them for a walk and clean up any of their waste and dispose

of it properly.

Golf Carts – Yes, we are a golf cart community and our #1 complaint is children/

young adults driving golf carts in an inappropriate or reckless manner. We under-stand being in a gated community it feels like your children can drive around and have fun in the golf cart. However, we need to ensure that everyone is safe and that the golf carts are driven responsibly by (or with) a licensed operator. We also receive complaints of golf carts that are overloaded with passengers or

have passengers hanging onto or out of the golf cart. There have been cases of drivers operating a golf cart in an impaired fashion (alcohol or other impairing substances). Golf cart issues are the problem that security deals with the most during the summer. If the security person-nel indicates that there is a problem with your golf cart, driver or operation, please understand that this is with your safety and that of others in mind. Note that Long Bay now requires all Golf Carts have insurance, we can do the same if, as a community, we cannot operate golf carts in a safe and respectful manner. Please always maintain control of your golf cart, only allow children to drive when accompanied by a licensed adult, respect the rules of the road and never drive impaired.

Respect - We understand you have worked hard, you are successful, and you

are here to enjoy yourself. However, how you treat the other members of the community, the volunteers keeping the community running, the security person-nel maintaining safety, the facilities staff, the management company and the mari-na staff is the measure of you as a person. We are all lucky to live in this commu-nity and it takes the daily contribution of many individuals to keep everything well maintained, safe, and fiscally sound. We understand that it is not easy for us all to agree or approve of each other’s actions all the time but if we can respect each other, it will make getting along and focusing on enjoying our community so much

easier. Please be respectful at all times. Enjoy the community, enjoy the summer, stay safe, keep socially distanced and thank you for your sup-port.

SOUTH DOWN GARDEN CLUB South Down Home & Garden Club Maintains Communication With Virtual Events The South Down Home & Garden Club has been coping with the many changes to our lives ever since Covid-19 entered them. Just like every other club and organization, we’ve been forced to cease meetings and functions, but that has not stopped the group from reaching out and trying to remain in virtual contact with members! Since April, when we normally would have started our monthly meetings, here are the projects we’ve used to reach out and let members know we are still around and eager to meet again soon. Thinking of You Survey Early on, our April project was a simple survey that was sent out to members. We wondered some silly things, like how many rolls of toilet paper have you stockpiled, and, what do you miss most: haircut, hair color or manicure? And also asked more poignant ones, like, how many books have you read and what do you miss the most? An-swers were tallied and results shared with members, giving us two opportunities to make contact, once to ask the questions and a second time to give the results.

In case you’re curious, haircuts were the most missed service among our members. The largest quantity of toilet paper rolls was 75, and the greatest number of books read since March 15 was 59. And in answer to what do you miss the most? Grandchildren, hands down! That answer was fol-lowed by family in general, and then eating out. Overall, members admitted to thinking about and becoming more aware of those and that which we take for granted.

Take In - Take Out Garden Exchange

In lieu of meeting in May the club held a properly social distanced gathering of sorts. The club sponsored a pop-up gardening exchange on the lawn near the newspapers on Recrea-tion Drive. Members and friends were invited to bring any garden related items, including plants, that they were looking to give away. Drop off was the morning of the event, and then in the early afternoon, members, friends and neighbors were invited to come back and help themselves to anything they wanted. Any items not taken were donated to the Salvation Army.

Partly because of its public location, the event gave us the opportunity to meet new folks who were intrigued by the chance to pick up some gardening pots, lawn displays, tools, plants, flags, and more. One particularly pleased customer was a teacher, low on funds, who was delighted at the opportunity to stock up with supplies for a chil-dren’s garden she recently put together. The event was considered successful by all counts, and is one that we just might consider re-visiting next year.

Reaching Out – Spreading Smiles By June, it had become apparent that our next live meeting would be many months away.

We decided to encourage members to reach out to their neighbors with a simple gift (a

small plant, baked goods, a “re-gift” of something unique) and a note that would let neigh-

bors know they were being thought of during this most challenging of times. An initiative

of the South Down Home & Garden Club, recipients were encouraged to visit the South

Down website in order to learn more about the club, and were urged to pay it forward, by

copying the note and showing an expression of kindness to a neighbor of their choosing.

LONG BAY NEWSLETTER Letter from the President

We are well into the new normal of Covid-19 and I’m sure were are all getting tired of the constant negative news and now the concerning impact of opening up our ameni-ties. Each of our Governors where we have residences are struggling with the tough de-cisions of whether to open amenities and ease restrictions, with the knowledge that there will be an impact of lives lost by these decisions. In Long Bay, we have had no less than a struggle with this decision. We have had contin-

uing requests, and in some cases a little more than requests to open our amenities fully. Where the Gover-nors restrictions and legal counsel have allowed us to do this we have . Beaches, Tennis Courts, Kayak Racks, and Bocce Ball Courts have been opened. We are now working toward the opening of the Pool and likely the Restrooms. Each of these will require new staffing and costs for Long Bay that will impact dues for the next few years. This staffing will be re-quired to manage the number of people in the pool area, giving an opportunity for all to use, and to pro-vide cleaning and disinfecting at required intervals. Long Bay is resilient, and we will get through this, but it is taking many more hours of Board time to deal with this new threat to our way of living and socializing. We will be discussing this in more detail at our An-nual Meeting. As always, we invite more of our owners to join our Board and various Committees. This especially true this year as we have had and will have key Board and Committee positions replaced from those retiring from their positions after many years of dedication to make Long Bay a great place to live and enjoy all that the Lakes Region has to offer.

Most Sincerely, Dick Bordwell President, LBHOA II

Editor’s Note: Dick Bordwell will not be running for re-election as President of Long Bay at the Annual Meeting. Personally, it has been a pleasure working with Dick; he has been instrumental in the community improvements, the Preserva-tion initiative, and the governance of the community.

LONG BAY IMPORTANT UPDATES

Boat Club -The weather has been beautiful and the boating season got off to an early start. Its great to see

the docks full of boats and everyone getting back to some degree of normal with their family and friends on our beautiful lake. One of the big improvements we have made is the lighting. The new LED lights have made it easier to dock at night and has kept our boating area safer overall. I look forward to seeing all the Long Bay Boat Club members and Day Dock Visitors throughout the summer. Jonathan Young, Long Bay Boat Club President

LONG BAY IMPORTANT UPDATES

Annual Meeting – Due to Covid, we have cancelled our Town Hall Meeting which we normally hold in late June. At the same time, we have moved up the Annual Meeting to Saturday August 1st, and will be held again at the Beane Center. They are operating at a 50% capacity quota which allows for 135 members. Long Bay has rarely attained actu-al attendance of more than 90 at our meetings. Instead, we rely heavily on everyone getting their proxies in to enable us to hit our quorum and approve budgets. This year we need your support on attendance and proxies more than ever. The Beane Center will be setting up the meeting for auditorium style seating and this will accommodate the social distancing we need to maintain during check in and the meeting. This year we will require masks at the meeting and we will also be using a thermal thermometer to ensure that no one is running a fever at time of the meeting.

Social Committee – At this time we have a restricted Social Agenda since we just don’t have the space to congre-gate and maintain social distancing. This has impacted the 4th of July fireworks and Annual Golf Cart parade.

Fireworks – This event has been moved to Saturday August 22nd. Annual Golf Cart Parade—Saturday, July 4th 10:00 am (no pool social following this year)

Judy Smith, Judy Taylor, Long Bay Social Committee

Safety & Security Committee – Long Bay and South Down have 2 new security guards that will be working on a rotation in both communities. They will be working 6 days/week from 6pm - 2am. If there are incidences that occur during their shift, you can contact these officers. We have three key areas that Security is having to deal with when they are on our grounds:

Golf Carts – we continue to have underage children driving carts without an adult in the cart with them. Warnings will be issued, and continued infractions will lead to fines.

Late Night Beach Use – With the young adult increases this year with summer camps closed and summer jobs restricted, we are seeing an influx of partying on our beaches starting at 1:00 to 2:00am when our pa-trols are going off duty. Our owners are having to pick up trash nearly every morning. If you have young adults in your household , We ask you to PLEASE have them treat our amenities with respect.

Pool Break-in – Someone broke into the pool in the early hours of mid -June. They left food trash, fouled a restroom, and caused some damage to pool tiles that will need repair at the end of the season.

Arnie Pierce, Security Chairman

Moorings – So far, we have passed the 1st two steps with the NHDOT in gaining approval for our new mooring field. This new mooring field will hold 20 moorings and will entail leasing 550’ of waterfront from the State. The final step is for the Governor’s Council to approve and have the Governor sign. We are expecting that this could happen in Au-gust, and allow us to place the mooring blocks this fall and be prepared for the Spring of 2021 Boating Season. If you are on the mooring list you need to put in a $250 Deposit this July and again in the Spring of 2021, to defray the additional upfront costs of completing this new mooring field. This will be managed through Evergreen Management and you should contact Robin Kingston or Linda Hersey to get your 1st deposit in. The waiting list has more than 20 boat owners on it, so we will start with the first 20, and if there are vacancies from those not paying their deposit, we will then begin going down further on the list until we have all 20 deposits collected. Scott Palmer, Mooring Chairman
